Crystal Palace vs. Manchester City match thread

Tonight we should remember that the back three were misaligned: Richards is best on the right of the back three, Canvot is better on the left. The way I see it, once those two have returned to their best positions with Disasi in the middle, the shape will be much more balanced.

I thought Tomi looks a class act, Khalaili too.

Up front Jorgen Grand - Larceny is, simply, poor. He shows no urgency when off the ball and on it he has the vitality of a dumpling: most of the time he's walking around doing nothing. Get rid and put Nketiah up front; he's far more lively and with a much better eye for goal.

I like Yeremy: yes he can be wasteful but I love his drive and the way he's adapting to the physical side of things. Inventive even though slack at times.

Despite the result, I'm not downhearted by any means.

I need a pint of whatever you’re drinking #1!

I know I will be slat d for saying this, and no I didn’t watch, it some the criticism of SP/the club is the same as media comments that „Palace sold their best players“. Like it was conscious decision. Players were either tapped-up by money-bag outfits determined that the status quo will not be disturbed by any smaller club with ambitions above their station, decided to move on or currently going on strike. The whole situation pi??es me off.
Also, Sage may not have top-flight experience it just me to mention a few did Le Regis or Huntzler ( the Brighton guy).

Richards never looks good in middle of a back 3.
Agreed, until we sort out the back 3 we are in huge trouble. Hopefully a signing or two before the window closes. Thought initial subs made were okay but then Gozo and the other new Spanish signing coming on made things worse. Needed Hughes on to battle in midfield. Not sure why that didn’t happen. Thought we did okay first half even with defence looking shaky and missed a couple of chances that should have been put away. City were always going to punish us for our missed chances. Then of course our bad defending at beginning of second half wrapped it up. You have to be tight against the best sides, take your few chances and have a strong defence. Sadly we presently aren’t good enough. Let’s hope that changes in the coming weeks or we will have a mountain to climb and perhaps a new manager coming in? Squad may be stronger but first 11 is so much weaker at the moment :-(

And how many games did Glasner and Ireaola need to start being successful in the prem? Bedwetters central this is.
Agree. Not the best start but we won the FA Cup having been bottom 3 in the end of November. Glasner took time to develop his style and message, and the second half of the season saw us soar.
Hopefully Sage can do similar. What is clear is the defence without a main centre back leader is wide open and a critical issue. The next few days Parish must splash on a top centre back leader like Guehi and then Lacroix were.

At least we have those two games out of the way early! Felt like a pre season game with all the new changes.

Fulham and Ipswich I'm sure will be different!
Really missed LaCroix at the back. It was glaring!

Both bought as inexperienced kids rather than top centre backs.

I believe Disasi has been loaned to take on that role. He's a strong, physical, dominating type and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does.

Most on here expected to lose both opening games, partly for historical reasons as we always lose to Everton and City, and partly because of the disruption of the pre season.

My take outs are that we can’t continue with Nketiah in the number 10 role , as willing as he is.
He has to be played more centrally in and around the box if he’s to play at all.

The central role does not suit Richards in the back 3.

Guessand is not a central striker.

McNeil is not a right sided number 10.

Pino is a good player, but I’m not sure if he’s suited to the current system ,or worst case scenario, even the Premier League.

If Sarr and Mateta do depart we are going to need to find some pace and power from somewhere to threaten the opposition.

Interesting post match discussions on Sky. Sage said the subs he brought on were to replace tiring players but showed less energy. They certainly didn’t press as much as those they replaced. Meanwhile Clinton was asked why recruitment was always late at Palace. He quite pointedly said we haven’t replaced Dougie. Also suggested the signings we made so far weren’t quality. The funniest post match interview was Cherki being asked if this was his best performance. He replied “Mo. I was s*** in the first half” . Haaland nearly wet himself.

We have 1-6 with a pretty even xG to the oppostion if you count both games. Some say it evens out during the season. I still think it is to be lucky in the games that really matters.

So this is my idea of us just having 10xG and scoring 25 goals in the EL.

I didn’t see it as I was on my way home from the game, but thanks, that’s cheered me up a bit🤣
