Crystal Palace are stagnating. Again.

This happens every year. We can't blame mitigating services every year.

Steve, obviously either prefers to wait until late, once other clubs business has fallen into place, or has a policy of low-balling, and someone else steps in and snaps up because they are prepared to pay the extra few million that we weren't. Sometimes it works, but often it doesn't. Don't be surprised with 'we tried but it is difficult' at the end of the window. As I said in another thread I expect another 'can't get on the Chelsea bench loanee' and maybe one other signing both on or around deadline day at maximum. Also expect someone maybe off and won't be replaced as there won't be time. (Liverpool bid £35m for Guehi on deadline day?)

It isn't an ideal policy for starting a season well and last year with the number of ins and outs in the last window was a disaster. I hoped with this, Glasner stating he wanted players in earlier and winning the FA Cup, would change things this year. I expect when the first decent job offer comes Glasner's way, that he will take it.

Those who argue that our first team is the best it's ever been are correct, it's just about 4 injuries in the wrong places and its an entirely different matter.

I would support SP over missing Guessand. Too toppy in my opinion.
The far bigger trick will be holding onto our stars, which he is now in full control of.
We have a sound first team made up from some 16/17 players so if we can dig out a couple more worthwhile bargain bolt ons before the window closes, we should be in a very good place to manage the coming season.

Nobody is blaming mitigating circumstances every year

That's what I mean. This year people are saying its because we're not sure what European competition we are in.

Personally, I think Steve quite likes leaving it late to see if there are any last minute deals to be done.

Reckon we should leave the transfer speculation until the 29th August.

Villa bid 30m because they knew we wouldn't have been able to match that. If we had just agreed on £25 million a bit earlier before Villa even made the bid, we would've had him through the door.

The reason Newcastle were and are stingy over transfers is because of PSR regulations. They absolutely have enough money to bankroll any team in the world into superstardom. As mentioned in the article, we could spend £90 million without any outgoings and still not be in danger of violating them. Newcastle do not have that because of the exorbitant sums of money they spent in their first couple of transfer windows under the Saudis. We do not have that excuse and could've easily closed the gap in valuation before Villa hijacked the deal.

Do you honestly think that things work like that?

What is the benefit to the agent, selling club and player to just push it through quickly and quietly?

You use that offer as a starting point and then try and get more. More wages, more transfer fee, better club etc etc.

Its why transers at mid level clubs are very tricky to do. Unless you are wiling to grossly overpay.

We've signed some great players and of course many duds. I always have the feeling that if we really want a player, we go out and get them.

When we're being quoted as interested in players £25mil+, I'm always doubtful unless it looks a very genuine, targeted effort. There is so much journalistic nonsense and us nonchalantly spending tens of millions on several random players each window is far from realistic for me. Of course, of all the names banded about some will come good and as fans we will rue what could have been but many will also fail and at the end of it all, is it ever a case of 'the one who got away' or another punt that we were loosely associated with coming good when that was never guaranteed? I'd suggest the latter and never dwell on it too long.
You’re spot on here, it just does get on my nerves every window the same old stuff about the lack of transfers from some fans. As you say, we’ve made some great signings and some have slipped through our fingers possibly because of finances. We’ve also dodged some bullets.

As for the article that started this thread, bringing up players we missed out on in previous years as a stick to beat parish with is about as trash as it gets, I wonder if he writes for the sun?🤣 when we made brilliant signings like Eze, Olise, Munoz, Wharton, LaCroix and Sarr, were we ‘stagnating’ then ?

I think there's a lot more to it than just that !

Freedman did a great job, in general. Shame he left and hasn't been replaced

In 2023, Ekitike was refusing to turn up to PSG training because we were interested and he was trying to force a move. We kept lowballing and he went to Frankfurt instead. We were also lowballing Bristol City for Semenyo and Brentford for Watkins. Obviously I did not mean that they were keen THIS transfer window.
I think you're dealing in half-truths. The half that is true is that it seems Ekitike did want to come here (a stepping stone to a bigger PL club in all probability) during that window. The half that isn't, isn't about us lowballing at all. As I recall, we wanted to loan him but PSG wanted a sale and wanted to sell him to Frankfurt despite the player's wishes. For whatever reason (probably PSR given our outgoings in the previous two summers and having already forked out on Franca and Henderson in that window) we weren't willing or more likely able to BUY him.

Does European competition at this level make that much difference to a player? Maybe the Champions League but that might be because the teams who regularly compete in it tend to pay the highest wages.

We know that it takes new players time to get used to Glasner's system. So, if we start the season with basically the same first XI, who are all used to it, then we're fine. Any new signings can have time to adjust and bed in without the pressure of hitting the ground running.

However, my concern is that suddenly Eze or Guehi leaves, we sign a panic replacement and it takes the 3 months to adjust.

We need to get better at signing players early and, ideally, getting replacements in before our major stars leave rather than the other way round.

I agree with all of that.

I just think its the way we do our business. Think SP is quite happy to leave it late and history would suggest that. The squad we have is probably good enough to finish 12th again, providing we don't have a major injury crisis. I was hoping for a little more a little earlier in this transfer window, but looks like i'll be checking my phone at 10 o'clock on deadline day again.
