Labour are quick to point out that Private schools lost their tax status because they only benefited a small group of society and not really fair on the rest of us. The same can be said for a lot of these charities.
Political / protest groups masquerading as charities.
Dodgy people setting up charities as tax shelters, loads of expenses very little in the way of spending.
All charities should publicly declare how much per pound goes to the good cause so the public can decide if they are getting value for money.
Why should religious groups get charitable status?
Offshore charities should not even be considered as the commission is unable to verify their work. I don't mean that a UK charity should not be allowed to do good work overseas but the charity must be UK based to qualify.
There was a businessman who setup a charity in Africa (managed and run from there) a village school. Actually it turned out to be his mansion with swimming pool etc.
