Liverpool vs. Crystal Palace League Cup match thread

Canvot did ok. In the first half he kept losing Chiesa which resulted in him having two shots that Richards would not have allowed. However, he grew into the game and finished very strong. He is young and is going to make one or two mistakes but he is learning and he is built like a tank!
Agreed.

His simple pass to Kamada ended up in the best move/goal of the game, via Pino to Sarr in space created by an excellent run by Nketiah (in the side to give the talismanic Mateta a rest). If that isn’t a list of players who there were question marks over initially, but have come pretty good, I don’t know what is.

Cardines is as a right wing back - he was brought into the senior team as cover and hopefully an eventual replacement for Munoz. He came on for Munoz briefly at the end of the Kiev game. We should see quite a bit more of him in future games.

Clyne, besides being 34, is not a wing back. His contract was extended one more year to provide some extra cover for central defence (esp.before Canvot was signed).

Incorrect he is a left back he is left footed as well.

Go and look up his history he has never played at right back before. (Palace are trying to force it because they couldn't be bothered to go sign a proper right back even when there was many options out there and for not even high prices)

CLyne used to play that role and what is the point of him another poor decision to resign him he is offering nothing just like Ward last season.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Clyne and Ward can play multiple positions. We have been fairly lucky with our injuries over the last few years but sometimes you have to have backup. We have AFCON coming up soon what if at the same time we lose a few key players to injury?

You never know when we could be scratching around to put out a team let alone the luxury of players in the correct positions.

I think Ward and Clyne were no brainers, happy to be part of the squad and not too expensive. In hindsight we probably didn't need them but we didn't know that at the time.

I think most PL clubs will have a player like that.

Slot is being found out as a fraud. He won the title last year with basically Klopp's team, now he has brought in his players at great expense and can't blend together a winning team.
It's not about how much money you can spend on players, but getting a team spirit and winning mentality, which Glasner appears to do with ease.
I said this in the summer. I said he would be found out. All he had to do was keep Klopps team standing upright because arsenal and city imploded.

I personally think he’s gone by Xmas.

I played left back I was right footed found it easier than right back , so your point is , I know must find fault at all costs

Wiki says he's a RB and Transfermarkt a LB.
HOWEVER, his entry on the Crystal Palace site says:

"Rio Cardines joined Palace at the age of 16, he is capable of playing either left-back or right-back or in a more advanced role if needed. Though he is predominantly a right-back, he can also slot in on the wing or anywhere else across the defence if required".

But then, the Palace site list him among the midfielders rather than the defenders.

Perhaps we should simply say he's a utility player who can fit in where needed.

Thanks doombear, that's useful (I say as one of many who has not much idea, if any!).

Another idea might not be to attack fellow users with hostility over a fairly trivial let alone ambiguous point 🤣

Just an idea though...

Yep not a like for like, but he's never going to be. Lad has played 20 odd pro games, and Marc is, well Marc.

We need to keep giving him minutes where possible, and Chadi when he returns. But realistically we'll likey need to buy a Guehi replacement. If the club see real potential in Chadi and Jaydee, that replacement could be a bit older/experienced.

Its is however a long season and we'il have injuries where these guys will need to step up for a handful of games
Alaba could be a decent replacement for MG, quite similar style of players in my opinion, both are reading the game so well.

I fear that at the age of 33 and after serious injuries time may approach when he will just read about the games, at least those at top level.

Rio Cardines continues to build on his international experience, having been selected once again for the Trinidad and Tobago senior national team in the third round of 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying in September.

The full-back played the full 90 minutes in both of Trinidad’s opening Group B fixtures, starting at right-back and delivering composed performances across both matches.

Cardines made his senior international debut against Jamaica in the Unity Cup in May. Since then, he has become a staple at right back for coach Dwight Yorke's TT team and played all three matches at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup and has started the team's last three Fifa 2026 World Cup qualifying matches.
