Ben Chilwell

Chelsea FC want to offload Chilwell and several other first team players come the summer. We should bid for Chilwell as long as transfer fee and salary are not O.T.T

Chelsea always want to offload people but still wont shift on pricing so I wouldnt expect us to get him plus his wages are very high.

It's shocking how they are allowed to get away with having so many players on the books with a lot of them just rotting

In terms of our wage structure he's struggling to justify say £100k, well shy of his current deal. Add to that the silly transfer fee. I think he's 28? My best guess would be another season long loan. He'll have an eye on the World Cup and may step up.
Personally I'm easy either way, as long as its not a silly transfer deal. He seems decent without being spectacular.

How many players have we loaned from Chelsea over the years, got carried away thinking they love the club so much that they’d take a wage cut and sign permanently?
RLC, CG, NC… any more?

Do we really think Chilwell is going to do any different?
It made sense to sign him on loan as he fits the system better than Mitchell but he’ll go back in the summer.

I argued the same up the thread and have not changed my view... except.

The possible difference between Chilwell and the others you cite is age. They were much younger, needed blooding and were able to return, get a few Chelsea games and then a big fee to the Continent.

Chilwell is 28. Now at peak. Sell on value much diminished unless you sell now. But no takers.

There is a chance he will get good exposure in the next few moths (a Cup Final?) and then someone like Leipzig will make a decent pitch. However, if by window end he is still in the bargain bucket, we may get him on a good deal.

Perhaps I am just kidding myself.

Interesting point about players ages.

When considering us loaning him, I’m starting to think it may actually have something to do with Mitchell, who in December was being linked with a free transfer to Barca and Athletico -which is bonkers, but none the less will have caught the players attention and been affecting his decision making as to whether he resigns with us.
Loaning Chilwell for 6months takes Mitchell out of the team and therefore big clubs in Europe will probably forget about him.

As much as Mitchell isn’t everyone’s dream left wing back, he’s still mid 20s, he’s solid and over the past 3 or 4 seasons has probably racked up more minutes than 95% of players in the league. If we can convince him to stay then we’ll be able to invest more in other areas of the team.

Conversely as he is older he is probably more concerned about wages than developing and playing regularly. Taking at least a 50% pay cut is lot to ask of a player who is in his late 20s.

Then again everyone is wired differently and has different motivations.

And he can't have saved much on that pittance.

...linked by people who hadn't yet cottoned on that Mitchell's extended contract doesn't expire until June 2027

Who is NC? Do you mean TC? (Trevoh Chalobah)

His Chelsea contract goes on until he's 30 and a half......June 30, 2027.

He decided to extend his contract by an extra two years back in 2023 and the extra money was the obvious inducement. So this idea that he's going to willingly leave Chelsea to take a significant wage cut seems highly unlikely to me.

Why would he? It makes more sense for him to fight for a first team place or wait for one to open up at Chelsea by playing at reasonable ranking league clubs on loan like us. Next year he will be at another club.

Is it likely a big club want to pay for him with those wages?....it's unlikely, possible but unlikely....I think the only realistic chance Chelsea have of seeing the back of him is by agreeing to pay part of his wages. As it is he will probably see his contract out and then still has a good two or three years in the game.

Chelsea have taken this longer contract big wages route, which is a double edged sword and I think with Chilwell they appear to be on the wrong end of that sword.
