Brennan Johnson

Like Sarr, he's quick and he scores goals. On paper, he looks like a perfect match for our system. Whenever I've seen him he has looked a bit limited in other departments, and at £35 million is perhaps overpriced, but I can't think of anyone else who is available and who could slot straight in without a transition period. If we can sign him and a new right back early doors then that would be a huge lift.

Odd story.
We've agreed a fee , but the player hasn't decided despite the move being touted for weeks?
It's not exactly out of the blue.
Does he want to join or not, and how committed is he to playing for the club?
This smacks to me of him/his agent holding out for other offers if the story is true.

I don’t think it’s odd that he hasn’t come out and stated publicly what he intends to do.

The window hasn’t opened yet - and why should anyone expect the player to air his views before any deal is done.

I’m sure if he signs we’ll hear all about how he “jumped at the chance as soon as he knew Palace were interested”.

He’d be a good signing for us- no doubt.🤞

Clearly the rumours are true and the club is going all out to get additional quality in. Now down to the player and for him not to be swayed by other clubs in the meantime. I suspect he would prefer to keep options open as long as he can. Perhaps this is a loan to buy? All will be revealed. Hopefully we get the targets Glasner wants and we get the biggest signing of all in a manager signing a new deal!!!

Perhaps he has made his mind up, however as the protocol is that you have to approach the club first maybe all parties are going with the fiction that this is the first he's heard of it and needs a couple of days.

His dalliance also allows any other clubs to match our offer.

I'm not sure why but I feel uneasy with this deal.

Maybe it's because we don't have a great record with big money signings, or maybe because both Forest and Spurs were happy to let him go.

I hope I am wrong and Palace know what they are doing.

Forest got over 50 mill for him, they had no choice and Tottenham have spent big money on kudus and Simons, are they any better ? Not yet but when you spend that much you have no choice but to give them more time and I suppose Johnson would recoup some of the money they've spent.

On a side note, I remember being linked with his dad and thought he would have been a great signing at the time aswell.

For me, this is a "don't get your hopes up too high" kind of deal. If Semenyo goes, he is an obvious fit for Bournemouth and they will have lots of cash to splash - even if only to offer him better personal terms.

I don't blame him (and his agent) for waiting to see what other interest there is. When Pino comes good, he is going to look like a real bargain compared to the reported spend on Johnson. I guess this would push Esse even further away from the starting 11. Maybe the same for Nketiah whilst we still have JP?

He does seem "oven ready" and would certainly give us new options and more quality in the squad.

While I agree he’s a decent player and fair play to Parish for moving quickly, my worry would be will he sign given the uncertainty over Glasner’s commitment ? Frank has lost faith in him and he would not fancy having to deal with another manager in the summer who may not fancy him.
If Mateta doesn’t improve soon we may sell him to finance this.

I’m pretty sure that the story on the agreement on the fee hasn’t come from Palace who would want the first and only announcement to be when he’s signed on the dotted line and is pictured holding the shirt.
This would mean the story has emanated from either Spurs (perhaps hoping for higher offers) or from Johnson/ his representatives ( perhaps hoping for other clubs to make offers). The wording ‘ he has yet to decide’ sounds more likely to be agent speak.
There’s nothing illegal around any of this, but it’s clearly not in Palace’s interests if he’s a major target for the club and they want a deal concluded swiftly which has been intimated.

This represents a lot of money for someone who hasn't played a lot of recent regular football. I would rather we tried to get Oscar Bobb on loan and spent the money on trying to lure Gallagher back so we get more goal threat from midfield. However if Johnson is Glasners desire then so be it.

It's a concern but to be fair the same could apply to a lot of transfers when most manager's names are written on the door in chalk with a wet sponge nearby.

Especially if that manager in the summer is also Frank -

Be brilliant if we get it done. Can play across the front line, scores goals, is young enough to improve but old enough to be ready made to start.

The "up to the player to decide" worries me that it might fall apart. We need a signing ASAP. Nketiah starting is killing us.

Maybe I'm being idealistic but IF we can win Johnson's favour to play for Palace,I can see him as a player who could be brilliantly nurtured by Glasner whilst being guaranteed the minutes on the pitch given lack of forward depth in terms of clinical finish - Johnson has proven the latter before yet is seemingly out of favour with Thomas Frank and maybe for other reasons? Johnson's mindset will prove to be crucial in terms of the fresh opportunity that is being presented to him. Maybe I'm also admittedly assessing the situation through my trade as 'teacher'... 😉

Beeb reporting its a done deal

Please no he doesnt offer anything outside of back post tap ins. Theres a reason why tottenham are keen to get rid after his supposedly "amazing" season last year. His overall play is poor, his dribbling clunky. He cannot play with Ismaila Sarr due to his lack of technical ability. So I'm guessing he is competition to sarr. I'm really hoping we pivot away from this to Oscar Bobb. Eddie Nkhetiah 2.0
