Crystal Palace vs. Manchester City match thread

How can we compete with city now? they’re spending over £100 million per player these days and we’re bringing in freebies, loans and selling our best players
But I knew it would be a disjointed start with all the turnover of players, others wanting out, new gaffer, players drifting back from the World Cup. thankfully we won’t have to play city every week.

no panic, see where we’re at once the window shuts, sage has more of an idea what his best team is and we’ve played a few winnable games……..then maybe we can panic if we haven’t got a win on the board 🤣

It has only been a miniscule 1,299 days since Manchester City was formally charged by the Premier League and only 630 days since the Independent panel concluded.

Everyone is always in a rush, Rome wasn't built in a day. Just because they threw Everton and Forest under the bus you cannot expect them to treat the Vice President and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates the same as mere mortals!

This City team doesn't look great either we made them look far better then they currently are because they are in a rebuild with new manager.

Without doubt. Hughes plays today alongside Wharton and perhaps we only lose that game 2-1. No one will convince me otherwise.

It’s not just the added defensive solidity - it’s the standards and leadership. Players need shouting at to do their jobs and Hughes is about the only player who’d hold others to account.
 
The next morning and my take.

This was always going to be a tough start. All the main bodies late back to training and no pre-season as a group. Want away and unsettled players (at least 3 and all main stays of the team) not exactly helping. A bunch of lower grade replacements trying to find there feet (whoever called him Jorgon Grand Larceny… I tip my hat to you that is genius) again not helping and finally a manager none of us know anything about really and cannot be judged after our bogey team away and mega money city as our first 2 games. Come Fulham we will know who is here and who is not. Who was injured and who was not. But it will be settled.

The positives. The fist 15 minutes we looked excellent. There was a team there. Wharton looked class. The new right back looked decent too. Eddie at least moved around and looked interested. Pino, I still maintain there is a player in there… but he loses the ball and flaps his arms and needs that knocked out of him, if he stopped f***ing about trying to be clever and just did it simple, he would be great.

The negatives, I don’t understand what Gussand and McNeil are supposed to bring to this team? Grand Larceny all the mobility of an arthritic donkey. Back three, that is the biggest worry, they looked like strangers and really not very good at all. Love Richards but he is not the central defender you built the back 3 around. As another poster said, he is much better on the right and Canvot better on the left.

My take and this is just my take. Sage gets until end of October before Parish pushes the button. Sage either shapes HIS team or Parish brings in somebody (we all know who) that is pragmatic and secures survival above all else. I think Sage should be given a chance but the premier league is brutal and Parish if nothing else is not slow to make sure we are safe. The simplest thing Sage can do right now is switch to a back 4 and put hughes in the middle of the park with Wharton and Kamada. We are not going to outscore a team and we are going to struggle to keep clean sheets unless new signings come in that change that, at the very least we need to compete and giving the midfield some bite is the easiest fix.

My prediction. Too much money is at stake, Parish will not give Sage long. The new stadium and Palace in the premier league is what matters to him and the investors (sorry I mean owners). I am not saying it’s right but history proves that when the chips are down Parish will turn to a Moyes, Hodgson… Dyche type because they take us back to basics. I hope I’m wrong and Sage turns it round. The test actually starts next week with a settled squad and a run of games we should be getting points from. If at the end of those games after playing both Forest and the weed we are bottom 3 I think Sage’s fate might be sealed which is a shame.

Good post. My take is simple: This current side has to find its character - the classic "who am I?" question.
Sage wants to implement his system but what is it? I'm seeing 3 at the back, a lame system that weakens the midfield, a midfield through which City poured with ease in the second half - no wonder the back 3 were under constant pressure, they had nothing in front of them!
Calling out individuals, up front Nketiah and Pino at least run round like headless chickens but Strand Larsen, this guy is a huge disappointment, he contributes next to nothing, doesn't hold the ball up, doesn't press, slow, and lacking movement.
Two games in, a rash of cheapo hit and hope signings, and a lack of identity on the pitch, the signs are that Mr Sage will have his work cut out. The next 3 games will be telling.
 
Watched the highlights,we should have been 3-2 up at half time. To go in at half time 0-1 down was not a true reflection of that first half. Second half was a different story and Man City deserved the points.

How Pinos free kick was deemed an own goal beggers belief the keeper was beaten all ends up and then we had a chance to make it 2-2. Look it’s not the start we wanted, but I have seen enough last night to suggest once that bloody window shuts we will get our first win and get up the table………

This is a pattern that established itself during Glasner's final season. One could say we are at least consistent in this regard. The fact is that by the second half the opposition has made the necessary adjustments, Palace players look increasingly spent and substitutions have little to no effect.
 
