Lies are seeded all the time from intelligence, foreign and domestic, corporate (in fact, all forms of power wealthy enough to do it) into the media and amplified by a sometimes paid and sometime politically zealous section of media.
Then you have activists and so on.
No doubt it's always been this way but many many people are fundamentally trusting and believe what they are told......Same as most people in Russia, same as most people anywhere.
The nature of what is true ultimately has to be discerned by the individual from observation and choice.
Obviously you can't live a life doubting everything....for example most will accept that atoms exist, even though they will have no way of checking. So really it comes down to what you deem the motivations of others are....at the organisational or individual level and what their relationship to 'warts and all' truth is.
Some of us will have engaged in lying or half truths because of pressures put on us (usually money or love) or political zealotry or cynicism, nihilism. Even the very best people have been hypocrites over something in their lives.
Though obviously some are more conscientious than others and/or want to improve those aspects in life.
We will all get it wrong in life, because we are human....I was wrong on Iraq....unfortunately some never learn from mistakes or just get it wrong more than others.
