Palace v Liverpool match thread

I did pal! I saw the reaction first hand and remember it well!

I’m originally from the Midlands and have a lot of friends who are Forest Fans (including my best mate) and they were at that match at Hillsborough for the Semi-Final. Some of them went on the pitch as it unfolded to help. All of them saw things that day that they are still massively scarred by.

They saw Liverpool supporters being absolute scum! Pissed up, fighting with the police, who were trying to help and others stealing watches, jewellery and money from unconscious people being treated on the pitch. They stated this to me that very evening when they returned from the game - before any of the media reports filtered through in the following day(s). They were disgusted, traumatised and still hate Liverpool supporters today because of it.

The issues that day were caused by Liverpool supporters (many of whom were drunk) forcing their way into the stadium without tickets! They are renowned for this and always have been!

I’m a retired police officer having served 35 years with the Met Police. I have worked hundreds of games at London grounds during that time, numerous ones involving Liverpool and Everton. I’ve also worked loads of their Wembley games during that time and for 20 odd years of my service I worked them as an FIO (Football Intelligence Officer).

EVERY Wembley game involving either Liverpool or Everton we would have hundreds & hundreds of ejections because of unauthorised entry. Forgeries, duplicate tickets, photocopies, bunking in, forcing open the barriers, bribing stewards & gate staff and mates getting in and opening up fire exits or gates from inside to let their mates in. Any other Wembley game involving ANY other team and we’d have on average 30-50 ejections. Put Liverpool or Everton there and we’d have 400 plus!!!

I also worked a particular match at Chelsea and was situated at the Bovril Gate and witnessed first hand, pissed up, ticketless Liverpool supporters trying to force their way into the Bovril Gate en masse, we’re talking hundreds trying to push through police lines and then those that did get through rushed the turnstiles and gates and forced their way into the ground, this was many years AFTER Hillsborough. It was known beforehand that they were going to do this as we had source intel from within the fanbase attending the game that this was being planned. Liverpool of ALL teams planning to do this!

I have also witnessed first hand this same behaviour at West Ham (Upton Park) and with Everton supporters at Fulham. I’ve only ever seen this large scale, ticketless, forced entry on that scale (with English domestic clubs) with Liverpool or Everton supporters.

I could go on listing several more shocking personal experiences with the supporters of these two teams but a lot of it is just repetition of the same theme; Drunk, ticketless, abusive, violent, indecent and intent on getting in the ground AT ANY COST.

We also had a number of Palace supporters scammed by supposed Liverpool fans with Club Wembley FA Cup Semi Final & Final tickets.

I was 19 at the time of Hillsborough - a complete football fanatic, attending Palace matches every weekend home & away. I was also an adult, working full time as a police officer, having joined the Met and moved down to London at age 18.

I obviously don’t know but you may have only been 11 at the time of Hillsborough??? (Judging by your registered members name on here?). Possibly attending school or maybe stealing hub caps? Either way, if I’m correct about your age & circumstances then there’s absolutely no question who has the clearer ‘experience’ of the day or of the ‘national reaction’ as you put it, or of what happened in the aftermath of the reporting!

EVERYONE bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know what happened that day and why.

Everyone bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know that it was the Liverpool supporters who were responsible for the Hesysel Stadium tragedy and deaths in 1985.

Everyone bar the ‘never their fault’ brigade know why it was only the Liverpool ‘fans’ that had issues on the concourse and at the turnstiles of the Stade de France (Champions League Final 2022) when the thousands upon thousands of Real Madrid supporters had NO issues whatsoever 🙄

Let me be clear, I have the utmost sympathy and compassion for the Liverpool supporters who died that day at Hillsborough and with the families who lost loved ones.

They were the innocent victims who had match tickets and who were in the ground early and at the front of the terracing.
They were tragically crushed to death by their own supporters who forced their way in and onto a massively overcrowded Leppings Lane terrace!

I cannot overstate my utter disgust at what I’ve witnessed from Liverpool supporters during my 55 years and from what I have seen reported and heard from others.

My absolute and total contempt and dislike for their fan base as a whole, is as a result of this…and their ‘unfortunate’ habit of always being involved in these events.

Their pathetic and repugnant treatment of our Country’s National Anthem today has just served to affirm everything I’ve ever thought about them.
The official enquiry doesn't agree with you ,even the Sun newspaper acknowledged they made stories up ,why are you still repeating the lies ?.
You sound very bitter and angry at an entire city .
The booing of the national anthem is an anti English thing ,they feel more Irish.
Started with the potato famine ,many came from Ireland to Liverpool.
The Thatcher years ,managed decline of the city .
Hillsborough cover up .
It's an anti establishment feeling .
Yes Heysel was on a section of Liverpool fans ,the 70 / 80 s were the bad old days for many clubs .
We probably had a firm aswell .

Exactly! If I remember correctly, it was the third time he had given away a penalty with that silly voodoo dance. Ollie noted that they had provided Hendo with a study of Liverpool's penalty takers before the game. How on earth can Eze believe that a professional club like Liverpool don't do the same? He should take a look at Devenny. This youngster volunteered to take the last pen and converted it in front of 90K at Wembley like at the training ground. But okay, rant over, everything turned out fine in the end so it was just a lesson for Eze.
If it was a lesson for Eze he doesn't seem to be learning to quick. It's time for the manager to step in and discreetly suggest an alternate method or just stop Eze from taking them. I knew he was going to miss, I have no faith in his ability to convert whilst he employs that start/stop run up.

