I was reminded the other day of when Sanson left the club for Arsenal in a swap deal for Clive Allen......probably one of the worst decisions this club made.....and made by one of our most successful managers Coppell.

During his time at Palace, Allen made 25 league appearances and scored 9 goals (should have been 10), which wasn't bad at all but we were relegated and he was sold off to QPR for 700,000.

Disastrous transaction.

Sansom went on to gain another 77 England caps while playing another 8 years at Arsenal, one of England's most consistent and best players.

For our best transaction.....thankfully there have been many in recent years.....but I'm all typed out.

I’ll start with getting Andy Johnson from Birmingham.

It wasn't Coppell, must have been Venebles I presume.

Worst…Paying 2.7 million for Valerian Ismael, which was a massive amount of money back then must be up there as worst, he got outclassed, out fought and out jumped by Carl Leaburn who was the biggest donkey centre forward around at the time, which said it all

Best…..getting Ian Wright on a free transfer!! But then Sir Steve and Uncle Ron picked up a lot of bargains, Andy Gray, Brighty, Tony Finnigan, GT, Neil Redfearn, John Pemberton to name a few

Is this post inspired by the current click bait cobblers about a swap deal with Man City involving Wharton?

Not a purchase but to be fair one administration saw the rise of to be fair Clinton Morrison from the youth set up which to be fair may not have occurred but for...

To be fair now a BBC regular and a better one but to be fair he does have an annoying habit of overusing the phrase...

And owning all those stores as well. He's done well for himself to be fair.

Akinbyi.

Saw him score ONE. Took off shirt in wild celebration and was stacked like a rugby player. Yet somehow out muscled by EVERY defender in the division.

In fairness to the club.

Samson was in deep financial trouble and owed a fortunate to the bookies, he may even have owned a bookies at that time or else his dad did. Anyway we had no choice he needed money fast and Arsenal wanted him. For some reason QPR would not sell Clive Allen directly to us hence the deal.

It must have been a crushing blow to Allen's ego to sign for Arsenal and then be shown the door a few weeks later.

No....and it sounds suspect to me....why would they swap Wharton for someone good.

No, it was just an idle thought......Bad decisions and good decisions that hurt us.

Ismael was right up there as terrible business.....strange really, afterwards he seemed to do ok....went on to play for Bayern Munich.....maybe he was a sensitive soul when he came to us.

Wright was that rare diamond in the rough.

We should have sorted it.

Allen was a very good striker.....strange how he never quite gets remembered as such.

Maybe not the best of the best but in 2007/8 we signed Shaun Derry, Clint Hill and Paddy McCarthy for a combined £150,000 which in current financial terms is like getting them out of a Jamboree bag.
I was thinking Damien Delaney was probably on a free. Then you would also have Scott Dann and our very own Ward. They were peanuts too. We've almost done better with players we pay little for than players we pay big for.

We should stop buying/loaning from Arsenal - David Price, Julian Gray, Tommy Black, Sanogo, Jenkinson, Holding and Nketiah (…so far!).

To compound the issue Arsenal have had Wright and Mcgoldrick from our most successful team.
