Immigration

I realise that. But I'm always checked in Ireland. What's the difference?
Always thought it was because of Dublin airport and how ridiculous it is in how it's set up and where the flights land.

You will notice in Gatwick you land at a different part of the airport.

I did a few flights to Belfast to get away with the Covid (flu) checks a few years ago and no one checked my passport or anything else.

I can't help but feel that the UK isn't bothering but I'm also wondering why Ireland bothers? It's not like they're not letting people in. Perhaps we just like to be officious. You would think that the stereotypes and lack of available statistics would point to the other way round.

I do.

My views are almost certainly not what you think they are, though.

I want illegal immigration stopped as much as the next person. It's a cruel trade in vulnerable people. The problem is not the desire, it's the way it can be achieved. Whilst a demand exists, unscrupulous people will exploit it. Remove the demand and the problem disappears, but that's unattainable. So detecting and arresting those behind it is the only answer. That demands international cooperation so it can be cut off at source and all the way down the supply chains.

I approve of controlled legal migration of those with the skills needed in our economy, whilst there are shortages. Eliminate the shortages, and you eliminate the need for this too. I approve of students from overseas using our Universities just as I do our citizens going abroad to study. International experience of other cultures helps us create a world of understanding. I approve of family migration. Families need to be together, and love doesn't stop at country borders.

That is what I believe most people think too.
Removing the demand to come here illegally is attainable FFS.

It isn’t.

People will be spun stories and those desperate enough will believe them. The demand will be there until their own country looks as attractive to them.
We merely stop giving any support whatsoever to them - they would stop coming within a couple of days. We need to cease expanding and enhancing their lives.

The most common nationalities arriving in the UK via small boats are Afghan, Syrian, Iranian, Vietnamese, Albanian, Iraqi, Pakistani and Eritrean. So all we have to do is make those eight countries look as attractive as Britain?

It wouldn’t stop the demand!

That exists in their country of origin, and not here. The traffickers will only tell them about pavements of gold etc.

In any event not providing support would make things worse, not better. Hungry and cold people steal. Compassionate people seeing starving children step in to help and put political pressure on governments and protest. Breaking international treaties damages our reputation as a trusted partner and pioneer in human rights built up over centuries.

Stopping the trade is the answer. Not hurting those exploited by it.

As I said in my post at 11.58 yesterday that’s unattainable so not a practical solution. The demand is not going to evaporate anytime soon.

I have travelled the world and been to some far and distant places. Everybody has a mobile these days and are well informed about what they feel is relevant to their lives.

If we decided to stop all benefits for asylum seekers and will only house them in migrant camps whilst their claim is processed (like the French do) word will soon get around. The Australians turned back the boats and at the start they kept coming and trying all sorts of tricks, once they realised that wasn't going to work demand dried up.

Across Europe the likes of Denmark, Sweden, Holland and now Germany are making it harder and less attractive for Asylum seekers and it's working. So the UK is standing out even more as an attractive place to head for.

They don't stay in France because the French give them very little. The political will does not exist here to do anything that is effective - Australia sorted out their problem, we could too. The ordinary people of Britain are the ones being exploited. With the current situation, what is going on in Eire at the moment is going to become more and more commonplace - enjoy!

The government should ask Israel for some advice. They didn't have a problem stopping Greta Thunderbird.
But she was kidnapped. She might want to have a word with the Israelis who were kidnapped raped and murdered by Hamas, they and their families might have a different definition.

She made me laugh about the image of her accepting a sandwich from an Israeli soldier. She called it a PR stunt, "well you would know all about them madam".

It's Northern Ireland, UK. It would unlikely be a riot in the Republic of Ireland. The lads wouldn't even be charged here.
