Manchester United vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Maguire = cheat. Pretended he had been kicked in the face when ref gave foul against SL for a dangerous high kick, which went nowhere near Maguire's face. Plus it was more of a foul against SL than by SL in the first place.
Bet Lily Munster gave him a coating when he got back to Mockingbird Lane.

Also Maguire obstructed Guessand, elbowing him in the stomach in the process, to which the commentator said Guessand was making a meal of it (clearly a heavy blow), but when earlier he'd seen Maguire fake being kicked in the head I don't think he said anything. I don't think it's worth analysing Sky's commentary team though, as that was clearly biased to a laughable extent.

Yes that foul on Guessand really angered me. The talentless lump aka Maguire wasn't even looking at the ball. Put his head down and shoulder barged straight into Guessand. Definite yellow card.
The Strand-Larson high kick should have been a foul. Its illegal to raise your boot to head height. But Maguire lied about being caught in the face. Correct decision should have been a free kick to United and a yellow card for Maguire for simulation.
As for the game changing moment, its debatable whether in an era of players constantly pushing, shoving and shirt pulling a hand on the shoulder is actually a foul but if it is it is a free kick outside the box. Its not a penalty because it occurred outside the box and its not a red card because Max did not dfeny an obvious goalscoring opportunity. If you watch the video you can clearly see that if Cunha had stayed on his feet he was unlikely to get to the ball before Hendo so no obvious goalscoring opportunity. This is why he opted to dive in the first place.

The law must be more nuanced than that. If not, it would mean every overhead kick, from Pele's one armed classic in Escape to Victory, via Rooney's 2011 Manchester derby effort and Andy Carroll's against us to Garnacho's recently would all have been fouls under the current law?

If you are marking Paul Dickov one week and Peter Crouch the next presumably it is relative to the opponent as well? So there must be an element of control, danger, and opponent for it to be illegal. It's an interesting point and I do not know what the actual law is.

Clearly Cunha was held back outside the box and the referee and VAR seeing that Lacroix had a hand on the attackers shoulder when he tumbled inside the area deemed that a penalty should be awarded. Given this decision was made, it is understandable that a 'Red' was issued.
People of course have different viewpoints.

Aside the fact that IFAB guidance says otherwise you have it bang on

VAR / Ref would have given a free kick to us outside the box if it had been at the other end. Plus a yellow card as it wasn’t denying a goal scoring opportunity. I would also say that the dive alone which was worthy of a gold medal should have been a yellow card - Grrr! Yes, I’m Palace and biased but in this instance I would say the same for any team in that situation today. The big teams win again :-(

No, Sarr would've got a yellow for diving

Went to the game, went ballistic in the ground, then again seeing it back on motd, then again listening to the pundits telling me spineless weakling Kavanagh got it right. When Cunha dives the hand is well off the shoulder, simulation all day long. But all through the first half Kavanagh was giving them all the decisions, just look at the Fernandez “foul” just before half time, it really is unbelievable. Then as for a goal scoring opportunity: would have been at a near impossible angle once he would have been controlling the ball. And while I despise players diving and the game is in dire need to have that sorted out, it is the standard of officiating that invites them to dive. It gets rewarded. Yes we may have biased views but this is maddening.

If you raise your foot above head height its a foul. As with shirt pulling or pushing an opponent the ref tends to let it go if its in no way harming or threatening to harm someone. In this case there was a threat because Maguire was close enough to have been kicked in the face (and obviously pretended he had been)

Then how does anyone score with an overhead kick?

A high boot in UEFA/IFAB football is classified under Law 12 as "
playing in a dangerous manner," occurring when a player raises their foot near an opponent’s head or body, risking injury. It results in an indirect free kick (no contact) or a direct free kick/penalty (if contact is made).

AI on google spits this out and would believe that. High in itself is not a foul it has to endanger an opponent.

This, thank you for explaining better than I could

Palace should request that Kavanaugh not ref any more of their games, at a minimum. Also included should be the douche that disallowed Eze's goal opening game last year at Brentford (and effed CP in some other game).

Also just completely dismissed was at MU early minutes. i think Mitchell was in the box on the left-- he attempted a low cross but a MU defender slid in front and the ball bounced off his arm. Announcers just dismissed it as not intentional cuz of his slide, but wtf, seems other "unintentional" s*** is called all the time.
