Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace League Cup match thread

Its a really odd game to draw any conclusions from. It was such a poor Liverpool team and bench anything other than a Palace win would have been pretty surprising.

So happy that Pino got a goal, and great to see some of the link up with him, Sarr and Kamada.

All of the Kamada haters surely must be convinced by now, the guy is absolutely class. We have to do everything we can to get him to re-sign.
Liverpool's starting line-up included 7 Internationals.
Endo has over 70 caps for Japan, Chiesa over 50 caps for Italy, Robertson has nearly 90 caps for Scotland,McAllister is a World Cup winner, Gomez has played over 150 times for Liverpool and as played for England, Kerkez and Ramsay have both played for Hungary and Scotland respectively.

Our starting line-up was missing Henderson, Richards, Wharton, Mateta, Mitchell.

Kerkez and McAllister were the only starters who featured and the latter hasn't been a consistent contributor this season.
Let's not try and dress that Liverpool team up as something it wasn't.
I doubt that more than one or two will play for them at the weekend, whereas we may well have at least six of our lineup starting.
Few on here not have fancied our chances when Liverpool's lineup was revealed.

Is there any benefit in pretending it wasn't a poor Liverpool team?

It was a great performance from us, and not often you get to go and win so convincingly at Anfield, but when you compare the two named XIs, we were clear favourites.

I'd suggest any attempt to not recognise Liverpool were far from full strength is only self-delusion.

It was still Liverpool however, they did still have Int'l players on the pitch, and we went without some regulars ourselves and brought on a few fringe players.

And, more than anything else, we beat them 0-3 at their place. Have that, scouse mugs 🤓

I didn't see the match, anyone have an impression on how well the new centre back did?

Canvot?

Pretty solid game, albeit he had not much to do. Will no doubt restore confidence after his howler against Larnaca however he does look athletic and comfortable on the ball which I like. He's only played a handful of competetive games so is expectedly not looking the finished article, but still an exciting prospect nonetheless.

I think overcoming the aforementioned snag will be huge for his psyche. He kept a clean sheet at Anfield plus won 0-3. That's gotta do him some good.

Cheers dude.

That's really annoying. Felt he was just getting going for us and starting to positively contribute. Hopefully it's not too bad as he didn't have to pull up or anything. Glasner needs to just take a gamble and chuck Uche on up top for 20 mins now to give Mateta a break as he's gonna be absolutely shattered with all the upcoming games. If I was gonna be critical I'd have said it would have been better to bring Uche on at HT yesterday just to give him some more practice in that position.
I agree that Uche ought to have been on for the 2nd half especially given the state of the game at that point and Liverpool bench options.

My immediate reaction to his yellow was "Hasn't he learnt from the Arsenal mistake?" Clearly not. Hopefully OG will have a word.
He's not a kid if he hasn't learned by now I doubt he will change. We just have to accept that he will make this rash challenges, given the choice of the lazy so and so who doesn't put himself about or Pino I know which one I would prefer.

Oh do give it a rest, what point are you trying to make? That it was a really good Liverpool first team?

Most of their team and bench were making their debuts, or had only played the odd game previously. A couple had next to no professional experience.

Of the senior player that played, only McAllister and Kerkez could really be considered first team starters. Endo, Gomez, Robertson and Chiesa squad players and most of them are on the outside of the squad.

They also had a bench exclusively made up of academy players.

Great result but odd game. For the first 30 mins our defence coped well with a poor Liverpool attack. Then Kamada and Pino woke up and decided that we could win this game. After that it was joyous to be hold as our front players were as good as our defence.

Very odd selection by Slott but who cares not our problem. Let's just hope that Arteta has the same idea, "it's only Palace lads, put out the B team."

Some great goals and hopefully our front players are now full of confidence. Looking forward to Brentford now I am a bit more positive.

Yes, let's not get carried away. No U-21 team is beating League 1 teams this year in the Football League Trophy and Liverpool's line-up was approaching that level. Sarr got more room and made them pay. Pino's pass for the second goal was excellent but Alisson would have saved his shot and he needs to prove it against better opposition
Brentford did the double over us last year and I hope we can rectify that. But it was the same scenario with Everton

Winning 3 nil away from home and I can't get a little carried away?

Pino patrols a similar area on the pitch that Eze used to - he needs to take a leaf out of Eze's book, don't get involved in tackling, especially if you can't or your timing is wrong. Play to your strengths - pass move, pass, move.

Personally i saw a very young player who looks a little uncomfortable in a 3 at the back and especially with the ball at his feet. Played very risk free passes every time.

The one time we were caught out with a long ball in the first half i thought he should have prevented the shot from Chiesa - he got back well and then seemed to overrun the ball allowing a free shot which could have resulted in a goal.

Still early days but if say Guehi left in Jan he would not be a like for like replacement

very harsh.

Pino has shown in glimpses he is a talented player - his ball control is great.
However, physically he has struggled a little and also with the pace of a prem game.

With the formation we play the two number 10 roles are unique - not quite wingers - so a winger struggles to adapt a little (Eze not being a winger always felt comfortable in the role). It took Sarr at least 3 months and look at him now.

I was surprised we played Pino all game, but the late goal will do him loads of confidence. Also it was right in the corner using the defender as a barrier - i think very few goalies would save it.

Yep not a like for like, but he's never going to be. Lad has played 20 odd pro games, and Marc is, well Marc.

We need to keep giving him minutes where possible, and Chadi when he returns. But realistically we'll likey need to buy a Guehi replacement. If the club see real potential in Chadi and Jaydee, that replacement could be a bit older/experienced.

Its is however a long season and we'il have injuries where these guys will need to step up for a handful of games

I think the key with Pino is to try and avoid nearly every pass to him resulting in a 50/50 challenge which ends up with him losing the ball or conceding a foul.
Try and find him in space with the correct weight of pass so he can demonstrate his range of clever control and passes.
He keeps the team shape when defending and works hard, but we need to see more of the attacking skills which he demonstrated on occasions last night.
