Composure

Andrew Johnson only scored a solitary goal in his first 11 games and that was against Plymouth in the League Cup. He then proceeded to score 10 in his next 5 games, including a hat-trick against Brighton.

I said 10 in 6 Willo, come on that’s not bad for me, I was nearly right 😀
I think I remember it including a brace as well when we went up to Ipswich

If you watch him going off when he was subbed, he was showing his anxiety. If he could place the ball instead of trying to break the net, he would get more goals. At least he is getting the chances. This surely can be trained into him.
I suspect he was just a little disappointed. Thats understandable.

He had a brilliant game, and knows how important a goal or 2 would have been to the team.

As others have said the most important thing is that he's getting in the right positions, not afraid to shoot etc.

Like everything at the minute with Palace, its fine tuning that needed. We're almost very good.

Sorry, but a brilliant game would have included sticking away at least one of those chances!

Eduoard has played in 5 Leicester games but has only started in 1, the League Cup tie at Walsall.
In his substitute appearances, he has not been called into action before the 72nd minute so his time on the field has been limited. He was not in the squad yesterday for the game at Ipswich.
The worrying thing is that he'll be coming back....

10 games played, 7 points on the board, 8 goals scored - and that's with a reasonably kind fixture list to date.
That's relegation form if repeated over the course of a season.
Chris Wood alone has scored as many goals this season as the rest of our team put together.

I think we will improve when players return from injury and the new players settle, but I could see this team achieving more draws than wins.
We seem to find it impossible to go two goals ahead in a game, which means you're always vulnerable to conceding an equaliser.
To climb the table we will need to put a run of wins together, which means we'll have to up our scoring rate of 8 goals from 10 games and demonstrate more composure in front of goal.

Yep..I’m sure both Nketiah and Sarr will come right and a Premiership goal will open the floodgates for more and more goals. There’s no doubt they have both been better in open play than in front of goal but that can change quickly. Relax, glance up and pick your spot more lads.

Good luck.

It's not only composure, it's also having the technical ability to chip it over an onrushing keeper, or take it round him, rather than blast it straight at him. It's something Glasner could work on in training.
Think Romario. Think Totti. Think Bergkamp.
Sorry but the things you mention just cannot be taught on the training ground. A World class player would not even think about it. Its a spontaneous response to the situation in the moment.
You could spend hours drilling a forward player to lift it over an onrushing keeper but in real time? In a proper match environment? When he has to think about it and has maybe a tenth of a second to react? He'll revert to his default reaction and put his laces through it. It might go in, it might not.

I agree with the opening poster that more composure would mean more goals. I also agree that confidence (or lack of) can erode that. Sadly when it comes this issue your players either have it or they dont. This is why Eze is so important to us. When his cofidence is high he does have it.

I think it was Robbie Fowler who said when he was young Liverpool's coach told him to aim for the goalkeeper when he had a chance. He asked why he'd want to do that and got told, "you're not that accurate son. Just use him as a marker. If you aim for him you're bound to miss and it'll have more chance of going in".
He turned out to be alright.

Actually that sort of makes sense, good advice, the only trouble is against Liverpool three times we were through on goal and hit it straight at the keeper, I called Eze all the pillocks under the sun for two of them 🤣 I can’t remember the other culprit

With Sarr and Nketiah I think we just have to accept they aren’t that good in front of goal. Their career records show neither has been prolific or is a good finisher. That’s not to say one of them might not hit a run of form. However, the sample size is big enough to conclude this is the players they are.

And just to add in the case of Sarr if he was a good finisher he wouldn’t be costing £13m. He’d be costing four times that given his other attributes like pace, strength, movement etc

I'm not worried about Sarr. He was never supposed to be the answer to the goal issue and his price reflected that. He offers the threat of direct running and contributes in other ways.

Just read a stat that Nketiah leads the Premier League this season for attempts on goal without scoring. He cost a lot of money, has never had a good goalscoring record and I'm concerned about him.

It was such a lot of money for us to spend on a player who doesn’t improve our starting eleven

Indeed. One has to ask what was the reasoning behind the signing of Nketiah? His stats are there for all to see - projecting forward from them, he will not convert the chances that come his way as we have seen thus far. I strongly doubt the club will recoup the outlay at some future date.

There are only two players in the world who could virtually guarantee finding the net to order, Messi and Maradona. They had it all. ( Although Maradona ball skills were untouchable).
Most modern successful goal scorers seem to sidefoot a lot of their goals these days. Like our Olise was and still is always doing. Both our new boys seem to be smashing it instead of placing it. Im sure it will come. Sarr is definitely getting in the positions he just needs to slow down his brain when he kicks it. He is so fast he could come very good yet. Nketia well he needs to do similar and try to shoot away from the keeper.
It is definitely do able. They both clearly really want it which is a huge step in the right direction.