Reading some of these comments has calmed me down a bit. Yes we're undercooked for the start of the season not helped by the apparent 'want aways'.
I was underwhelmed by the signing of Tomiyasu but thought he did well. Canvot better on the left yes. Richards no good in the middle yes. So hopefully Disasi can fill that roll and secure our defence.
I think the theme of downgrade replacements is spot on. McNeil looked awful and Guessand has taken over Johnson's hiding role. Nketiah was lively but has a poor first touch.
We need a captain on the field. I don't go with the goalkeeper theory. Hughes is the obvious choice but unless you're looking to drop Wharton or Kamada that requires a change in formation.
Still unconvinced by Sage, but here's hoping this gets rammed down my throat later in the season.

Despite the doom I think there were a bunch of positives. Without Haarland they dont win that game.

We played much more on the front foot, pressing high and trying not to give City time. It looked great for the first 15 mins, their goal took the wind out of our sales.

Khalaili looked great, could beat a man and willing to stick crosses in. Combined well with Pino too in the first half. Forward line need to be alive to his deep cross to the near post. Donnarumma collected 3 in quick succession but I think that was more lack of movement (maybe as Evan was on at that point)

Nketiah looked lively, there certainly is a player there. JSL tried to put himself about a little more. Still not on Mateta's level, but Mateta took a while to add that physicality to his game.

Gozo looked v raw, but very energetic. Hopefully he gets a start in the cup. Will be interesting to see what he can do.

But on the negative,

Pino's first touch....for a player who clearly is technically good, often his first touch is absolutely terrible.

Richards didn't jump for Haaland's first, wasn't tight enough for his 2nd. He looks off it. It looked like Tomiyasu pulled a hammy, which is a shame as he looked decent. I would have brought Diasi in for Richards, but I suspect it will now be Richards - Diasi - Canvot.

Agree about those positives identified.

I thought those crosses to Khalaili were clever balls in, but without movement in the box to attack the ball they unfairly look aimless.
I could see Mateta, Nketiah or even a breaking midfielder getting on the end of them if Sage does tweak the system.

I think it will be Richards, Disasi and Canvot as the back 3, and Sage seemed to adapt this way once Disasi came in.
Of course if we bring in another centre back that could change again.
I also thought Tomiyasu put in a sound performance.

The massive negative for me continues to be Larsen.
I just can’t see it.
Frequently on his heels, seems to spend much of the game chasing after centre backs but yards away from them , barged off the ball by much smaller players and wayward in his link up play.
I’m told his strength is heading but he has missed 2 presentable heading chances in the two games played so far.
I would prefer Nketiah in the middle in Mateta’s absence as at least he looks sharp and lively and has better movement around the box.

Nketiah couldn’t look any less interested in playing, a number of times he showed no tenacity or willingness to get to a ball or make a challenge. You might be trying to put a positive spin but let’s be honest.

100% this... My worry is that losing is a habit and by the time we are up and running (if we get up and running) we'll be settled down amongst the dead men 🙁
 
Humiliating, abject and deeply concerning with some dire individual performances, step forward messrs Strand Larsen, Pino, and to a lesser extent Nketiah and Richards.

I have consistently opined that Richards has a weakness when the ball is delivered from wide and once again he was cruelly exposed when Harland headed the opener.I fully appreciate that Harland poses a real challenge in these situations but Richards never even jumped and his part in the goal was an embarrassment. In the second half he made an utter mess of a ball delivered in from a free kick, somehow managing to mis-time his jump and the ball hit him on the shoulder. He has shown such culpability in defensive and offensive situations and last night his performance was well below what is required.
Substitutes McNeil and Guessand had no impact whatsoever and I am not enamoured by either signing.
Strand Larsen is total excreta and I could attach a moniker referencing an animal that brays.Pino was the Pino we witnessed in many games last season.
I accept that we were playing Man C but a 4-1 defeat at home and the overall performance brought out the splenetic worst in me.I rang me dear wife just before departing and her words were "Calm down dear you will give yourself a heart attack".
I appreciate we have only played 2 games but when I consider the 'Big picture' of players who have departed/will be departing and our transfer activity my view is that we are well and truly in the 'Merde'.
Finally it would be refreshing to witness some enthusiasm from the manager, his dour demeanour does not fill me with confidence that he could rally the 'troops' when this is required.I thought the same about De Boer and we all know the outcome !

One can imagine Parish being fully prepared for the new season secure in the knowledge that his manager had given him ample notice that he was leaving never to return and that most of the players would play some part in the World Cup and that there may be other clubs interested in his players and that having no money to spend because it had all been spent on dross like Johnson and Strand Larsen therefore necessitating the sale of the best central defender to raise funds for further cheapskate purchases to keep the circus plates spinning just one more time until Roy picks up the phone

I am in agreement whilst adding his deployment reminded me of the phrase "Square peg in a round hole".
I am deeply concerned about our attacking prowess, Mateta is out for a month and whilst his missed chances have been highlighted he represents our best option in attack. The less said about JSL,Nketiah and Guessand the better.We really need strengthening in this area.
