Mateta's contract.

According to some reports we've taken up the option to extend his contract by another year til 2027!!

Pleased with this as doubt we'd get anyone better.

After his end of season and summer exploits he now looks fit, happy and ready to contribute more to the team.

he is now developing the chemistry with Sarr that he had with Olise. To me the more pressing concern is that neither Eze or Eddie look comfortable making up the final piece of our attacking 3.

Watching Mateta in the Arsenal game it was noticeable just how strong he is on the ball, being able to fend off opposition players even when tightly marked. It would be a serious loss if he left at this stage.

I'm hoping Eze finds his touch again soon. He has gone through phases like this before, particularly when returning from injury. I would still play him when he is fit as he does have the potential to make something out of nothing, and, he is not going to find his form sitting on the bench. Also we don't have much in the way of alternatives.

We've taken up an option of a one year extension, which may well indicate that we have not been able to agree a longer term contract with him.

It smacks of protecting our investment rather than a long term commitment to the player.

Perhaps Mateta's demands on a longer term lucrative contract are deemed to be unreasonable by the club.
If he doesn't sign another contract I could see him being sold at the end of the season.

I believe Mateta is of the view that he's now ready to play for a bigger club that wins things or at least is a club that are regular competitors in Europe. Like you, I expect he'll be sold in the summer.

Sounds completely plausible. A year extension is not what you give you your top striker

I seen a stat where he had something like 30 goal contributions in his last 60 games? Or something very close to that?

1 goal involvement every 2 games on average is pretty good for a team like us.

Obviously he scored a lot towards the end of last season so that makes the stat look good.

Or on the other hand it could quite sensibly be reflecting that we don't know what division we will be in and with a transfer window coming up there's less chance of anyone sniffing around.

it's not a 1 year extension, it's taking up the option of the extra year in his original contract. So it will be based on the same terms and conditions when he originally signed 4 or so years ago.

Essentially it buys us time and was probably done prior to the transfer window to avoid unfounded rumours unsettling the player if he only had 18 months left.

I don't get why anyone would agree to a contract that allowed the other side to extend it's length without their specific agreement.

In this case the club is protecting it's asset but the rumours are that JPM wants out so how will he react?

Suppose that Kamada had the same clause and chose to extend it when the club was trying to get rid?

It just seems such an odd thing to include in a contract.

I think you have to remember that Mateta was sh1t until the end of last season - and that's putting it mildly. In that case, he was just lucky to get anything from a Premier League club.

I've more been wondering - how does someone improve that dramatically?
It's slightly concerning as if it were a lack of effort or desire - a la Edouard/ Benteke - then he could go back to what he was relatively easily. Which is even more concerning if he's not happy with his contract.
