Mateta

JPM wanting to leave this window all seemed a bit odd given his motivation is the WC. He’s a guaranteed starter for us.

Moving forward, he’ll mentally be in a bad place, so now seems the time to go under the knife. Give SL a run in the team, he’ll be hungry.

If JPM is only out for 6 weeks (as Munoz was), he’s got plenty of game time to impress before the WC. If we win the Conference League, a season in The Europa may change his mindset.

I feel it’s worked out well for us from squad perspective. Not sure about the financials.

Best thing he can do is get his head down, work hard and score goals. That will get the fans back on side.

I don't believe Milan didn't know about his injury. Were they trying to do a Palace and get the fee dropped? My guess is yes, and Palace called their bluff.
Or Palace knew all about the likelihood of him failing a medical with Milan or anyone else and that he would still be our player post the window shutting. So the benefit to Mateta of wanting away has gone and now he has 2 competitors for his position plus not being flavour of the month with the fans. It will be interesting to see how he is received!

Watching Sky last night, the after deadline show, and that clown Boyd said he had doubts whether SL would score more than Larsen because strikers need a team that creates chances and that is Palace’s real problem. No one pulled him up on it and pointed out Palace and Mateta in particular have one of the highest xGs for goals and the lowest conversion rate. Much of that is down to Mateta’s poor form.
yes saw this and screamed at the telly that Boyd is totally clueless

Now he is staying, I suppose he will be pushing for a pay rise.
Is it true he is currently on £4.5m/year. (£90k/wk).
He earns 40k less than Nketiah.

That's what happens when you sign rejects from bigger clubs.

Did Glasner publicly come out in a conference a couple weeks ago saying JPM lost the knobby knee comp at butlins ?

Hence highlighting a possible knee problem to all potential buyers !

JPM & SP needs a conversation with OG on this one as it was he who scuppered any deal !

OG is a bit of an idiot and his outspoken dummy spits at press has caused many many issues at Palace
Nonsense. JPM’s knee issue has been known for months, but don’t let that stop you having a dig at Glasner.

Sorry, but megalolz. 😂

Palace have been speaking to Sky, and Milan, were told from the outset Mateta had an injury issue. The question should be why Milan left their medical until the last day.

Sounds like Mateta was hung out to dry by Milan and this had a knock on to the McNeil deal.

Maybe Milan were trying to give their fans the impression that they were trying for a new striker, without the commitment (or expenditure) in the knowledge that the medical results likely wouldn't be acceptable.

It’s a Machiavellian observation but making a high offer and pulling out at the last minute due to a medical condition (which was already widely known) has meant that Juventus (AC Milan rival for Champions league place in Serie A) couldn’t sign him.

I'm not joining the pile on against Mateta.

The guy wanted to leave last Summer and has been playing with an injury.

I expect he will have surgery now, but if he is playing in a Palace shirt, then it makes no sense to barrack him. If he scores goals, then everybody should be happy.

I hope he can get fit and finish the season with a flourish. Then we can wave him off with no hard feelings. He is an FA Cup winner.

Fair play and fair points.

I don't really get it either. It's not like he demanded a move, downed tools, kicked up a fuss or even handed in a transfer request. He's 28, probably has one more move in his career to a club that's competing at the top level of football. I don't begrudge him at all wanting to see if he can make that step up and fulfil a career ambition. Yeah it went tits up, but moving to Milan would be a dream move for most European footballers.

I expect the reception from the rest of the squad will be a mixture of taking the p1ss out of him and a bit of sympathy it didn't happen, and everyone will just crack on.

I think he will leave on loan to a Turkish team so he can try and play and get in the French squad.
