Main Stand redevelopment thread

It wasn't too long ago we were trying to steal Sunderlands song. Our club has a great and unique history, founded by workers from the world's biggest glass structure, one of the great tourist attractions of Victorian London, its not even represented on either kit this season.

The Glaziers makes perfect sense, what's an eagle even got to do with the club or surrounding area, you only get them in Scotland don't you. A phoenix would have made more sense, we could have even had a cute little parakeet.

It would have been easy to incorporate the centenary wall into the new main stand, instead we will probably have SE25 spray painted across it.

It's a bit late to be complaining. It was 50 years ago.

My old dad couldn't believe it when the nickname Glaziers was lost to a red and blue eagle because his family had a number of direct working links to the Crystal Palace.

However, time moves on and at least there is a lot of glass in the proposed new structure whose design bears more than a passing nod to the original old building.

Selhurst Park used to be a brick foundry. Perhaps 'The Brickies' would have been more appropriate, or maybe 'The Inaccurate Dinosaurs'.

Well the claret and blue was donated by Aston villa , most clubs have got there colours from other clubs , Glaziers is about the only original part of our history , for obvious reasons ,

Very true. Same reason West Ham play today in claret & blue is the loan/donation of shirts from Villa. Reason Real Madrid play in all white (and are known in Spain as the lily whites) believe it or not is they copied Preston North End. As did Spurs

Returning to the stand... The whole issue of retaining some sense of the past when redeveloping is pretty varied. When Sunderland moved from Roker Park to the stadium of light, they took the turnstiles with them to keep some sort of connection with their history. It's still just a generic early 2000s stadium, though, albeit bigger than Southampton, Derby, Leicester etc.

Arsenal kept the clock from the clock end when moving to the Emirates, and Spurs made a big deal about moving that cockerel thing. Ultimately though, neither stadium has any sense of club history. The Emirates looks like loads of other modern European stadiums and the spurs ground looks like loads of American ones.

Villa redeveloped the Holte End years ago, and their American owner endeared himself to fans by restoring the exceptional brick detailing and pub. Villa park has been rebuilt stand by stand but retains a real sense of place, as we say in the world of planning.

Craven Cottage has such character and historical interest that Fulham are constrained by it. I believe one of the stands is a listed building. Good luck fixing a jumbotron to the wall of that.

Even though it was designed by Archibald Leitch, the most famous stadium designer of his day, I doubt many people think the existing main stand at selhurst is worthy of preservation, or that it has any elements we should transplant into the new stand for nostalgic reasons. Even the nod to the original crystal palace building seems like a pastiche to me.

Surely though somewhere could be found for these bricks?! Will stand contain a palace museum? Stick them in there if so.

Well done summary, I appreciate the insight.

There is a museum going into the new stand and I'm sure it will be full of Palace history and will likely look fantastic. I'd prefer they tie it in someway into the stand itself but I'm sure it will be world class whatever is done with it.

Because of the history of some of the other PL stadiums, Selhurst is just kind of there when it comes to historical importance. I also think the ownership group is in the tough spot of trying to remain respectful to the past while upgrading the amenities so that the club can compete in revenue, a contest we are always going to be behind the big kids for.

I personally think that the fans are what make Selhust special. I'd like to see the future upgrades visit stadiums like Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex in Turkey or Signal Iduna Park in Germany to get ideas on how to make the stadium even louder. If the fans are the show, then let the fans be obnoxiously loud to visitors while we scream in excitement about finishing 12th again.

Yeah that's an important part of the clubs history, not just copying Barcelona because they're good. Im sure we will keep the gates another poor attempt at trying to copy Liverpool.

So much moaning... Who cares if we changed our nickname? The Glaziers sounds dated and red & blue are far better and unique (in this country) than claret and blue.

Lads, we're finally getting a new stand, things are happening, every time I go down to the ground (which is at least once a week) something new has happened. I'm on the waiting list for the new stand, exciting stuff!

Sainsbury's own the freehold of the site, they occupy. They have no reason to sell or move, they aren't interested in football.
Worrying about WHL stand is pointless, I would be more concerned that the main stand will be completed. If we get relegated next season, I envisage a pull back on the main stand, due to revenue drop.

No pull back on main stand regardless. Palace will plough on as we have to remain competitive where ever league we're in. It taken close of a decade to get to this stage. The one aspect that won't change is the cost of this construction it will be expensive 🫰 to even consider a pull back, it doesn't make sense in every regard.
