Liverpool vs Crystal Palace match thread

A point away to champions Liverpool and the manager is not happy, I do like it.

'Palace should have beaten Liverpool', I thought so too, TM was great btw.

Next time I am expecting 9-0 to Palace to avenge that defeat, ok I'll take 7-0 for the home drubbing under Roy.

Anything less and we are rubbish.

🙂🙂🙂🙂
Yes, probably if Hughes, Eze and Mateta had stayed on.

True. Wonder how a young Wilf would have developed in a Glasner team?
In all honesty I don't think he would have much. Zaha for all intents and purposes was given so much freedom and leeway to do whatever he wanted a vast majority of the time, and i'm sure you'd agree with me that in his younger years he was more prone to frustration and whinging. Glasner seemingly has no tolerance for these things.
But look, there's more than one way to shape a diamond, just need to believe that Glasners method will work on the players we currently have.

In their early days at Palace both Eze and Olise were quite often guilty of over-doing it, beating one or two then trying to beat the third man when a simple pass was on to someone in on goal - we fly up in support when we break so if you give the ball away we're immediately outnumbered in midfield and defence - all Glasner has to say to Esse is 'Wolves yes, Liverpool no'. Esse's a bright kid and he knows he's at the right club so I'm sure he'll take it on board. I've noticed Franca has been left out of the whole matchday squad at times, so as others have intimated there may well be a bit of youthful exuberance which turns into ego there too, but they must see that if they accept the manager's judgement then their reward will be success, so I look forward to seeing them improve like Hughes, Mateta AND Eze. Good also to see Kamada continue to shine.

really looking forward to the 2025 / 26 season friendlies to see how the periphery players have developed throughout the summer, who is in favour, in line for first team call ups & who got sent out on loan / where they go.

When Esse was at Millwall I suspect he was allowed more freedom to do what he wanted, bit like Wilf. Being subbed off when your a sub is quite humiliating, he won't want that again, so I suspect he'll listen a bit more carefully next time.

Ollie may have used a game with no pressure on the result to make a general point about his expectations. Esse was possibly unfortunate to be the one chosen but he's young and has the summer to work on his game.

Was he subbed because he was under par or because he wanted another fringe player to get some game time?

If Glasner has commented directly on this, then I have not been listening.

He didn't name anyone but he wasn't happy with some performances.

I would agree with OG, we had a lot of opportunities but the sharpness shown in recent fixtures wasn’t there. Having said that Liverpool were little better. It was a game with little on it, so a number of players were going through the motions.
A couple of our so called star players were’ nt doing enough but most were on the job thought Mitchell was very good.

You miss the whole point, Glasner is a professional and every game matters to him. Esse obviously didn't follow his instructions and annoyed him, so he was hooked.
Its Glasner's way or you are out, see Holding and Edouard, a bit like Alex Ferguson used to be.

After the match, when asked about why he subbed out Esse, he said – not very cryptically – "I've spoken with him, and he knows why he was substituted." The clear implication was that Glasner was not happy with either Esse's decision making or effort, or both.

This is the first time I have noticed Glasner even remotely annoyed after his interview about the match. Not just about young Esse (hope he takes it in good part) but generally about others in the team not pulling their weight. Once again Palace didn't take advantage when opposition down to ten - that annoyed me and, definitely, Glasner.
Just proves he takes everything seriously and expects his players to do the same. This 'no nonsense' attitude should stand us in good stead if he remains as manager.

It was bizarre, where did you get your info?

He played some nice touches before, probably could have taken an extra touch before crossing to Nketiah. Then held the ball too long after that.
Very big decision from Glasner to do that if he is making a point
OG has always advised the players to play without fear and express themselves. OK, so Esse lost the ball and was immediately substituted, but that donkey Eddie N. comes in in every game and gives us nothing but falling over, missing passes and chances (I know he scored twice agains Wolves, but blind chicken also find corn) - and he is still allowed to continue. For sure we need a huge upgrade on the JPM reserve striker. Would not mind Vardy, actually and I am pretty sure Esse will be a hit for us.

No idea what the actual reason for Esse, being pulled in the way he was, he seemed busy but OG knows what he wanted from him, and that’s that, I can’t help feeling the kid got on the wrong side of an already frustrated manager, because the game could have been won well before Esse, got on the pitch, OG,s mood already formed.

That may well be right but Man U were a highly successful club most players wanted to play for and so would accept his strictures and we're not there yet.

In my opinion Esse did not follow instructions - and OG has made his point clearly. Which is the right thing to do - boy clearly has talent - but playing in the big league now - and still at lot to prove..!! IMO OG quite right to send the message do as I say - hopefully Esse takes it on board..!! COYP..!!

Amongst the last 7 games we faced Arsenal, Villa, Spurs, Man City and Liverpool and remain unbeaten.
That's quite an achievement, even if some may argue that some of those clubs were on the beach.
The same argument was employed during our excellent run at the end of last season.

The facts are that Glasner has us organised, defensively sound, and effective in transition.
He's earned the right to demand still more and insist players maintain a team ethic.

The next challenge will be to find a way to beat teams that sit deep as we found to our cost v the likes of Brentford and Everton.
An effective plan B so to speak .
