Internationals

With the exception of Pickford, all those chosen to start the game play for teams that could be deemed to be "winners":
  • Real Madrid - Bellingham
  • Bayern Munich - Kane
  • Man City - Walker & Foden
  • Arsenal - Lewis-Skelly & Rice
  • Villa - Konsa & Rashford
  • Newcastle - Burn
  • Liverpool - Jones
All those teams either play in the CL or (in the case of Newcastle) have won a trophy this season.

Is Tuchel working on the basis he wants players who are used to having a winning mentality?
Is that going to provide more motivation than for players who are hungry to prove themselves though?

Perhaps but England managers have a history of picking players "who have never let their country down" and yet we still don't win anything.

Form should also come into it.

Michael Olise starred for France tonight with a goal and an assist for France v Croatia.

Would the England management tried harder to bring him on board if he had played for a big club rather than “lil ole’ Palace”?

Yes it should. Same old pick players from big clubs and “leaders” rather than those in from who fit a system. Look at Spain in the Euros. Can you imagine an England manager picking a player like Nico Williams playing for a club like Athletico Bilbao or starting a 16 year old like Yamine Lamal?

Then again would England ever have as manager with no club record but lots of success with the players who had come through the age groups for the national side? No we have to have ‘big names’

Annoyingly I agree this post, but Lewis Skelly? I have a feeling he will become a fixture like Saka.

And Wharton when he goes somewhere bigger.

In fairness, there are 3 Palace players in the squad of 23. One must start, one is 50/50, and the other is a (maybe?) impact sub.

Having said what I did earlier about picking winners, I do expect Tuchel will pick Guehi to start tonight and that Eze may get some minutes off the bench. I would be surprised if he gives Dean a game in goal, though, but all things are possible.
Both on now. Maybe Pickfords error with the Latvia chance will persuade Tuechel to try Dean in goal for the next game?

Eze on with about 30 mins to go and scored his first England goal. Looks very lively.

When Eze came on, it was like someone lit a firework.
He was the best player from then on. Had the skill to run at the defence and use the ball well.
Rashford is great at running through, but then delivers very average balls into the box.
Pickford had his usual moment. At least all the pundits recognised it was his fault not Guehi.
