Leeds v Crystal Palace Match Thread

Look at it again and you'll see our tactics were all wrong for the players we had available. Without Munoz in particular there is no point expecting runs from both wing backs. Without Sarr, there is no out ball on one side. Hence, when you look back at it, Leeds marked Mateta - who already didn't look great. Pino runs down blind alleys so they stand off him - notice how there are always two or three guys in front of him in the end. That leaves Nketiah and he's not at his best out wide. He was largely isolated - the front three were not close enough together all match.
In addition, Wharton looked like he was under instruction to burst forward. It was nice to see. However, that left Hughes exposed in front of the back three. Leeds largely by passed that anyway by playing wide. They ran at Clyne in particular. Often, he wasn't there to run at. He was too far up the pitch. We were constantly chasing them down the wings and people were having to cover from the center. We were being pulled side to side.
A formation change could have perhaps countered that. But it didn't look like we were fully at the races anyway.
I'd say 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 would have let us progress through the middle and covered the gaps out wide. Even then, our approach was wrong. We should have been defensive but we were very attacking. We underestimated them and they not only out fought us, they also put thought us. Glasner has a tonne of credit in the bank but this was largely down to him.
very good points, but I think we were OK first half, 63% possession after 30 min, good approach play, lovely turns from Pino and Wharton to set up chances but not clicking in the final third - again! They picked us off and we got our marking all wrong on their throws and another severe case of second half syndrome, Lerma replacing Hughes led us to losing control in midfield, Mateta should have come off earlier, but we nearly got it back to 2-3 before Sosa screwed up. This team were rested so tiredness/Europe is no excuse - we were due a poor performance, it happens, a lot of posters are predicting a sudden downward trend. We can bounce back with returning players and a couple of additions, but is there a two-week winter break this year cos this team does need freshening up? Also I'm starting to think it might be time to consider cashing in on Mateta, he may have peaked and we could get silly money atm, maybe even enough to get a reliable striker - which don't come cheap of course.

Last season Mateta only scored 2 goals from February onwards, a total of 14 games.
This season he has only scored a solitary goal in 'Open Play' in his last 14 games.
Would it be fair to say that the quality of chances has dropped off, and he is getting less service recently or do you think he has just run out of steam?
I personally think it is a bit of both!

I know our conversion rate based on Xg is terrible (especially JP) but I come away from some games where we have dominated and had in my opinion great chances and the xg is less than 1 and then there are games where I think we didn’t create anything and the xg is 3-4.
xg is a flawed ratings system, however we can all see that JP is not the player he was for whatever reason.

and the melt down begins , we was awful yes , everything we was good at , we didn't do well couldn't do , reminds of last season let in 10 goals without reply in in 2 match's , last night was nothing todo with tired players they more or less had a full weeks recovery .
windows coming up we need a RWB cant replace inured Munoz , like cant replace Eze and Olise like for like ,
Best we can do is get someone at least 80/ 85% as good as a good stand in , another goal scorer midfield preferred easy said than done , another CB maybe striker so thats 4 , with couple of the kids showing promise can turn this round , more than likely do something stupid on Tuesday and win the good old palace way , we have done it so many times ,

So heads up keep the faith we have been sploit the past year as fans COYP
Appreciate your point. However when we have done so well this year it makes a sudden downturn all the harder. From 'very good to bad' is a much bigger drop than from 'mediocre to bad! '
Hopefully once we get this next week out of the way things will start to improve again.

JP certainly isn’t the player he was and that also affects the two either side of him. He isn’t winning the balls as much which means he isn’t winning/ passing to those two. Plus of course he isn’t scoring enough especially when given chances or being found with lack of decent balls to him which is also down to others not playing as well lately. Saying that, has others noticed Guehi has had a number of passes from him going astray which hasn’t helped? The players are shattered and with others injured or away, together with a small squad has meant players out of position and making the team weaker. Can’t see how we can improve on this until players are back and we bring in enough reinforcements. Will that happen?

I'm a huge fan of my countryman Chris Richards, whom I appreciated perhaps a little sooner than did most other Palace fans. However, after superb work during our glorious successful streak, in the past few weeks he has made a number of unfortunate mistakes of omission. The first Haaland goal, and a couple of yesterday's, looked to me to have been preventable if only he'd been a little more alert and focused.

I'm very optimistic about the remainder of the season, provided that our irreplaceable players (Muñoz, Sarr, Wharton, and 3 of our 4 defenders) become healthy and remain so.

It was clear in the first 20 minutes that we were in trouble playing a well organised Leeds team who were well up for it. They were quicker, more aggressive and starving us of time to play.

Missing Munoz and Sarr is a massive problem.

Well played Leeds.

2025 has still been the best year I’ve seen in 53 years. I’m so proud of what they’ve done and forgive them for being unable to cope with all of the games being thrown at them. We’re Palace. There will be ups and downs. 2025 was sensational. COYP

What's the latest time frames on injuries does anyone know? Need Munoz back asap and also the sooner Daichi comes back so we have some cover in CM, the better.

Uche to start up front for me from now on.

Making excuses.

SP runs the club the other billionaires are meaningless they have given him the power to do the day to day running.

The guy is not a good business man which is why he has only made money of the backs of others plus him currently taking out of the club is how he has his wealth.

I am not even going to getting into the shady stuff on how he managed to take over the club with lets not forget others it wasn't just himself.

Tex funded the academy.

What the team did on the pitch is not down to SP that is on those players and OG.

Palace has money but he wont do what all proper business people do take risks and has no ambition this is very clear to see with the constant selling best players and not then spending to replace (Always looking for bargains and even then messing about so we end up losing out on very good targets)

You have forgot that SP was the one that brought those names you listed minus Johnson into the club because he didn't want to fund it himself.

You do know we are running on a negative budget. So the idea that we have money comes from where?
I guess this comes from someone saying we have wiggleroom in FTP. Maybe we do.

But we do not have wiggle room for SRC(Uefa) wich is 70%. So if we want to play in Europe like we are we have to reduce salaries. I think right now we are pretty much at 70%.

And with a 200m build of the stand as well, that isn't going to make a profit in 20 years.

Post match Glasner made the point that you ‘have to win duels’ to win matches and pointed out that we lost them all over the field.

This was unusual for our defence, but perhaps not unexpected at the front with JPM struggling for form and fitness and Pino and Nketiah comparatively lightweight and continually outmuscled.

Fortunately not many teams play like Leeds with continual bombardment and a game based exclusively on set pieces and long throws.
And in fairness we dealt well with Brentford who also put us under significant physical pressure.

Offensively we miss Sarr and Munoz , but I wouldn’t underestimate the loss of their defensive roles either. Both win lots of headers and are very physical and athletic players at set pieces.
This was our worst performance this season and possibly the only time we’ve lost a league game this season when we were never really in it.
We played ok against the likes of Everton, Arsenal, Man United and Man City and were competetive in the games.
Yesterday the affliction even seemed to affect our most consistent performers in our defensive line.
I’m hoping it’s a one off.

We have no chance whatsoever of winning the Carabao Cup given we are at Arsenal on Tuesday.Even if by sheer fluke we emerge victorious we will not prevail over the remaining teams.
I have expressed privately, and perhaps on HOL, that we have reached our summit and we are on that slippery slope towards a camp well south of the pinnacle.
I fully accept that but as FA cup winners reaching a semi final in the new year even by fluke, can only be positive both for fans and raising the profile of the club. It might make the difference between a player choosing to sign for us or another club.
