Crystal Palace are stagnating. Again.

You’re spot on here, it just does get on my nerves every window the same old stuff about the lack of transfers from some fans. As you say, we’ve made some great signings and some have slipped through our fingers possibly because of finances. We’ve also dodged some bullets.

As for the article that started this thread, bringing up players we missed out on in previous years as a stick to beat parish with is about as trash as it gets, I wonder if he writes for the sun?🤣 when we made brilliant signings like Eze, Olise, Munoz, Wharton, LaCroix and Sarr, were we ‘stagnating’ then ?
Some people just like the signing of new players, doesnt really matter to them, if they can improve the team. They will be the same people slagging of the player, if he isnt a superstar and Parish for signing them. An example of Kamada last season, got labelled as useless, Glasner favourite etc, as it took him time to settle into the Premier.

What..... like Ian Holloway did 😱

that turned out well.......

I'm unaware of people asking for indiscriminate buying of Carlos Kickaball and co for the sake of it.

It's a little more focused than that.

For all the club's great transfer business in recent years there have been periods with certain blind spots e.g the lack of competition/ cover for Mitchell in recent seasons until Chilwell joined.

Reading through the messages on this it looks like people would like an additional centre back (Chaloboah was never replaced) and another attacking player who can be used across the front 3 where we appear light taking into account Europe, possible loss of form /injuries, need for rotation/substitutions.
Some would like an additional RWB to cover for Munoz too.
This is 2 or 3 players and doesn’t seem excessive.

The stark fact is that Glasner's reasonable request to get them in sooner rather than later has not been met.
The vast majority on here are disappointed, with some willing to cut the club more slack than others.

Personally I'm resigned to it being another late window now and Glasner will just have to get on with it.

We have a lot of religious players and perhaps they can do a collective prayer for no more injuries.

If this is stagnation then I hope we can stagnate our way to successful European campaign and a top half finish. I remember thinking that they were holding the F.A. Cup in the air for so long that it was starting to stagnate. We've got to keep the bl**dy thing in a trophy cabinet for a whole year which is most stagnant. At least Joel Ward's gone so no more stagnation at right back. And Glasner's hair could do with a make over, how long has he had it like that, that hair style has stagnated for far too long. The only thing truly stagnant about our club is the main stand, and the bogs in the Arthur Wait, where the odour is one of concentrated stagnation.

I agree we could still have a good window and our record on recent transfer windows has been generally excellent.

My issue is the squad is not where it should be on the eve of a new season with the extra demands of Europe.
We're in real danger of having to play catch up again as Glasner has alluded to.

To deny this is almost to pretend that the season doesn't start proper until after the window closes, and the fact that the squad isn't prepared from Day 1 is immaterial.

Some have pointed out, with some validity, that our slow start last season didn't stop an FA Cup win and high points total.

I come at it from a different perspective - if we had bern properly prepared and resourced from Day 1 we could have been pushing for a top 6 finish.

Our results after those early games when we were at last properly resourced, prepared and organised bear this out.
Totally agree..!!

We know that it takes new players time to get used to Glasner's system. So, if we start the season with basically the same first XI, who are all used to it, then we're fine. Any new signings can have time to adjust and bed in without the pressure of hitting the ground running.

However, my concern is that suddenly Eze or Guehi leaves, we sign a panic replacement and it takes the 3 months to adjust.

We need to get better at signing players early and, ideally, getting replacements in before our major stars leave rather than the other way round.
The trouble is and OG alluded to this, we are not the most attractive club for a lot of players, it seems they all want to keep there options open until the last minute in case one of the big guns comes in or we offer silly money which we just won’t do.

I wonder whether our success in recent years in bringing in some excellent players for very reasonable money is working against us in that once the bigger fish learn we have shown interest in a player they want to know more and are able to offer more \and make the catch.

On the wider front, this window is fascinating to me, seeing:
  1. Newcastle desperately trying to become one of the big clubs by going after Big club signings and failing miserably as their targets prefer one the existing big clubs.
  2. Players preferring to go to a big club even though that club has done poorly in recent years and won't even be in Europe next year (no guesses for working out who I'm talking about)
  3. players going to a Big club where they'll have to fight for their place rather than a not so big club where they'd be a guaranteed starter.
We're in a food chain and we have to bide our time until our realistic targets agree to come.

Does European competition at this level make that much difference to a player? Maybe the Champions League but that might be because the teams who regularly compete in it tend to pay the highest wages.
If it's the Europa, I suppose it gives them exposure to a wider range of reasonable clubs if they are looking at Palace as a stepping-stone. But if we make that competition, the probability is that it is a one-off so hardly a clincher
