Joel Ward

We should have said goodbye to him in the summer with some other the other players who went.

He contributes nothing and is taking up a spot in the senior squad plus costing the club millions.

Too chummy with Parish which is why he was kept.

Football tends to place money over sentiment so the club must have thought he still had/has some value even if only as cover.

That’s the spirit….there’s always a bright side ! 🙂

This thread feels, to me, a tad premature to be discussing Joel's departure when there hasn't yet been any announcement from the club.

He's taken a lot of stick on here in the past, but here's little doubt he's has been an outstandingly loyal and valuable member of our squad who will only play for us again if there is a really serious injury situation. That's fine and shows a good mark of respect from the club at the moment. We can expect him to leave or maybe take up a non playing role in the summer.

A testimonial would seem a fitting tribute and I like Lanzo's suggestion that Pompey would be a suitable opponent. In the meantime I hope he continues to support his teammates from the dugout. An all round decent bloke.

We could play a Portsmouth all stars team except after Sol Campbell had taken out his million pound payment there wouldn't be much point.

I can't understand why the club has never given him a testimonial.
does he need one? He's been on over £30k a week for the last 10 years or so, so must be a multi millionaire by now.

Not knocking him, but the reason for testimonials is to give the player a financial boost at the end of their career.

Arguably giving him an extra contract last summer when he was never going to play was SP's way of thanking him for his services (as he did with others e.g. Paddy Mac, DD etc)

It's not just about the money though and a lot of players donate the proceeds to charity. It's also a chance for the fans to show their appreciation for a long serving player.

To paraphrase you from another thread . . . "another idiot to add to the ignore list" nes pa?

Wardy is a 100 percenter and deserves credit.

He got a reprieve when we sold AWB and filled the gap satisfactorily. He is a good guy to have around the club.

Lovely sentiments to our longest serving player, all the best to you too

Anyone know what’s going on with him? Didn’t think he was injured but hasn’t played in ages. Not particularly missing him but he is our captain so strange he’s not around the squad at all.
Yes, can anyone tell me where I can find the Geriatric Ward.

Joking aside, he's been very good for us, but I think we may have seen the last of him on the pitch.

When I think of some of the overpaid lazy wastes of space we’ve had, I think Wardy deserves a bit more respect for the commitment he’s always shown when he pulls on the shirt
Maybe it is a season too far, but obviously with the way injuries can mount up we might have needed him a bit more this season

Rubbish. An owner is not going to keep any player if he is not up to it. Glasner would have been consulted on whether to release him last summer. He works with all of them on the training ground. He knows Ward's fitness levels, his current capabilities as well as his professionalism. Thats the reason he was kept on as back up. And you can bet if he is needed he will put in a shift like he always does.

I played right back so have always had a soft spot for the like of Edworthy, Butterfield and, for the past decade, Joel Ward. Absolute legend and will be a sad day when he inevitably leaves/retires.

Am guessing he has declined a bit in the past 6 months or Glasner would have played him occasionally, shame. Thoroughly deserves a testimonial.