Agreed, I just don't get it. He made a total tit of himself away at Newcastle which changed the game, that should have shocked him enough. The whole stop/start dross just puts on additional pressure and rarely seems to work. Kane and Shearer would just smash it on target and could be forgiven if the keeper saved it.

On a separate note, I don't condone our booing of Jota, all pretty shameful and not a good look on our club. I wasn't able to make the game but I understand from mates who were there that the booing of the national anthem riled a few Palace fans which probably caused the reaction. I think we all know that the Hillsborough disaster was poorly policed, but let's be honest, there were thousands of ticketless fans forcing their way in which Liverpool fans conveniently forget.

That Liverpool wally on the thread earlier playing the usual victim card doesn't endear other fans. Have been to Liverpool many times and it's a fantastic city. Their fans have a history of poor behaviour which has lead to tragedy. Reminds me of my 'knuckle magnet' mate who seems to get in a scrap every time he's pissed but he's never the cause.

What an absolute gent Arne Slot is.
Praised us, said the booing was probably just a mistake.
A real breath of fresh air after that serial whiner Pep. So bored with his Mourinho type acerbic interviews. Arteta is another bore.
Perhaps the northern Europeans are just less emotional than the Spanish, Portuguese etc?
Thomas Frank and of course our own Ollie are 2 more examples of managers who always give a fair and decent interview.
Well played Arne!

“I’m a retired police officer”. Yes we know all about the lies your colleagues told to try to cover up their own incompetence at Hillsborogh. Looks liked you cut and pasted your posted from one of those police reports. Or from a copy of the S*n!

Thanks Phil’s barber. You clearly don’t understand the boos because you didn’t experience the national reaction to Hillsborough and the lies that were perpetuated by the government for 30 years before they admitted it was slander. As Londoners you have no idea what it’s like to live 200 miles away and be as irrelevant and distegarded as the city of Liverpool is. I’ve lived in both cities, I’ve seen it from both sides.

Anyway. Palace is a top club with top fans but Phil’s barber is a f***ing prick. Educate yourself you prick
In the 80s the Thatcher government appointed Michael Heseltine to work on the regeneration of Liverpool. So successful was he that he was awarded Freedom of the City by the Labour-run council.

God you've swallowed the big lie. Don't you find it odd that there's not one single shred of blame towards the thousands of ticketless fans? And Heysel, they blamed Juve. Sad it all happened, but their behaviour is central to it.

I guess being in France puts you out of touch.

He needs to treat it like one of his fizzing belters from the edge of the box

That's good to hear, could you imagine Klopp?

Without the science of physics to back me up, it seems fairly obvious that additional power comes from the forward movement of a run up. Imagine a long jumper or pole vaulter stopping just before take off ha ha ha! Equally inexplicable is the fact that Eze has a normal run up when taking a 30 yard free kick, quite often with positive results, so why the stop/start for penalties?

I find it hard to believe Eze scores regularly in practice against Hendo if he does that ridiculous run up. Surely he’ll change it now after 2 glaring misses on TV. Every keeper in the country will know not to dive until he hits the ball. The silly jogging on the spot looks awful and adds nothing and the final step and pause means he has much less power and less chance of disguising the direction.

The “ticketless fans” lie has been thoroughly debunked by a public enquiry and a few excellent documentaries. These use witness accounts to explain what happened. Liverpool fans were expected to enter the ground from the end with a limited number of turnstiles which meant that a large number were still trying to get in at kick off. The FA officials refused to delay the start and instead the police ordered the gates to be opened. Liverpool fans were then channeled through a tunnel onto an already packed stand. Fans were climbing fences to the pitch to try to escape the deadly crush. Police officers eventually realised what was happening and started taking the fences down but too late for many who were laid on the pitch with their mates and family trying to revive them. Lives could have been saved if the police had allowed ambulances waiting outside the ground onto the pitch but they refused until much later when many had passed away. The police then made up lies like “hundreds of ticketless fans” and “fans robbing the dead” to divert from their own criminal negligence. But yes keep repeating the lies if it makes you feel justified in your hate.

On the way back to the airport now. I'm glad I chose this game over the Forrest game in two weeks.

Just what an amazing day. I really enjoyed it. Can't believe I have watching us win two trophies in the space of a few months.

Agree with Eze everyone around me and me knew he was going to miss. You can't generate power with that technique and goalkeepers know the players that do it and wait them out.

Same, any player that does a any sort of stutter run up is looking for the keeper to make a move. It can work, of course, but you look a tit if it doesn't.

Surely as a keeper, the strategy is to just wait and no flinch. Knowing that because of the indecision and lack up run up, the resulting shot isn't going to be powerful or well placed.

Actually in this case it almost worked! Allison came of his line before the kick.

Unfortunately it doesn’t work against teams like Liverpool because the ref ignored it just like the obvious handball penalty.
