He went straight down the tunnel after being subbed. I thought I noticed Glasner being bemused at this. Was there some friction between the two? I maybe completely wrong. He did have a very poor game and deserved to be subbed so can’t think why he’d complain about this.

Glasner was correct to take him off. Only should have done so ten or fifteen minutes earlier. That bump on the head had Mitchell rattled. Chilwell looked sharp when he came on. But , alas.......

The fact he'd had a whack on the head I think him heading down the tunnel was probably more for that reason to get checked over rather than anything else.

He did have a poor game yesterday. Personally I think Mitchell has been lucky to play as many games as he has for us. He's had no competition for his place for the last 2-3 seasons which is quite ridiculous really.

Unfortunately in modern day football he just doesn't cut it from an offensive perspective. He lacks ability and confidence going forward and strikes me as the kind of lad who doesn't have a great deal of confidence anyway.

Chilwell showed enough yesterday to suggest he needs to start.

I just wonder if the arrival of Chillwell will have a negative effect on Mitchell. I do not see him as a particularly confident player and the incoming competition for his spot could ,rather than inspire him to do better, reduce his confidence. I guess time will tell.COYP.

Think that terrible throw for the goal may have got to him, the blow too the head didn’t help, but that throw was at the back of his mind, lost a little focus on the job in hand.

Noticed when Mateta scored, the team running back a couple of the players gave him big hugs of encouragement, he knew he’d seriously f**ked up. Pleased to see the fans clapped down the tunnel and didn’t give him abuse. I know he’s not good enough but he doesn’t need dogs abuse.

Came on here to say exactly this.
Four years or so he hasn't even needed to check the team sheet to know he's playing at now he's at panic stations and his heads not in the game because his spots there for the taking.

It a shame what happened to Mitchell. To be fair, Chilwell is a much better player. Admittedly, he hasn't played for a long time, prior to Doncaster, but yesterday as soon a she came on, he looked quality.

There is no time for sentiment. Chilwell should start ahead of Mitchell. It did look strange Mitchell leaving to go to the tunnel. May not be alot in it.

I don't think Chilwell has looked any better than Tyrick in the 2 games so far. He was lucky Everton scored their winner otherwise he would have probably have given away a penalty and got a red card.

Not convinced by that. His hand was down and the ball hit him more than anything. It's all academic now, but it will be interesting to see Chilwell's playing time ahead. I think Glasner is more the kind of manager that will stick with Mitchell, but sadly he gives the ball away too much and is not great offensively, unlike Munoz.

He hasn't played for a year and he certainly looked better yesterday than Mitchell did.

The handball may of ended up as a penalty but not really his fault as he actually had his back to the player heading the ball.
If it had of been given he wouldn't of even of got a yellow card let alone a red one.

TM had a poor game but I can't see the fuss about Chilwell, some say he isn't up to speed yet - well he may be by the time he is the loan period will be over, leaving the club where it was before, or maybe with the option to make an offer for Chilwell, or look elsewhere during the summer.
Obviously there should be competition for places but I don't see Chilwell as offering any solution to the left sided wing back / defender conundrum.

Have posted the same comment a million times and am bored of doing it but he's just not right for this system. In a flat back four he'd be brilliant. It's the exact issue we had with Van Aanholt, a natural wingback, but didn't suit the back four we had at the time.

I know we lost yesterday but I thought, even excluding the errors from Mitchell, the threat we posed once Chilwell and Eze were on that side versus Mitchell and Devenny in the first half was like night and day.

Personally I wouldn't mind trying Mitchell on the left of the back three given how good he is defensively, with him moving over to cover for Chilwell when he goes forward.

If Glasner is staying long term and we're keeping on with this system, it probably makes sense to cash in on him this summer (assuming he did sign the reported contract extension before) and buy a specialist in the position.

I agree.

Defensively Mitchell is as as good as most left backs in the Premier League ( aside from yesterday)!
But we mustn’t delude ourselves about his attacking prowess - and this is what Glasner’s system demands.

There were early signs of this as an issue.
I recall sitting behind Vieira screaming for Mitchell to push forward to be the recipient of Anderson’s excellent diagonal passes.
It just didn’t seem natural to him, and he’s not really progressed in this regard.
He is taking up more advanced positions , but looks very uncomfortable and looks much happier passing backwards when in advanced positions.
He doesn’t seem to have learnt the art of bending the ball around the opposing full back.
His crosses tend to be cut out or hit too deep.

Under Roy he was never required to cross the halfway line.
Now he’s required to spend a good part of his time as the spare man creating from out wide.

I’d fix it at a stroke by reverting to a back 4 with an extra man in midfield; but I know that ship has sailed.

Perhaps if Guehi gets injured, otherwise leave Guehi doing the fantastic job for us as left side back three until he goes.

Mitchell had a bad game. Gave away the goal and got caught out positionally in the second half. Struggled with crossing all evening. Didn’t think Munoz played well either though clearly without the individual error. Both our wingbacks have great energy but are technically poor at this level. Neither crosses well. At home where teams don’t leave space in behind neither is very effective to be honest.

Totally disagree with that.

Clearly it will take playing time for Chilwell to get match fit. The point of a loan to to temporarily fill a gap, provide competition, to increase the squad. If Chilwell is not better physically by the end of the loan period then we have failed. I agree with someone earlier talking about ‘night and day’ Even from the snap shot of yesterday Chilwell’s skill vision and awareness was clear to see. Btw, I’m not a secret Chelsea fan! Hopefully, Mitchell can learn from Chilwell and I understand that is part of the deal.

I was at the stadium and it did indeed feel like Chilwell was night and day better.

I know it isn't a long term solution for us but it highlights the ongoing issue with Mitchell.

The jury remains that he is good enough for us to really push on. I don't think he is. His ball control, lack of skill, lack of ability to take a man on, lack of ability to pass the ball forward just massively limits us. He has been with us for enough time to get better at these things yet he hasn't.

For me he is a squad player. He always gives his all and we have to respect that but it's clear that at the very least, he needs competition for his place.

Munoz is a much better player IMO, more rounded game, more overall ability and plays with verve.
