FA Cup 3rd Round Macclesfield

It really happened, yes it did - a Premiership side were beaten by a team ranked 117 places lower, which illustrated that having the correct mindset can work wonders. What now for Palace? Hit the reset button, analyse why things are on the slide, don't repeat the same mistakes over and over again. This result should be a humbling leveller for some players who think now they've played at international level they can just stroll about, and for others, this game exposed the deficiency of their technical ability, as well as mental attitude. This assessment applies equally to the manager, a man who should re-evaluate his role in this debacle.
Note to Steve Parish: buying in more players is not necessarily the answer. Judging by the awful bunch from the last transfer window, due diligence in player assessment should take priority.

Because we're like Cinderella at the ball? No wait, wrong analogy...
No right analogy. Cinderella went to the ball and danced with the Prince. She had to go back to work but lost her shoe on the way. She went back to scrubbing the floors at the beck and call of the ugly sisters. But Prince Charming came calling and it all ended happily ever after.

So if we assume that Glasner is the fairy godmother who brings Palace to Wembley where they meet a Prince. But they lose the Cup and slavishly have to work all hours at the behest of the ugly UEFA, EPL, FA and FIFA. But another Prince will come and bring glory and honour to a Crystal Palace. I think mixing cider, red wine and Baileys plays havoc with the imagination!!

Now the storm has settled, and a decent sleep, reflection says well done Macclesfield, you did it for McLeod, the chap who died on M1, this is way bigger than football, and big up to Smethurst, just heard him on TalkSPORT, no gloating as you’d expect, pretty humble I’d say. Don’t know where the heck Macclesfield is but I’m gonna start looking out for their results, and wish them great success.

Glasner made a big mistake in not starting his strangest eleven and then get a two goal lead and then bring on the usual non starters and youngsters. Only four out of yesterday's starting eleven were regular starters. That meant that 7 of the 11 would not normally start. So it was not really that surprising that we lost as that team had never played together
Not using that as an excuse for them though as a team of fully professional footballers should be able to beat a team of part timers six leagues below them.
So in conclusion I think that Glasner completely underestimated Macclesfield with his selection
Because as he said post match Palace should have been able to score a lot of goals against a non league team, and I think they would have done if as I said he had started the game with his strongest team.

Should read strongest eleven not strangest above. Although come to think of it ,it was a strange selection.

We are lacking a player in the final third to drop a shoulder, sit a defender on his backside and create / score (think Olise/Eze/ Saha).
Sarr can burst past a player, and Johnson may be able to do that too, but that can be negated with a low block or defenders doubling up.
Pino can sidestep a player, but not comprehensively beat him allowing the player to recover and outmuscle him.

It was noteworthy that Glasner referred to the absence of a 'dribbler' yesterday.
This may come a surprise to those who suspect that the art of dribbling is anathema to Glasner with his meticulous organisation and strict team structure.
Not that this was present yesterday.

The mistake for me is constantly trying to find someone to play right wing back when there's absolutely no obligation to play with wingbacks at all. We have myriad central midfielders. We could've played a flat back four (suiting the available players better) and bolstered the midfield better to control play.

Richards looks solid only when he has Munoz and Lacroix either side of him as protection. He'd never be good enough to play in a back four. He was shocking for their second goal, but where was the right back at the time? PS I'm not making him a scapegoat – everyone was a disgrace.

Sosa followed their winger into the melee on the left of the goal but simply lost him. Wharton decided to leave Kay in the middle of the goal and join in the melee. We had 6 players failing to get the ball from 2 players in the end they had 2 free players in front of Benitez.

I had the sense of doom as soon as Wharton left Kay.

Its worth a watch.

I disagree. We are supposedly professional.
We had a team full of internationals. Inexcusable

That has confused me too especially as the manager has said that he prefers playing a back four and just came up with that formation based on the players that we had.

There has been times this season especially against Everton and Arsenal away when I feel he should’ve put another player in midfield when we were losing that battle and gone to Sarr or Nketiah playing off of Mateta.

He's doing an Amorim. If United hire him now the board need to give their heads a wobble!

I should add, my anti Glasner rhetoric is just because I don't think he's off the hook for some of the blame. Yes, some big name players under performed and the board's signing of players has been too tight, but Glasner isn't blameless.

I still love him for winning us trophies and giving us something we thought we'd never see, I just don't think he is blameless in this run of results.

And if it's true that he's stringing us out over signing a contract...I am starting to get less bothered about him staying. Would love if he did, but his parting is becoming more bearable.

No. I don't buy any of the excuses about players not being played in the right positions. They are highly paid premier league footballers. Are you telling me a player who is normally a defender can't play in midfield? Chris Coleman used to play wherever he was told to play for us and James Milner used to do it throughout his career at every club he played at. I doubt a Macclesfield player would complain about it. It isn't as if we had JPM at right back. Chris Richards is an international!
I do blame the players 100%. Its the worst defeat in living memory and the players should be ashamed of themselves.
I don't know how they are going to get into the right mindset for the away game at Sunderland. I think they are unbeaten at home and will be seeing us a a wounded animal wating to be be put out of our misery.
beware of the wounded animal they bite back , lots of teams that have had bad losses have suddenly turned up next game and got a result , you just ask yourself were was this team last week , I have never heard so many meltdowns over a defeat , its the FA Cup it happens

We never forced the goalkeeper into a save in the first half and we were playing a team 117 places below us in the 'Pyramid'.
In general, our lack of goal threat in recent weeks is a real cause for concern. We would not have scored 6 against Shrewsbury or 5 against Millwall, feats achieved by relegation candidates Wolves and Burnley.
Apropos our formation, most teams in the PL deploy a back four, Amorim persisted with his trusted back three and we all know how that turned out.
