CPFC v Millwall Match Thread

That kind of play needs stamping out. If we let it go without added punishment beyond a red card it will show our football hierarchy are dead in the water. All I can assume is that ref Oliver had the sun in his eyes. How could he possibly have missed that. 25 STITCHES ??? Come on.
We have done well to massively reduce over the ball challenges, but 6 foot high kung fu kicks that studs first hit a player square on the head causing 25 stitches .........NO..... absolutely no way.
Imagine if that had been a midfield player with that challenge. No difference, it was outside the penalty area. (no difference inside the penalty area) That goalkeeper must have a screw loose. There is no other explanation.
Delighted Mateta was released from hospital last night following extensive testing, but no player should have to end up in hospital from an aggressive challenge in the first place. We have to set a standard to stop this type of incident. A lengthy ban is needed.
I agree but perspective - this type of incident is very rare. Trained out of players by coaching teams seeking to avoid the costly loss of key costly playing staff for that match and subsequent ones.

Firstly Millwall fan. Very low bar.

Secondly he's right about the old days. I remember seeing a film of a keeper taking a cross. He caught it fairly but the striker- from a flying run up - charged directly at the keeper who careered into the goal still holding the ball. Not only was the player not booked, but the goal stood!
That was probably Nat Lofthouse in the 1958 Cup final when he charged Man U's Harry Gregg into the net. Coincidentally in the previous final Peter McParland of Aston Villa had smashed the Man U goalkeeper Ray Wood and broken his cheek bone. In those days before subs Wood came back on and tried to play as a winger. Kenneth Wolstenholme in commentary referred to "some rather silly booing" from the United fans.

This is not the first time in recent memory that our players have been assaulted with the referee unwilling to show the red card. In October 14 Julian Speroni was elbowed in the head by Craig Dawson at WBA putting him in hospital with concussion. The referee that day was Clattenburg who claimed he did not see the incident and therefore could not give a card.He then denied Zaha a penalty allowing WBA to come back from 0-2 down to draw 2-2.
In August 22 in his Etihad debut Haaland kicked Andersen studs showing in the head to stop him winning the ball. Extensive treatment was required to stop the bleeding while debutant referee Darren England bottled the decision to send the “golden boy” off or even give him a card. He then denied Ayew the opportunity to put Palace 3 goals up by blowing up too soon allowing Citee to come back to win 4-2 with a Haaland hat trick.

At least in this game Oliver came to the right decision albeit with the help of VAR. In the Haaland case VAR referee Simon Hooper and the television commentators remained completely silent allowing Haaland to get away with it. However when Wayne Hennessey of Wales went in high in the 2022 World Cup the commentators could not wait to demand his sending off.

The keeper lost Millwall the game. I have no idea what he was thinking but after the red card the game was effectively over.

The commentators said that Millwall made a good fight of it in the second half but I got the impression that Palace were playing at half pace just doing enough knowing that Millwall had to attack. I don't think we were in any real danger, shame but for that incident it would have been a good match up so the contest was ruined by one idiot.

Millwall fans change about Mateta were vile.
I couldn't make the game yesterday but a newspaper has intimated some of our fans for the same when their injured player went off?

The difference with that incident was that Dawson intentionally elbowed Speroni in the face; you see him draw his elbow back with the intention of attacking him. To this day I hate that man for his assault on our beautiful, innocent Speroni.

In contrast, I think the Millwall keeper just bottled it and didn't want to get smashed by JP. The fact he is their reserve keeper means any additional punishment won't mean anything anyway.

On a side note, did anyone see Esse go over the Palace fans at the end and kiss the badge? Haha. The lad is possibly a bit Zaha-esque in his emotions, but I thought that was funny.

From the goalkeeper's perspective, he was outside his area,he could not handle the ball, the ball bounced up and his instinct was to clear with his boot.
A ghastly injury ensued and I of course wish 'JP' all the very best with his recovery.

Well said. My sentiments exactly.

