Composure

Ask Michael Olise,he had it.Sarr unfortunately does not.
If you watch him going off when he was subbed, he was showing his anxiety. If he could place the ball instead of trying to break the net, he would get more goals. At least he is getting the chances. This surely can be trained into him.

You saying that made me think of Fulham away last year 🫣but I know that was the exception to the rule

This is the thing, for all our missed chances, give me this any day of the week instead of all that sitting back no shots on target turgid stuff under Roy, at least we’re on the front foot and creating chances and although frustrating it’s costing us points, at least the games are entertaining and watchable

I think composure on a footie pitch is not being rushed in a given situation even if you've only got a split second.

On the mentality side I think it can be shaped a bit through practice and confidence (or lack of) can make a big difference, but i think its mainly a talent.

It's why we like Wharton so much (when he's not crocked - hope we only bring him back when he's 100%).

That’s why Ian Wright was so good, also Clinton, Dougie and AJ. watching some of the strikers we’ve had floundering in recent years costing us points makes me appreciate what we had back then even more, natural goalscorers with a bit of composure in front of goal are worth their weight in gold
I watched Ian Wright, when he first got into the team, for six months he couldnt hit a barn door. He was quick and shot at every opportunity, then suddenly he slowed down a bit and showed more composure and started scoring. It a confidence issue, when they haven't scored for a while they snatch at shots in hope, once they get one or two they grow in confidence, as Mateta did last season.

Vardy has 4 goals from 8 shots this season .
Very efficient, and doing what he has done for most of his career.
He’s 37 now so it makes you wonder what he’d be worth now if he was in his mid twenties.
I would argue that in may aspects of the game Haaland is limited - but of the current generation he’s unsurpassed at scoring goals which is why he’s valued so highly.

Somebody mentioned earlier how annoyed with himself that Sarr looked when he came off yesterday.
Contrast this with Glen Murray who used to miss chances, but it didn’t affect his game.
He had a strong mentality and even if he missed 3 chances he’d often still score a couple.

I never expected Sarr to score many for the club so it’s not a surprise.
He could score two in a game and then not score in the next 12 games.

Nketiah is expected to score goals but I think he only had a couple of chances yesterday, one which he shot at the keeper and the other which was taken off his head by Munoz who was in a worse position.
In the current system he seems to spend most of his time outside the penalty area so I don’t see him becoming prolific any time soon.

I think we all thought Wrighty was going to be too lightweight in those first few weeks, he looked like a puff of nothing.

AJ didn’t get off to a great start either, fast but useless was the general consensus, but then all of a sudden, I think he scored 10 goals in 6 games and the rest was history. Let’s prey that Sarr and Nketiah will still come good.

Definitely, Greavsey had to skip across ploughed fields to put the ball in the net as well.
Lineker was a master at putting himself in the right place as well, nothing spectacular with him, just putting the ball in the net when he got the chance
It used to be said that Greaves didn't so much shoot as pass the ball into the net.
Comparing players from different eras is pointless but we all do it , particularly with the great players, and although the game wasn't as fast in his day the offside law was more stringent, the pitches were often mudheaps and the tackling was miles more aggressive, let's be honest it was frequently brutal, particularly tackling from behind which is now outlawed.

His hat-trick against Poland in the '86 World Cup being the epitome of that quality.

After a shocking start to that World Cup, Lineker had us dancing round the living room in that game, the relief was memorable, back when I was bothered about England of course

Back when Wimbledon were tenants at Selhurst Park I went to see them play Spurs. It was a cracking game that Spurs won 5-3 with Lineker scoring a hat trick. Every goal was such a good finish. Made being a striker look so easy. His movement and composure was remarkable to see live.

What did Greavsey say about Ron Harris? “He was a gent, at least he used to put Iodine on his studs before he kicked me” 😀

He was pretty swift as well, I wonder what he would’ve gone for in his prime in today’s market?

Just watched the brief highlights of Spurs game v Villa and Solanke's opener has everything one would want regarding composure - put through one on one with the keeper he calmly dinks it over him with a deft chip, easy.

Bring back Sorloth .
23 goals last season and 4 already this season for Champions League side, Athletico Madrid.
Only joking (kind of)!

On a sadder note Zaha is not making any kind of impact at Lyon and is not even being used from the bench.

Andrew Johnson only scored a solitary goal in his first 11 games and that was against Plymouth in the League Cup. He then proceeded to score 10 in his next 5 games, including a hat-trick against Brighton.
