Marc Guéhi

Apparently Olise got a £10m signing on fee at Bayern.
Like you say, I would expect Guehi to negotiate at least that.
It used to be that 10% of any transfer paid e.g. if Palace bought a player for £1m then you knew that a £100k of that went to the player.

I suspect it’s all changed now what with all the greed, of players and agents, and the ludicrous amounts of money involved.

Surely we have had time to scout a replacement for Marc.....? 🤭
Yes - his name is Jaydee Canvot. 😉

On a more serious note, City are desperate given the injuries to 2 of their CBs last weekend. If Guehi does want to go to them, then I suspect a deal will be done. £30m would be great but I suspect we'll do well to get £20m plus (say) 5m add-ons.
I imagine that Parish & Co have potential replacements lined up and may well be activating their first choice now.

All this talk about the huge signing on fee and wages Marc will earn is, in my opinion, twaddle. Every team has limits with goal scorers being the best paid. The backs are down the pecking order when it comes to money. Clubs will not want their players to feel hard done by a newcomer. Yes he will get a nice welcome payment of £1m or so and a substantial weekly wage in the region of £150-200k plus bonuses. He will also get big endorsement from companies associated with his employer. By our standards its massive but until he has proved himself over time the he will not yet be among the best paid centre backs in the world.

Guehi has his limitations. At only 6.0ft he is not a towering dominant header of the ball and his distribution out of defence is limited. We see this demonstrated weekly by his reluctance to play balls to forward to advanced players preferring to put short passes to Lacroix or Mitchell and occasionally Wharton/Hughes/Lerma who come right back to receive it. His attraction to other teams is his speed, tackling, reading of the game and calmness under pressure. He is very much in the Vincent Kompany mould and therefore of particular interest to Manchester City.

We took on Marc when others didn’t want him, gave him an opportunity to improve his defensive skills under Roy’s experienced eye and game time to hone them. He has received a good wage (£2.5m pa) and been offered a substantial increase, not to stop his ambition of moving to a top club but to help us get a replacement. Was that too much to ask? I wish him well but also that he might have had the good grace to do as Olise and Eze had and thank former clubs for the help they gave.

Distribution is limited. What game are you watching? Doesn't play Andertson esk 60 yard balls, but his distribution is one of the best parts of his game.

'Took a chance when nobody wanted him'....what on earth are you talking about.

There is a difference between a “world class” scorer/creator and an international centre back. The former are rare but for the right money good centre backs are far more common. Many on here thought Andersen was irreplaceable when he left for more money. Lacroix proved them wrong.
You cannot compare Olise to Guehi. Olise knew Palace would make a profit which would be shared with Reading. Eze also knew that QPR would receive an agreed share from his sale to the “Arse”. I doubt whether either thought about the size of their signing on fee or wages other than they would be better than Palace could pay. They both ensured that Palace would be looked after.

Ho ho ho

Why would Mark go anywhere now? Im sure he will be looking for a signing on fee of at least £15m, (which as a free agent would be at least double that in the summer).
So if Palace want £30m, the deal will cost a club £45m. Really? Why not just wait to the summer?

It isn’t always about the money, it is for some but certainly not all. For some it is about the club, the manager, the set up, the location.

It may be that Marc would rather play for an English club than moving abroad. It may be that he would much rather play for Man City than any other club. It may be that there are certain clubs he would never sign for.

It is rumoured that Wharton has his heart set on signing for Man City as his next move. To use that as an example then it is clear to see that he would jump at an opportunity to sign for them, even if the wages and signing on fee are less than being offered elsewhere and even if he would be a free agent in 6 months time.

The club have opened the door to a sale, but there has been little news of another centre-back coming in. If Marc does go, I wonder who the club has lined up to replace him? I read that Ake has to have his minutes managed, so that seems a no-go. Most PL clubs seem to be struggling for defensive cover, so it would likely mean going outside the PL, which is always a risk. The other option is we sign another defensive midfielder and use Lerma as a central defender.

If Marc still had a few years on his contract, how much would he be worth?
For me I would expect a fee much higher than ManU paid for Maguire (£80m 2019) He has grown into one of the very best centre backs in world football and we should be grateful for the years that he has turned out for the red n blue.
As someone posted earlier, if Madrid was happy to pay £10m for Trent for a few weeks work I do not think we should let Marc go for less than £35m. That represents good value pro-rata and if we do not get offers near that mark then we should enjoy his service until the end of the season.
How much extra money could we earn by finishing a few places higher up in the league, and also potentially winning the Conference league? If this is close to £10-15m then even more reason to hold out for £35m+

Dont forget, Chelsea have an option to match the best bid. Who knows what they may suddenly spring.
But Marc obviously gets the final say. If he says no, its a no. I've heard it said he never wants to return to Chelsea. I believe he not only feels the club never gave himself a fair chance but he has not been impressed with the treatment of friends he has there (Trev being one of them)

Firstly Canvot plays on the right so can’t be a replacement for MG. Secondly if he was thinking of moving this window or any club wanted him this window you would expect him to be ‘rested’ tomorrow so as not to be cup tied. OG says he is starting tomorrow.

I thought about him being cup tied, but I believe they changed the rule so a player can play for two teams in the competition!
If he’s going, no point in resting him. Flog that dead horse🤣

He plays on the right for us because Guehi plays on the left. He has played as the left-sided CB in the past although he is right-footed.

The wording :

"A Player shall only play for one Club in the Competition during the same Season, save that a Player that has played for one Club in the Qualifying Competition and/or the Competition Proper may play for a maximum of one other Club in the Competition Proper (but may only play for a maximum of one Club in any given round of the Competition)."

I assume I've got this wrong but if not being Cup tied doesn't seem like much of an issue if it only applies to games in the same round?
