Liverpool vs Crystal Palace match thread

i think the criticism of Esse is a bit OTT. Yes he did lose the ball but right down near the corner flag, there was a lot of play before they scored from it - an unconvincing header from Mitch and Devenney massively ball watching to allow Salah to walk past him to score.

I've seen Zaha do similar many times over the years and never be criticised by manager or supporters.

We had a lot of potential 3 on 2s etc in the last 20 minutes and players like Sarr and Eddie made bad passes or decisions. JP had a couple of offsides in the 1st half that he should have avoided if he was more switched on etc.

Is Esse being over managed? When he broke away on the left earlier he played a very early ball into the box rather than taking a touch which seemed the obvious thing to do - was this the managers words in his ear (don't muck about play it early etc).

I don't think it's necessarily an ego thing, maybe he is just struggling to adjust to OG's ways. There is a good player in there
We now have a manager that sets high standards and expects the maximum from his players.

Wilf's self indulgence would unlikely to have been tolerated by Oliver Glasner.

I was surprised that Esse got hooked. He's young, raw and still learning the game. It looks like that was a harsh lesson being handed out to him. I'm sure OG was interested to see how Esse took it. I thought he looked pretty miserable at Selhurst Park yesterday afternoon !

After the match, when asked about why he subbed out Esse, he said – not very cryptically – "I've spoken with him, and he knows why he was substituted." The clear implication was that Glasner was not happy with either Esse's decision making or effort, or both.
I can remember in one particular game in the early 70’s Palace had a young left back named Bill Roffey, Malcolm Allison who was manager at the time sub’ed him off after 15 minutes. After the game when Allison was asked why he replied “he wasn’t doing what he was told to do” Think he joined the exodus of players joining Orient not long after.

There's a saying you're as good as your last game.

Sadly for Esse that was played out in front of a worldwide tv audience in the last game of the season, with no next game this Saturday to get it out of his system.
Hopefully it won't fester over the summer for him.

Football can be a harsh game where resilience and a degree of self confidence are prerequisites, so the incident shouldn't throw him off his stride.

I think Ollie has made his point. Esse looks a good player. He won’t forget this and it will make him better for it. If he is not better and stronger, if the message that the team MUST come first then he is not worth having onboard. Either way it was probably worth doing. That will sink in deeper than any talking to he would get at training.
