Hughes had one good season, surrounded by better players, patrolling his allotted space of turf. Since then he's behind the game most of the time, fouling to keep up as opposition players waltz past him. It's not really a surprise that Sage hasn't used him so far.

That's all we should need if we're so Premier League and the rest are weaker teams. I do get your point but our fringe players should be first teamers for most of our opposition. Really, every team has a pre season and the pre season issues. We quite clearly needed to recall our players more quickly. At least half barely played the world Cup and just had a Jolly frankly. We could have brought them back and rested them during the cup weeks etc. We don't think out side the box, we don't think even in the box.

Do you think everyone just brought back their players a week or two ago? I know full well teams like Liverpool, Arsenal and Man Utd didn't in the main. They expect more from their players. We should be emulating them for best practice. Henderson and Pino played what - 1 game? Munoz needed rest - he always does. He's a Columbia player more than a Palace one recently. Now Forest can look forward to him not even being able to stand up after an international break.

We very clearly need better sports science and physios and, most of all, proper, real rotation options - particularly for Wharton and Kamada. Neither are the best physical specimens. Both are very technical players.

I'm not sure he had worked with the team at all. And it was at home against the worst team in the league, Burnley, who had a man sent off early. Franca looked lively, I recall. We didn't start winning until Olise was back from injury and showing Bayern what they were getting
 
What we lacked last night was a leader. I love Deano, but no goalkeeper should be the match day captain. It requires a defender or midfielder to get around the team and rally them.

The other thing that disappointed me the most was that we had no bite in the team. As soon as Cherki got into his flow, we needed a player to hit him hard. Watford used to boast about their rotational fouling of Zaha. Neither Wharton or Kamada have that in their game. Wharton gets yellows but more from mistimed tackles. We stood of them far too much and gave them the time to walk through the team. We desperately need a Hughes type player in the middle to get into them.

Evidently on television Cherki was receiving adulation for the close-range goal he scored.
To my mind, it was poor defending with 3 players surrounding him not making a challenge.
I accept he is adept in those situations, however neither Tomiyasu,Canvot or Richards thwarted him.

You're right. We seem to need another body in midfield really. As we always get overrun there, or the ball goes in behind the wing back. That's our two problems tactically. I really think we should go 4-3-3 or even 5-3-2 if they really, really have to have a back three.

Think about this: out of possession we supposedly have 7-9 men back. Is that helping? Because we're conceding easily. We can't exactly be accused of scoring either. Surely something has to give.

Personally don't care if it's a pretty perfomrmance, I'll take a gritty performance and some points.

Also he poked it not controlled hit and it went in , you know hit and hope , so yes defenders are 90% to blame

Canvot tried but was wary about giving away a penalty.

Can be fatal to challenge someone as clever as Cherki, in the box. Dont let him carry into the box, don’t worry about the ball foul him outside. The space he got for his second was suicidal, but by then we were already nowhere near competitive enough . They completely dominated all competition for the ball in most of the second half. Held up against them we didnt look fit. The defending wasnt good but they dominated us from front to back bringing constant pressure .

What's going on with Doucoure?! If we can get him back to his best I feel it kind of solves the midfield problem (although I'd still love us to sign Danois). It's such early doors, we can't read too much into things. If we can keep Sarr and Mateta I'm sure we'll be fine.

Doucoure has been playing with the under 21s I think. He is still months away from being ready for consideration. Realistically we aren’t going to see him before Xmas if at all this season. Thats if he can get back to the required level which is no guarantee. We can’t rely on him to solve our midfield issues
 
Only a brief appearance but Mingueza seemed a "heads up" and confident sort of player - could he take over as captain at some stage? Accepting he needs to establish himself in the team first of course.
 
I would hope that as the season progresses we wouldn't have to be featuring Nketiah in a number 10 role (which clearly didn't work under Glasner), Guessand as a central striker ( where he has been used by Sage) or McNeil in a right sided number 10 role (where he's like a fish out of water).

To an extent the deployment of these players in roles to which they are not suited have been prompted and made in the absence of Sarr and Mateta, but it is to be hoped that we will soon see the end of the need for these fish out of water selections once the squad settles.

I hope we bring in more pace in the final third before the window closes, which will be even more essential if Sarr departs.
