The number of people who are net contributors to the tax pool is shrinking.
A few years ago I did a quick exercise where I used a benefits calculator to see what I could get.
2 adults and 2 children school age
1 working adult salary minimum wage
Renting property in the London area
Taxes paid
Income tax and national Insurance
Council Tax
Total tax paid about £3k
Benefits
Housing benefit (3 bed semi)
Working Tax benefit
Child Allowance
Council Tax discount (up to 100%)
Estimate of benefits £30k
Not included
Cost of Education and Health care
These numbers will have changed but you get the picture. A huge disconnect between tax paid and benefits received.
We can't continue along this path, as the demographics of getting older and starting work later keep going up the burden falls more and more on the middle classes.
