Arsenal vs. Crystal Palace League Cup match thread

Arsenal had far too much space to run through Palace's midfield that got wider the longer the match went on. Needs to be a lot tighter on Saturday with more challenges made earlier.
Also did others see the Arsenal player blocking Henderson from organising his defensivie wall at free kicks by standing between Hendo and the wall making communication more difficult. More dark arts crap from the Gooners!
Liked the way Glasner left 3 players upfront preventing the Arse from carrying out there set piece plays fully.
Also wouldn't want to be Trossard taking a corner on Saturday, he took enough stick last night at home. I bet he asks to be a substitute, slight thigh strain or foot injury me thinks!

Should have pushed on more in the first half. Mateta had Kiwior on toast and it was a shame that backheel to Sarr didn't get through
Eze has to get the ball higher up the pitch, He seems to dribble into trouble several times a game in his own half, albeit he often gets the foul. He's showing worrying signs of a latter-day Puncheon at five years younger
Kporha didn't seem to lack confidence but he lost his man a couple of times and spoilt one good run with a loss of control. Still, we were winning when he was hooked and he is still very young. Munoz was a big miss, as suspected

A mere stripling at 18 years of age, in his first start against formidable opposition.
He had to contend with Trossard who has over 180 PL games to his name and is a talented player who is fleet of foot.
The young chap defended a cross with aplomb, heading it behind for a corner.
All good experience for Kporha.

Interestingly, when we left 3 players up front, Arsenal countered this by only defending with 3 players. Normally a team will leave an extra man back in such circumstances IE 2 defenders against 1 attacker etc.
Perhaps Glasner believed Arsenal would deploy 4 defensively against our 3 attackers ?

Absolutely, I have always advocated the same myself. There are a few about, but it is Dougie’s conundrum not ours. I’d be more than happy to go and find them myself if they pay me his salary.
in terms of wing backs i definitely feel it is a position you can coach a good left/right sided midfielder to do over time.

The way AWB was converted to RB from a winger shows the defensive and positioning side can be 'learnt'.

The best example is perhaps our own Victor Moses at Chelsea. Who would have thought a pure winger like him could have made such an effective RBW.

I thought we looked reasonably comfortable in the first half. But Arsenals subs saw them move the ball around a lot quicker in the second half and we were overran. It’s disappointing to concede a hat trick to Jesus but his movement was good and defensively we were undone by that. Certainly the back three could have done better at times - perhaps a timely reminder that there is still room for improvement.

Positives ; we scored two goals and look more threatening going forward than earlier in the season, Eddies goal was really well taken and will hopefully boost his confidence

Negatives ; another anonymous display from Eze, the defence got pulled apart too easily in the second half

Overall - beaten by the better team but we made them work hard for it and they benefited from some poor officiating from the linesmen in particular

Our best back three when everybody is fit is Richards, Lacroix and Riad, Riad is as good if not better than Lacroix. get the money for Guehi and get 2 Wing backs and line up another CD for next year, as back up.
I could definitely live with that back 3. If Lerma stays he may well transition into that position as he gets older as well, which also allows Devenny to move into one of the main midfield slots.

If we are going to improve as a squad we have to release a top player every year and utilise the money properly. It makes sense that it’s Guehi this summer, although we have a lot of negotiating to do too on contracts elsewhere in the squad.

What does Doucoure need to do to get on the field?
Maybe he will start on Saturday instead of Lerma?
Eze maybe needs some timeout - he will be more effective against Southampton than he will be against Arsenal.
We didn't deserve to win and we were second to everything once we had gone 1-0 up.
such is life - this Saturday is more significant and I would settle for a draw right now.
Is Munoz still suspended?

Yes, I’m afraid so. Yellow accumulation in both cup and league meant a week off.

I agree about Doucoure unless he is still not 100%. We do need to stiffen that midfield up if we are to get anything out of Saturday.

What part of a goat?
We at Hrolf Castle liken him to a character from a Gerry Anderson Production.

Captain Scarlet seems applicable.

Neither did Arsenal based on the goals they scored fairly.
