Crystal Palace vs. Ipswich match thread

Delap would be a good signing for us if Ipswich go down. Despite wanting Nketiah to do well I just don’t think he suits our style of play and we look pretty weak up front.
OG apparently likes to play with a big man up front so JPM or another like him is his preferred striker.

The team was poor yesterday and all we did was lump the ball to Eddie he was only given one decent chance and that was right at the start of the game.

They need to work on bringing him into the game more.

Eddie rounds the keeper and slots home early doors we would have won comfortably yesterday, it was a bit like the fixture at Portman road in December. We had a couple of those one on ones with the keeper and it took JP’s cool head ( that head gets brought up again) to take the points.

You have got to say Sarr’s dart into the box and finish was sublime, for 12 million he looks like a steal now. He was always a handful when he played for Watford!

I never really rated Sarr at Watford. An inconsistent player that Glasner has installed consistency into. £12m is a steal with what he's made of him, the guy is a total pain in the arse and danger, works really hard and he can score goals.

Anyone know the contract situation with JP?

A few observations;

I thought the referee had a poor game and as has already been mentioned, failed to blow for at least two very obvious fouls on our players that then led to good chances for Ipswich. He booked Greaves in the first half but failed to produce a second yellow in the second half for another bad foul and you could tell that he was taking into account it was Greaves and that any other Ipswich player would’ve been shown the card.

Nketiah looks to be the type of player that needs 5 chances to score one and I think we’ve massively overpaid for him, although thankfully not quite at the level of Sheffield Utd with Rhian Brewster. However it is still early days and I’m hoping he shows an upturn in form like with JPM.

We missed Hughesy and this impacted us more so with Lerma having an off day.

Richards looks to be making the right side of the back three his own and Henderson was superb in goal (my MOTM). Eze was sadly quite poor and ineffective again. A bit of a concern that in a home game against a bottom three side we aren’t giving Esse & Franca more than a combined total of 3 minutes on the pitch! Is OG really seeing so little on the training ground from those two that he feels they have nothing to offer?

Sarr played well and his goal was superbly taken.

Ipswich received great support from their fans and it will be a shame to see them go down however they had no real stand out players on the day and as has so often been the case for them this season - they played ok and competed well in a tight game but still lost. Phillips signing for Man City has made him very rich but ruined him on the pitch.

What’s more he seems to have nailed down that position on the right and is always in the starting 11!

I think the problem is that to bring him into the game more we’d have to change our system and OG doesn’t want to do that, certainly not to accommodate one player. Our passing was poor yesterday but it often is and JPM spends most of his time working off scraps. He has the physical presence to do that and Nketiah doesn’t. The other thing JPM does is carry the ball and run at the opposition. Creates something from not a lot. Again that isn’t Nketiah’s game. He’s a poacher really.

For the second week running, Palace were coerced into playing like it was a Championship game.

Give Ipswich some credit, they are physical and pretty uncomplicated which can make life difficult for the opposition. But if Palace had been firing on all cylinders then a more comfortable win would surely have ensued.

Eddie really needed to have tucked that early chance away. His confidence gradually drained before he was subbed. And his look and body language at the end told its own story.

Whartons passing was a little off yesterday, Lerma had a day to forget and apart from two deflected shots, Eze was back to rarely affecting the game.

A mid season break looks like being just what the doctor ordered. Hopefully the squad will come back refreshed, ready for the remaining games.

Not so sure about that. I maybe wrong but we never seem to do well after a long break?

Awful game yesterday.

We missed Hughes and Mateta.

Kamada was his usual useless self when he came on, and Eze really needs to improve his finishing.

Another 3 points just the same and an outside chance of Europe if anyone thinks that's a good idea with our flimsy squad.

The Cup is the only realistic ambition now. If we can't win it this season, will we ever win it?

Also I think it's based on the number and quality of the chances created i the game. In other words, we fluffed a few very good chances (Nketiah and Munoz spring to mind).
Might be being too kind to him but I thought Nketiah failing to take his chance was as much down to good goalkeeping as him missing. Palmer came out quickly to close down the space. Or he needs to work with Sarr on lifting the ball.

If you can watch an unenjoyable win, that was it.

Kamada blindsided the Ipswich defence with his deliberate loss of the ball in build up to the goal.

Henderson again very important.

Delap was really good for Ipswich, strong and quick, love to have him at Palace.

Lino on dug out side was absolute sh!te, guessed most of the time.

The win is all the matters, although the game was far from inspiring, it was certainly not our best day at the office, the clean sheet was great, our poor passing, especially in midfield and lack of ruthlessness in the final third is still a worry. Ipswich, like us perform better away from home so it was always going to tough with them fighting for their EPL status. The focus now in the press seems to br on players thagt we are may be going to lose over the summer (Guehi, Eze, Wharton and Mateta), which if correct will be a big challenge for DOF Dougie who is hopefully already planning for the worst case outcome, so that we can have a settled team pre season for a change.
I would say Guehi is the only one out of the 4 would be going. Why would we want to sell Wharton, I can’t see him going even if a mega offer comes in. Current estimated value 70 million, could go north of 100 million in another year and I’m sure he is currently on a 5 year contract!

I thought he never looked like scoring, miss hit second touch and took the ball too close to the keeper - at least it shows one thing, his underachievement is not just about how we're set up, it's more to do with his confidence - which seemed to be increasing over the last few games. Mateta thrives on through balls like that, his old reels playing for Mainz show that as well, whereas Nketiah thrived at Arsenal where they enjoyed more goal mouth action in the penalty area. On a day when our link up play is better maybe he needs to get move involved with one-twos and lay offs and more goals will come, and if Chilwell can supply as many crosses as Munoz he'll get more headers, and he's great in the air so that's one change that might help him. I wouldn't be surprised if he starts at Fulham, and Hughes isn't banned for the cup games and his presence will improve our link-up play, we didn't just miss his tackling yesterday but his orchestration of moves.

Expected goals as far as I am aware.
I thought it was based on a number of metrics to crudely assess "quality". Like BMI for weight heath.

Hardly empirical certainty but better than subjective partial observation. Almost every game I watch I think we're sh1t and we're lucky when we win. It is only when I hear trusted experienced commentators gushing over our win usually supported by a vastly superior xG that I know we did OK!

It was good keeping but a top striker should score when one on one with space from any defender.

That's fair. His first touch wasn't great and Hughes has shown there is more to his game than breaking up play.
It feels somehow typical that we've been looking for a poacher type of striker and the one we've ended up with hasn't really been up to it. Yet.

Oh that's what Kamada was doing!
