I appreciate we have only played 2 games but when I consider the 'Big picture' of players who have departed/will be departing and our transfer activity my view is that we are well and truly in the 'Merde'.
Finally it would be refreshing to witness some enthusiasm from the manager, his dour demeanour does not fill me with confidence that he could rally the 'troops' when this is required.I thought the same about De Boer and we all know the outcome !

This is very strong by your standards and I don't think you can expect an invitation to the Director's area for the Ipswich home game.

Hughes is nowhere near good enough to start week in, week out. We've been crying out for a new centre midfielder.

We needed 2 centre halves (at least), a centre mid, an attacking mid and a striker. And to move on Mateta as quickly as possible.

So what did we do? We got Disasi far too late in the summer, Tomiyasu is too often injured to trust it won't happen again, we have no quality attacking mid come in - McNeil and Guessand are backups (at best) - and we have no centre mid or striker in. And Mateta is still here and worth about £5m now.

Recruitment has been terrible. We needed quality. We lost Lacroix (our only voice at the back) and have not improved our first XI in any way.

We had a lot of players at the World Cup and we had a very small pool of players to start with is my take on it. Take Wharton for instance, he wasn’t taken to the World Cup and has done all the pre season and he looks bang on it!
 
A lot is said about good teams having a spine, through keeper, centre half, midfield, and forward. It's very noticeable that this Palace side in its current format doesn't have one.

Total bollocks. He was just about POTY a couple of seasons ago until OG insisted on playing Kamada every time. I actually agree, we need an upgrade and a real engine box to box type beside Wharton, but to say Hughes is nowhere near good enough is not only disrespectful but plainly wrong.
 
Extended highlights (well, lowlights more like) studied and I can understand what some comments here and in the media are saying; the good phases were again very good but lacked a finish whilst the poor phases apart from being too frequent, were really poor. What is the preferred system for Sage? I assume that from Lens, so more of the same i.e. 3/5 at the back with 2 midfield. For all of Wharton's class last night and Kamada ball recovery and effort, this imho won't work. Not without regular effctive subs once they tire &/or, a robust defence. Which leads to the next issue, that being personnel. Of course the replacements signed are lower grade initially. As indeed were Guehi & Lacroix. When they joined I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. I actually think that Tomiyasu is a good player and his Arsenal and Japan career back that up, but will he stay fit? Did he come off injured?? Now there is Desasi and apparantly we are still scouring the world for another but these players will of course wait until the last minute before committing to CP while they or their agents wait for a bigger club to offer them a place on the bench.
So tactically the team has to get that interaction between midfield and defence because we were far to open yesterday.
Then, well the attacking part. I agree that Nkhetia looked active.........for 20 minutes and then 5 minutes at the beginning of the second half but other than that is it just an illusion but he is not a presence. As for his finishing, enough siad. JSL, such a lightweight, but, good with meeting crosses and we don't provide these often enough because we don't play wingers (McNeil out of position a la Johnson). So even when Wharton, and Wharton alone, can make a decisive pass, there is no end product and i don't see Mateta or Sarr as the answer because their league combimed total last year wasn't good enough.
Summary: I'm worried, as I have been since December last year. I am hopeful that the defence side can be sorted but without goals from midfield & attack we will struggle to beat any team. I'm not saying that we can't win matches but it will always be a hard slog.

A depressing summary even by your standards Willo! Maybe throw in the odd positive- our new right back looked a decent purchase and 10 years younger than Monoz who seems to have shot his bolt last season.
The last 2 games were no surprise. We outplayed Everton but our strikers always fail to achieve their xG. Citeh outclassed us and once our starting eleven tired we were overrun by Cherki and Foden.
As I see it there are 3 contributing factors to our current predicament. Firstly we have a new manager who is trying to sort out a team late in the day because most of them were late back from the World Cup.That takes time. Secondly because we are in Europe our PSR requirements limit our ability to spend the required amount on new players. It’s not a level playing field as it is because of our relative income but we have both hands tied behind our back by the 85% PSR. Thirdly our DoF spent badly in January and seems to favour overpriced players from Europe over homegrown talent. I’m not convinced by him and he’s certainly no Dougie as Clinton pointed out last night.
It’s going to be a long hard season for us but I believe this manager will come good given time. He doesn’t have the charm of Glasner perhaps nor is he bitching about the board not supporting him but once he finds his feet and his team we will be fine.

Well scripted !
Open, very Open between mid & defense & across the middle portion.
Richards was definitely found lacking & not commanding.
It was young Wharton who had to on many occasions explain to the defense on what was required.

I’m sure Adam will be vocal at Copers Cope after they all watch the low & high lights of positional play, lack lustre defending , bit calamitous too.

Mids; before Pinos free kick I was hoping he was going to be subbed in 53 min , he was trying at times but it wasn’t working.

Then the Attacks , I find it hard to see Eddie & Jorgen breaking down top 6 - Eddie just struggled to get past his marker ended up holding up & looking for pass backs or waiting for support,whilst JSL was always double marked throught out they had him mapped.

Crosses: being Corner or a cross - we had plenty yet only 2 connected - Ty on his own & JSL yet offside.

It was an entertaining game , we created more then in the FA Cup final

Yet all in all as punters remarked we still seem to have the lowest recruitment in league.So yet it’s a hard season so buckle up. Unless we get a Striker who runs with speed & strikes

I had in my mind Taiwo Awoniyi whom Coventry have signed for £9 Mill.
Physically strong and uses his strength to take on players.

Morning Holmesdale’s Crew

Like many of you, I went to the game yesterday, wasn’t quite sure if we would win, but expecting a good battle. Excited to see Sage football.

Selhurst - we definitely noticed the change in atmosphere. It was strange not to have the beating drum, megaphone Mike (as my kids call him). Love or loath them, the change was noticeable and City fans were the only ones we could hear!

We don’t sit far from Parish, and as the game unfolded, his ‘bronzed’ smiles turned to frowns. He was in deep discussions with Mr Bright! God only knows what he was thinking

As for the match, everything has been said. We are all disappointed with what happened (though reminded by my son it was Man City). After the match, the main topic was leadership on the pitch, or should I say lack of!

If we buy only one more player - we need a leader on the pitch.

Okay, got all the above off my chest - I may sleep better tonight. Apologies, this is not supposed to sound like a moan, but YOU are the only people that understand and I talk about Palace matters to 😂
