Marc Guehi

Surely Marc Guehi can do a lot better than Newcastle or Spurs. He is 24 or 25 this year (I think). His next move will most likely be his last to a big club.

I'm sure if arsenal, Liverpool or city come in then his eyebrows will raise.

Whilst I understand us turning down the reported fee from Spurs, I also do think Guehi will go in the Summer especially if we get him signed to a contract soon. Obviously do not want him too but just think he will.

As some have said though, if we had way better CB depth, we more than likely would have accepted their offer.

if the deal is really for £70m and not say £40m with loads of unrealistic add ons it's a very good offer.

However, we cannot let MG go now as we need cover at CB and CM.

Whilst Lerma is limited he is an integral part of the squad. We can't just rely on Hughes and Wharton in CM as the first struggles with 90 minutes and gets loads of cards and the latter is just coming back from a long injury layoff. Kamada is not an option IMHO.

At CB we are 2 down so the current back 3 picks itself.

It just goes to show what a disastrous buy Holding was. He should be a decent replacement but has barely kicked a ball in 18 months. Before someone says he only cost £1m upfront (i've heard between £1m and £4) he is supposedly on £58k a week so that's over £4m in wages over the last 18 months.

If Guehi doesn't sign a new contract with us by say June, he will have to be shipped out and I reckon we will only get £75m as he will only have one year left.
Two years and it would have been nearer £90m.
Or get him to sign a new two year contract on big money (say £125k/wk) with a £75m release clause triggered any time after the end of this year, with 3 months notice.

where do Sky get their supposed football 'experts' from - clueless.

4 of them discussing the MG bid, and one says he's a great player but it's a lot of money. Is he a primary defender in a back 4. Another pipes up that he's good in a back 3 but we are yet to see him excel in a back 4!!!

Well he and Andersen were probably the best CB pairing outside the top 4 for 2.5 years and he has excelled for England in a back 4.

Yes, he is slightly small for a CB but to assume he can't play in a flat back 4 is ridiculous.

When you remember the prime aim of the pundits is to generate interest and ‘talking points’ rather than give insight then it makes more sense. Sky Sports News used to be an actual journalist led, sports news channel. They’ve cut back on it so a lot of good journalists have left and it’s more of an ‘entertainment’ channel.

Now who was the English player of the tournament in the last Euros? Someone who played in the back 4 if I remember correctly. Hmmm...

We’re not getting relegated. At the end of last season when Guehi was out injured and Glasner had settled in, we had our best run of Premier League results for years.

Our back 3 then, when we were playing so well was Andersen, Richards and Clyne. We have simply replaced Andersen with Lacroix.

If it really were a £70M bid as is being reported, I’d take the money and spend it in the summer.

I see the logic. It would be a good financial decision, but we don't know the details.

One ITK said it was £55m upfront which is outrageously good. I somehow doubt it.

Also, there's no guarantee MG would want Spurs over say Chelsea. He'd be on less money for a start, and Spurs have been a disaster at times. Chelsea have too, but not this season.

We are staying up, but I'd only sell if the terms were extremely favourable. Not £5m for 10 years

We should sign Lacroix with the money! Lol.

Murillo would cost more than £70m especially as just signed a new contract.

I’m not saying we should sign Murillo now, I’m pointing out he cost Forest only £10M to buy eighteen months ago. Lacroix cost us only £15M less than a year ago and the other Centre Backs mentioned were all similar money. I’d suggest Huijsen is actually a better player than MG and is 5 years younger, he cost Bournemouth £13M and now Real Madrid are after him!

There are numerous options to replace Guehi and as previously evidenced, at a fraction of £70M.

Indeed we ourselves signed Marc for only £23M in the first place.

I think this all turns on whether you think we can manage without him for the rest of the season and then whether you think we can find a great value centre half. To me it is dubious that we could manage without him especially given the lack of depth in the squad with injuries.

It’s equally dubious we will find a replacement of anything like similar quality. Different positions but we had plenty of time to prepare for the likelihood of Olise going and have not managed to replace him with anything like the same quality.

The part of the league we're in is very tight right now. Slip 5 places and we lose £10-15m in prize money.

Lerma and Munoz are about to start flying to Colombia every 5 minutes again, Lerma often picks up an injury around that time. Ward has injury issues, Wharton is barely back, lots of question marks over Kamada...

You're right on the lack of depth. We are an injury or two away from an expensive slide down the league. I'm not convinced Guehi's value would drop by more than those 5 places between now and the summer.

Agree. As much as I love MG, he's not going to be as hard to replace as some.

As someone else mentioned we'd ideally make those signings before selling to keep the prices reasonable
