For one it would be good to know the description so that other people will know to avoid him or report the suspects whereabouts to avoid any further stabbings.
By not releasing details straight away it also feeds into so called "misinformation"
Why not say straight away black / white man wearing black hoodie and jeans? Do not approach this man he is violent.

Possibly for exactly the same reason that the details of the Southport attacker weren’t released until today. You don’t want to compromise your case and risk it being thrown out of court by claims of an unfair trial. Things need to be kept confidential. Just because the public are interested doesn’t mean it’s in the public interest.
