Ben Doak

Unproven in the prem, well yeas, but standing out in the Championship at 19 and at international level is a pretty good sign he'll be able to make the step up.

Or course 'potential' is a selling tactic, but if you weren't paying a premium for potential all championship players would have a very low ceiling.

Bolasie was signed for peanuts, Olise had a clause, the other were all bought for more than our initial Doak offer.

No was I can see us going to 30m. But 20'ish with some add ons, sell ons might be closer to agreeable.

Not that this means anything but looking at Eze, Guehi and Wharton... all had a market value of approx half of what we ended up paying for them. So we paid for potential. Luckily for ud, in all those cases market value is now way above purchase price

He has had 0 time in the Prem and had what 20 games in Championship that is his career at league level.

Those names you mentioned at the bottom had a lot more experience around 2/3 years in Championship and was key players in the teams they came from.

Not worth over 20m it's typical British player over inflated price and coming from a big club who would rather let player rot then sell for good fair prices.

Unfortunately it’s the market. I agree we should have a firm ceiling but then we paid £25m (plus add ons) for Nketiah, a player who had shown he isn’t really very good at EPL level.

I like our recent approach of buying younger players. They won’t all work out by any means but we’ve done well so far. Eze looked quite expensive at £17m when we signed him. Looks like a huge bargain now. Same with Wharton and with Guehi.

Prior to being signed by us, Eze had played in over 100 Championship games, Wharton in around 45 games, Guehi around 50 games and Olise around 65 games.

I think he has a few caps for Scotland against good opposition.

I think it's where most of the mid to low Premiership clubs are. As we can't compete with the big boys you have to rely upon Freedman's judgement and our scouting system on players who can improve us that the big boys aren't after.

To be fair, our higher success doing this over most clubs is largely responsible for taking us from fighting Championship relegation to staying a long time in the Premiership.....without it we wouldn't be getting a bigger stadium nor have that top tier academy.

Just trying to work out where Franca Kamada and Nketiah fit into our idea of recent exceptional purchases. It seems to me we are on occasion happy to throw a load of money at players who don’t really add a lot.

Yes the winter window of Munoz and Wharton was fantastic however our hit rate on signings has probably been about 60%/40% overall in favour of decent signings over poor ones. As a club without pots of money we need to get that percentage up to about 90/10 as we can’t afford to squander our limited funds.

Hopefully we get it right in the next couple of weeks.

I take note of the observation and it's fair.

What I would say in mitigation is that Franca is still largely a mystery and we'll see what happens. Nketiah doesn't look bad but I agree it doesn't look much better than that....and I agree I think Kamada was expected by to do much better and hasn't.

I think our hit rate has suffered a dip certainly though we lost two major players and that's going to happen to a club that's still building in size like ours...As you imply big players want big time wages, and that requires the revenue to match and while our new stadium will give us a roughly 8 thousand increase it still puts us behind a club like Leeds on capacity size.

'Hopefully we get it right in the next couple of weeks.'
Fingers crossed Eagle.

Not incorrect, but still very hard to use experience as the only barometer

Non Palace fans thought it was mental when Wharton got an England cap after half a season in the prem. Ended that game with a 100% pass completion, and got a Euros spot.

To have any chance of signing these top talent we have to go early and take a bit of a risk. 20+ add ons wouldn't be completely out of kilter for a top Championship talent.
