Liverpool vs Crystal Palace match thread

Amongst the last 7 games we faced Arsenal, Villa, Spurs, Man City and Liverpool and remain unbeaten.
That's quite an achievement, even if some may argue that some of those clubs were on the beach.
The same argument was employed during our excellent run at the end of last season.

The facts are that Glasner has us organised, defensively sound, and effective in transition.
He's earned the right to demand still more and insist players maintain a team ethic.

The next challenge will be to find a way to beat teams that sit deep as we found to our cost v the likes of Brentford and Everton.
An effective plan B so to speak .

Very good point. I've been saying for months now we hurt teams that want to come at us and seem to struggle against low block teams (which is why I said all along I preferred to ply City over Forest in the cup final-an opinion that some thought me nuts to have).
If we can solve that issue and find the key that unlocks the counter attacking teams the sky is really the limit

In my opinion Esse did not follow instructions - and OG has made his point clearly. Which is the right thing to do - boy clearly has talent - but playing in the big league now - and still at lot to prove..!! IMO OG quite right to send the message do as I say - hopefully Esse takes it on board..!! COYP..!!

Mostly agree, but my feeling was and is that there were one or two lazy performances going on throughout the game well before Esse, got on the pitch, That’s more worrying because it must not lead to friction between OG and what we all see as our better players. these I think were the ego,s that OG complained of preventing us winning the game. After this great season few fans would have moaned, but OG is always totally committed so will question his players ,star players or otherwise.
If Esse,s ego is a problem maybe this will temper it, he will learn or he will fail

JPM and Eze were substituted too yesterday, and were guilty on occasions of not playing the ball to better positioned teammates.

Only a few weeks ago v Man City JPM was subbed at half time for not contributing as Glasner would want.

It's not restricted to young players like Esse.

I suppose it looks embarrassing as Esse was a sub yesterday and when a sub is subbed it raises eyebrows.

TBF, Coordes was always to say the least eccentric. His odd methods didn't result in achievements and his stint with Austria Vienna was rather short.

Only Arsenal and pool were playing for nothing so we played teams who needed something. I think 8 points from our last 8 games was seen an acceptable return on one thread. Willo what we get pal ?

At this afternoon’s presentations OG was asked ‘what is this group like to work with’? He said with a wry smile ‘today is a good moment to ask me this, after yesterday’s game, maybe not.’ Then he went on to lavish praise on them collectively. I think the general message that comes across is ‘it’s my way or the highway.’ As long as Esse learns from the experience and doesn’t take the hump he will be a better player for it. And, let’s face it, he already has an FA Cup winners medal that he wouldn’t have got if he’d stayed at Millwall.

Brian Clough did that to David Currie in a game. Told him later he did it just to piss the opposition off.
But worse, he could have used a sub and it was ten minutes before half time.

No idea what the actual reason for Esse, being pulled in the way he was, he seemed busy but OG knows what he wanted from him, and that’s that, I can’t help feeling the kid got on the wrong side of an already frustrated manager, because the game could have been won well before Esse, got on the pitch, OG,s mood already formed.

Did you not see him trying to showboat and gave the ball away for them to score and cost us two million quid. That's why he was deservably substituted

i think the criticism of Esse is a bit OTT. Yes he did lose the ball but right down near the corner flag, there was a lot of play before they scored from it - an unconvincing header from Mitch and Devenney massively ball watching to allow Salah to walk past him to score.

I've seen Zaha do similar many times over the years and never be criticised by manager or supporters.

We had a lot of potential 3 on 2s etc in the last 20 minutes and players like Sarr and Eddie made bad passes or decisions. JP had a couple of offsides in the 1st half that he should have avoided if he was more switched on etc.

Is Esse being over managed? When he broke away on the left earlier he played a very early ball into the box rather than taking a touch which seemed the obvious thing to do - was this the managers words in his ear (don't muck about play it early etc).

I don't think it's necessarily an ego thing, maybe he is just struggling to adjust to OG's ways. There is a good player in there

I very much doubt that Esse was substituted purely because he lost the ball in close proximity to the corner flag.

It might have been , but I don’t know that ,only OG knows why he hooked him.
Not you Willo, but odd that anyone should think. I would know.

All water under the bridge now, although watching the game on the telly here in Canada, I was really frustrated on the way we performed as a team after they went down to ten. Lack of leadership on the pitch perhaps with both Guehi and Wharton unavailable. Mitchell and Kamada were very effective and a good sign for next season. Really delighted that Munoz and JP got their recognition yesterday. Eddie though has had a poor season and I wish we could ship him out somehow, notwithstanding he tries hard and is clearly a popular guy in the dressing room. Onwards and upwards!

After the match, when asked about why he subbed out Esse, he said – not very cryptically – "I've spoken with him, and he knows why he was substituted." The clear implication was that Glasner was not happy with either Esse's decision making or effort, or both.

Or it could simply be that he wanted to give Franca game time but didn't want to throw caution to the wind and take off another core player and upset the balance of the team? It doesn't feel very 'Glasnery' to single out and openly criticise a young player. Yes he criticised the overall team performance, but I think we sometimes read inference that isn't actually there.
