That they have lied to by the traffickers about the opportunities that await them is certainly true but not that they can just do nothing and live on benefits. It’s us who don’t allow them to work and then support them whilst we process applications.

Have you seen the effect the new tax rises are having. So on that what work would they do ?

The deal, at great cost to us, was to return failed asylum seekers/ criminals. Unfortunately it doesn’t stop them coming back over the Channel. Many of the smugglers will be Albanian.

Once they have arrived and been processed ( ie fingerprinted). That’s when HRA might kick in. A lot of smugglers most definitely are Albanian, unfortunately they don’t have public offices advertising their product so finding and identifying them is all but impossible, as they tend to move around.

Dont forget free medical/dental care, accommodation , once allowed to stay their families then join them so more free medical care then add on education. Then any wage they get ( albeit low) would be far more than they would probably earn in their own country. Well worth the i itial outlay

Correct. I have said this before just use any benefits calculator on the internet. You will have to make assumptions but I think they are reasonable. if you disagree use your own assumptions but let us know.

1 adult works full time but minimum wage
Live in Rented property in the London area. Average rent in London is 26k but let's be generous and say 20k.

The wage earner will pay around 3k-5k in income tax and national insurance. Plus you have to include another 3k for council tax (they may get a discount).

Working Tax Credit
Rent support
Child Benefit
Others?

Last time is did this about 5 years ago the taxpayer received about 5k in return for about 30k in benefits and that did not include cost of NHS / education etc.

Listening to the description of what is happening in the camp in Calais on Radio 4 this morning I am not sure anything would be an effective deterrent. It seems the groups within the camps are at war with one another and are taking over the boats with guns and knives. This is why France is passing a new law to enable them to intervene within 300 metres of the shore, something they cannot currently do.

I thought the costs involved put huge burdens on their relatives that in turn they had to remit back to them. If it was just the better life for them I can see that being enough motivation but surely they are told they will earn much more.

we know there is lots of immigration into Western Europe, where the benefits regime is generous. One question Wisbech............is there much immigration into countries with a miserly benefits regime ? eg Romania, Hungary, Malta ?
