That unfortunate comment was made nearly 8 years ago and, from memory, was condemned by her own party as inappropriate. A lot has been learned since then. I have enormous sympathy for the police who try to catch these criminals, gather enough evidence to satisfy the CPS whilst maintaining social harmony in some difficult areas and having to do so with resources frequently being trimmed.

Policing by consent and benefitting from the willing cooperation of the local community is a keystone of the way our society functions.

It isn’t always possible but when it isn’t we must provide significantly enhanced resources or accept there will be major hurdles created.

That there have been major failures is well documented. Pointing it out again solves nothing and doesn’t change the basic fact that where social harmony exists cooperation improves and crime solving becomes easier.

The point is questioning the attitudes that created those failures.
Besides which your view was that no assumptions should be made until the reports were available. Then the reports appeared and now nothing should be said anyway.

This is the crux of the matter. The girls involved were the victims. They were ignored then and are being sidelined now.

It's not my motive. The government has refused to have a national enquiry; is that for political gain?

Could it be that most of the councils where this happened were labour led as were the politicians who obfuscated.

I don't doubt that there are guilty Tories as well but I suspect the majority were on the left.

I accept what you say, as it’s said from experience. The fact remains that without sight we don’t know. That said we know there was a different attitude back then and every department is indeed staffed by individuals, some of whom are capable of writing inappropriate circulars. So it could be true.

Dragging it up is though exactly what has been done. This is very obviously something Badenoch has done now to change the focus away from the spat on the comparative membership between the Tories and Reform.

If not, why now?
