Crystal Palace are stagnating. Again.

So re Guessand, have I got this right ?

Valued by his club at £25m. We offered £20m

Villa signed him for £30m

So to have landed him would actually have cost Palace £10m more than we wanted to pay.

The article mentions our Board's joint wealth. Meaningless.

How about last summer when Newcastle, with their faux sovereign wealth were nickle and diming us over Marc Guehi ?

I get the general gist but I don't think the author has applied much thought to his work here

Villa bid 30m because they knew we wouldn't have been able to match that. If we had just agreed on £25 million a bit earlier before Villa even made the bid, we would've had him through the door.

The reason Newcastle were and are stingy over transfers is because of PSR regulations. They absolutely have enough money to bankroll any team in the world into superstardom. As mentioned in the article, we could spend £90 million without any outgoings and still not be in danger of violating them. Newcastle do not have that because of the exorbitant sums of money they spent in their first couple of transfer windows under the Saudis. We do not have that excuse and could've easily closed the gap in valuation before Villa hijacked the deal.

As with any transfer, if the buying club has the appetite to match the selling clubs valuation then it can happen.

So I don't think we were prepared to pay the fee that Villa did - or indeed match Nice's valuation.

Not too dissimilar to the Guehi situation which is why I mentioned it. I believe that there was a similar gap between Newcastle's offer and Palace's valuation. And surely ' only ' £5m would not have tipped Newcastle over the PSR cliff ?

Trouble is Glasner insisted on early signings for the sake of a cohesive team by the time of game one.
Glasner was insisting on early signings so that they weren’t in the same position as at the start of last season with players returning from competitions tired and new players arriving late.
At the moment it looks like the team that started the Cup Final and the final league game against Liverpool will be the same as the team starting on Sunday. That’s why Glasner has sounded a little more relaxed in his more recent interviews.

In 2023, Ekitike was refusing to turn up to PSG training because we were interested and he was trying to force a move. We kept lowballing and he went to Frankfurt instead. We were also lowballing Bristol City for Semenyo and Brentford for Watkins. Obviously I did not mean that they were keen THIS transfer window.
I'm almost certain from memory that the reason Watkins didn't come to Palace is because he didn't want to.

TBF, Managers usually insist on something, what the chairmen seldom can‘t deliver for different reasons. Managers don‘t have the responsibility to look for the long-term financial healthiness of the club, especially those managers who probably are on their way to another club next summer and will have fond but distant memories of their former clubs. So asking SP to blindly do what Ollie is asking for seems a little bit exaggerated.

As I mentioned on another thread Palace are at the crossroads; after happily bobbing along season after season with an average 12th place league finish (and as Steve Parish stated in an enlightening interview retaining Premiership status is crucial to the plan), therefore actually winning something has heralded an expectation of greater things to come, just maybe. But will they? Has Parish laid the foundation for a steady push onwards and upwards or has the club reached its peak (for the time being) and lose its best players and best manager in a long while, those capable of making it happen?

Similar, somewhat pessimistic, article written by the highly respected Alyson Rudd in today's Times. She's focusing on Glasner's concerns about our slow business during the transfer window (again), and expressing the views of many on here that he will walk if we don't strengthen the team in the way he wants.

Sorry, but I can't get the full article to show as no subscription - I'm an old fashioned reader of the 'paper'. If anyone is an online subscriber and can upload the full piece, it's worth a read.

Normally I would take the Punch and Judy stuff between the owner and manager lightly if it wasn't for the fact that Glaner has been very quick to get on his toes throughout his career,he is more important than any three players put together.

Everything i've got two of are firmly crossed!

So what? We missed out, move on. This lowballing phrase you use, maybe that’s why we’re still in business and competing at the highest level, because we won’t throw money at greedy players, agents and other clubs.
We are what we are and it’s served us pretty well so far.
I expect the likes of Sheffield Wednesday and Morecombe and whatever other clubs in recent years with financial difficulties would love to be ‘stagnating’ where we are or even at their own level.

It is understandable that fans are getting excited after the F.A. Cup win.

We've signed some great players and of course many duds. I always have the feeling that if we really want a player, we go out and get them.

When we're being quoted as interested in players £25mil+, I'm always doubtful unless it looks a very genuine, targeted effort. There is so much journalistic nonsense and us nonchalantly spending tens of millions on several random players each window is far from realistic for me. Of course, of all the names banded about some will come good and as fans we will rue what could have been but many will also fail and at the end of it all, is it ever a case of 'the one who got away' or another punt that we were loosely associated with coming good when that was never guaranteed? I'd suggest the latter and never dwell on it too long.

But, come on, that was never going to happen, early buys are never value, that's why we wait, Glasner has 17 players that know his system inside out, he never had that at the beginning of last season, i think he expected 2 or 3 big players moving on, which hasn't happened, yet, if 2 or 3 come in, which i expect, this is a good window, nobody key will leave, if Guehi goes, which he should, he will also be replaced.
