FA Cup 3rd Round Macclesfield

The mistake for me is constantly trying to find someone to play right wing back when there's absolutely no obligation to play with wingbacks at all. We have myriad central midfielders. We could've played a flat back four (suiting the available players better) and bolstered the midfield better to control play.

It seems to be a thing with modern managers they have their system and won't budge, Frank at Spuds, Postecoglu at Spuds, Amorin at Utd
Clyne would be fine at RB

I do remember him saying his preference is 433.

Totally agree, it was obvious our two midfielders couldn't cope with their four or five. It was always three on two or four on two in central midfield. That, and our wingbacks pushing up, allowed them to break. Our midfielders were under pressure the whole game. Probably encapsulated by how poor Wharton was and later Hughes chasing shadows. That was on Glasner, nobody else. You do have to change for the opposition, even if it's just tweaking.

Finding fault in systems individual players or the mangers, coaching staff is fun for some, for me its pointless as I'm no expert. Its a failure of management n player. Right now they an us are feeling it. Take it on the chin. Sunderland away next saturday. need to stick together

Glasner's whole game is based on this fallacy. In reality you need players who know the position inside out for it to work efficiently. Glasner doesn't have that luxury, but being stubborn and having no other plan he shoehorns players into roles they are incapable of fulfilling.
Teams have now found an effective way of countering our set-up, can Glasner find a different mode of operation? I have my doubts.

We are lacking a player in the final third to drop a shoulder, sit a defender on his backside and create / score (think Olise/Eze/ Saha).
Sarr can burst past a player, and Johnson may be able to do that too, but that can be negated with a low block or defenders doubling up.
Pino can sidestep a player, but not comprehensively beat him allowing the player to recover and outmuscle him.

It was noteworthy that Glasner referred to the absence of a 'dribbler' yesterday.
This may come a surprise to those who suspect that the art of dribbling is anathema to Glasner with his meticulous organisation and strict team structure.
Not that this was present yesterday.
Also a surprise given OG hooks players who show any attempt to dribble or try something different

At the end of the day, Glasner simply didn't put a strong enough team out to deal with what was always at the very least going to be a right old battle against a lower league team totally up for it.
I watched all the other matches last night with Premier League teams playing with pretty well full sides in matches they desperately wanted to win in what we all know is the greatest domestic cup competition on the planet.
Through our actions, we actually disrespected the very competition that gave us our greatest triumph.

No. I don't buy any of the excuses about players not being played in the right positions. They are highly paid premier league footballers. Are you telling me a player who is normally a defender can't play in midfield? Chris Coleman used to play wherever he was told to play for us and James Milner used to do it throughout his career at every club he played at. I doubt a Macclesfield player would complain about it. It isn't as if we had JPM at right back. Chris Richards is an international!
I do blame the players 100%. Its the worst defeat in living memory and the players should be ashamed of themselves.
I don't know how they are going to get into the right mindset for the away game at Sunderland. I think they are unbeaten at home and will be seeing us a a wounded animal wating to be be put out of our misery.
Indeed. Much as a detest them remember the Champions Legaue final in 1999. Man Utd missed key players especially in midfield but others stepped up and filled the gap playing out of position. Now I am not saying we are anything like a team that won the Champions League but I am saying there is no excuse for a centre half playing, err, centre half. Maybe if we were playing a top Premier League team yes. But against semi pros? Players need to do their job and yesterday they simply didn’t

Pino is obviously a decent footballer as he is usually seleced to play for Spain. I liked what I saw when he first time came on at Villa Park, but thereafter he has become worse. Is OG playing him in a wrong position? All right, he scored a good goal with his free kick, but other than that - keep running around, make silly mistakes and hardly find a team mate with his pass. Still, OG keep him on the pitch...how come?

If you set up wrong and the opposition sets up right, do you not think that might affect the outcome?

The more I look at Pino the more I struggle to see how he fits anywhere in OG’s system. As you say the guy clearly isn’t a donkey but he’s been poor and ineffective for us. Looks to me like he’s either an out and out winger or should be playing in the pocket behind a front two. Neither of those are options for us. Our game under OG is all about transition with pace and strength in behind while playing off JPM. Look at our Cup Final winner for the absolute prime example. Pino just doesn’t fit that in any way

Pino has flattered to deceive at our club.
Flashes of significance on an intermittent basis but has periods when he disappoints and has no impact on the game.
His left foot must really be a 'Swinger'. In the first half in particular he should have used his left foot to shoot but opted to use his stronger foot and the ball went past the post. On another occasion he could have crossed with his left foot but cut back on to his right.
He did score from a creditable free kick but overall, as has been the case this season, he was disappointing.

I reached the same conclusion about Pino and his position.
It's clear that he has talent, but he's not demonstrating it in current position and in the current team structure.
He loses around 80% of his duels as he's pounced on by a combination of opposition players.
He seems unable to go past players on the outside to cut the ball back, and is blocked when he cuts inside.
He looks careless in possession with a combination of overhit/underhit passes.
To me he looks like he needs to drift in the final third, find pockets of space where he can hurt the opposition.
However, we don't play that way.

Which all rather begs the question of why OG keeps picking him doesn’t it? I get it at the moment given the absentees but even then surely he can see it just doesn’t work.

The fact we’ve scored something like one goal from open play in the last month should tell OG that the attack simply isn’t functioning.

Only 2 goals in our last 6 PL games and only 1 of those was from 'Open Play'.

I read all the comments about players, square pegs/round holes but at the end of the day our starting 11 contained 7 who regularly feature in international squads, and further supplemented by Messrs Johnson and even Mitchell if 1 cap is counted. There really is no excuse for such a shameful performance. This combined with a trainer who stated that for such matches "you don't need a trainer or tactics" suggests an unhealthy arrogance.

Mateta, is our recognised goal getter off the boil. Sarr, is in Africa, Munoz, injured. Nktetia, injured. Guehi, gets one or two. Eze, has gone. Outside of them goals from anywhere else are rare . Most teams get a percentage of goals from their mid field, ours couldn’t hit a barn door, and right now we pay a price for that.

Mateta, Sarr and Munoz are our top 3 goalscorers.
Mateta has scored 2 in his last 15 games, 1 of which was a penalty.
Sarr has scored 4 in his last 10 games with 2 being against a much changed Liverpool team in the Carabao cup.
Munoz has scored 2 in his last 10 games.
