Fulham vs. Crystal Palace match thread

Agree on this - he was really solid, as he always has been over the last few seasons.

But I can't help but ask the question as to why he has barely played a minute of the season to date - if he's good enough to play in an away Premier League win, which he clearly is, it does baffle me somewhat that Glasner has not used him at any other point.

It's all speculative of course, but taking the Munoz injury story at face value... surely we could have reduced his workload over the last month or so by utilising the fantastically reliable Clyne.
The only thing I can think is that Glasner trusts Clyne to come in and be that experienced pro who helps out at a pinch which he did.

I felt more comfortable with Clyne in the right back position than Canvot.

Clyne is experienced, knows positioning and where to shepherd opponents.
Canvot is inexperienced, not a natural right back and tends to stand too far off his opponent - not a criticism as it's not his position and he obviously is in the early stages of his career.

It would be no surprise if Clyne starts on Thursday in the absence of Munoz.

With Clyne and Nketiah playing we could in theory play 4-4-2 with Guehi stepping up into a holding midfielder allowing Pino and/or Kamada to support Mateta and Nketiah. But then again it’s OG so it will be same as normal but with no attacking threat down the right.

It was always going to be 3-4-2-1. It always is and always will be under OG. Unless we are losing he will never change formations.

Why bother even considering alternatives - i did read your final sentence BTW

Yes, maybe that is his secret, never change anything, the players always know what to do, players out of position, weird subs, but it seems to work, long may it continue

Palace denied a pen, looks like it:-

😎
Have watched this the thing that struck me most is that Dermot Gallagher cannot bring himself to say yes it was a penalty. He accepts it was a foul but says it was outside the area! Jay Bothroyd seems shocked at that and asks for the incident to be shown again. This plainly shows that, without any doubt, the foul took place inside the area. Dermot is left looking sheepish and foolish.

Either he just can't bring himself to criticise his referee buddies, he is blind, plain incompetent - or all three. Whichever it is, he should not be anywhere near a show that purports to offer unbiased opinions on debatable refereeing decisions.

I'm torn between thinking that and whether he looks slightly like a player who's had his head turned and has therefore somewhat mentally departed from the team.

JPM has been fantastic for us but if he is eyeing a move, I don't think he's in a position to lose form. He'll only go on to perceived bigger/better so long as he is playing well.

He needs to recapture that for his own sake, and of course ours.
He is still running himself into the ground so don't think so myself

Just a question of tactics, Glasners system depends on wings backs getting up the line with cover provided by the extra CB (Richards). For that you need the energy to get up and down the line. Clyne has always done that in the past but not yesterday, great as full back but since Roy left thats not whats demanded. Glasners other choices, Kropha, Cardines, Sosa all crocked.

We all love a tryer but if you really want to see what was going on compare the heat maps of Mitchell and Clyne.

You can say churlish even unfair but its reality and I have no doubt Glasner is bending Parish's ear about cover for Munoz.

He's always the same. If the ref pulled out a Dirty Harry Magnum and shot a player Gallagher would say he only tried to wing him so even though he blew a striker's head off it wasn't deliberate and the ref did well to hit him at all from that distance.

I get all of that - obviously Munoz and Clyne are miles apart in profile, but yesterday showed that we can still be a functional side with Clyne in it, so it does beg the question as to why we haven't done it sooner.

Of course Munoz is a much better player and a much better fit for the system, but we evidently could have rotated him more and it wouldn't have been catastrophic.

We weren't poor, we weren't lucky and the substitutions were not ridiculous - posters on here saying so are silly billies and should have the humility to admit it. We had three very good chances to score before they did, and shoring up the midfield and taking off the strikers was a master stroke, we were in control last 30 min, Marco Silva is in his own parallel universe, the winner was coming. Wharton imperious, Mitchell brilliant, Guehi was Guehi, but that over-hit Pino through ball to Mateta first half was the worst pass from a Palace player since Chong Lee's up at Burnley under de Boer. I thought we were in a false position when we were fifth - I now think we fully deserve to be fourth. COYP!!!🙂😍👍
It's like Strictly Come Dancing on here sometimes. Boo hiss, someone said something negative.

The fact is that we have had poor second halves in our last few games. We scraped past a poor Burnley, got outplayed by a very average United and were just a little bit too canny for a struggling Fulham.

Of course, it's likely because of our schedule, but nevertheless, our passing v Fulham was dreadful for a long period.
The players are giving it everything, and you can't ask for more, but don't dress it up.

I'll be very surprised if we don't get battered by City on Sunday, but the big game this week is Shelbourne. That's the must win. We don't want unnecessary games in Europe with our limited squad.
Our current position is partly down to general inconsistency in the league. We are highly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League or Europa via that route.

Our best chance is more signings in January. Uche for me, looks like a Hippo on roller skates. I'll be happy to be proved wrong. Let's see what happens.

So basically, no different to when he was a woke refereeee.

I suspect that Glasner whilst obviously relieved that the Fulham goal was disallowed will be disappointed that Iwobi got a free header after a run from deep.
Kamada had a glance at Iwobi, but the latter simply ran past him with ease and rattled the bar.

The same Dermot Gallagher that refereed an FA cup game between ourselves and Leeds years back.
The one where Tommy Black hit a shot that crossed the line (therefore goal) but Michael Duberry threw himself to the floor and batted back out of the goal with his hand! All of this unfolded right in front of him. Then not only did he not award a goal but having watched Duberry blatantly handle the ball he refused to give a penalty either! Then up the other end he awards a very dodgy free kick to Leeds on the edge of our box. While Palace were setting up a wall (and BEFORE Gallagher had blown his whistle) Harry Kewell took a shoty and scored. Despite Palace's protests he waved them all away and let the goal stand. To add insult to injury he also ruled out a perfectly good goal as well (Julian Gray I think scored it). This was by a country mile the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen and this remains the case. A game we should have won 2-1 fair and square we actually unbelievably LOST 1-2!
Gallagher was actually suspended and then had to do some time refereeing in the lower leagues as a 'punishment'. Didn't help us though.
I will never take that pompous clown seriously. I find it very hard to forgive that kind of injustice

He claimed he never saw the handball (view blocked) and yet I have seen the incident from a TV camera behind the goal there is no obstruction to his view. Okay it would be difficult to award a a goal from his position, so where was the lino? But the hand ball was unforgivable.