I don't think there was any malice in the challenge - I think it was a poor decision by an inexperienced 2nd choice goalkeeper. My problem here is that this shouldn't even be happening. NO player should think that a challenging for a ball with the foot that high is acceptable in any circumstances. For their keeper to think it is, shows a deeper problem. The comments by Alex Neil after the game are part of that problem. Completely irresponsible to attempt to justify his players actions by saying something like 'I thought he got the ball'.
There are reckless potential career ending challenges, and then there are reckless potential life ending challenges. This was the latter and has no place in (any) sport, regardless of how close they were to 'getting the ball'.

I'm undecided on the individuals punishment, however as I see no malice in it. A Red card and 3 game ban for the player? but doesn't seem enough especially for a 2nd choice keeper who only plays in cup games - which they have no more of this season. It'd more likely go for a BAN from football activities for a period of time.

There should though, be further sanctions/Punishments for the club, who have failed to instruct their player on what is and is not acceptable. With that in mind and coupled with Alex Neils comments AND the disgusting chant of the Millwall fans, I'd be looking at either a massive fine and/or banning Millwall from entering the FA Cup next year.

I was impressed with Nketiah, though we aren't set up for that type of striker.....he seems to require a stronger forward to play alongside....a 442 system player. Hopefully I'm wrong or that he can be effective as a Sarr type forward.

He did pretty well yesterday and it's notable that for a player who's not particularly tall he's scored two headers (different types of goals at that) which is an area where we've lacked a bit since Benteke's early time.

I agreed with the commentator. Eddie's header was a really great one from that distance the only way to beat the keeper was a looping header which he did to perfection. It was similar to his arsenal goal.

Long may it continue.

Delighted to learn this morning that JP has been discharged from hospital and will soon be back on the pitch. Fan-tas-tique!

It's very strange, and I've written this before, but when he first came to us I considered him a useless, gangling lump and even, dare I say, considered Eduoard to be a better player. But now, thanks to Ollie working with him and finding his best position, he has earned our love and respect for him as a key player. Some of you may have seen a full page in yesterday's Mail written by Sami Mokbel - a well written piece about our star man.

Anyway, good news about his recovery. BTW, I understand that, when he arrived at the hospital, his surgeon said 'allo, what's this 'ere'.

I like Nketiah's dimeanour, full of confidence and just getting on with it, out of the three we brought in the summer Sarr has been a great success, Eddie is getting there now, so we await the transformation from maggot to butterfly of one Daichi Kamada. Despite their vileness I thought Millwall did brilliantly to get back in the game and showed more goal threat in the second half with ten men than we did, up till the third goal, and their left winger is excellent. We battered them first half but were a bit of a blunt instrument attacking wise, a lot of balls lobbed into the box rather than something a bit more accurate, that was partly part of the plan no doubt but our final pass was consistently shocking second half. But maybe being too critical is unfair, the players may have been affected by JP going to hospital and we were leading all the way through. My 20/1 bet for us to win the cup is shaing up nicely.

But it isn't the old days, and I'm delighted we've cut out the Kevin Muscat kind of "football" in exchange for more protection which encourages skillful players not getting a career ending tackle. The price is some pansy diving and faked injury attempts.

Astonishingly my 80 year old dad also thought it wasn't a foul "because he got the ball first" and "you don't see them complaining in rugby" (I explained it would be a red in rugby too and even a charge on a player catching a ball is a sin bin offence). I told him if he prefers Souness breaking legs he can keep it.

It wasn't on purpose, but it was reckless and dangerous, and needs a further ban on top. (Their reserve keeper was pretty good)

It was kind of in sarcasm. The fella wasn't fouled, he hurt himself, sat down and rubbed his ankle.

Just been on a group holiday met a man who played Rugby at County level. His career was finished by Andy Ripley's very late challenge which broke his shoulder. Ironically he said Ripley went onto to win the fair play award for that season.

I don't wish to be pedantic but maggots turn into flies, not butterflies. 😁
