Main Stand redevelopment thread

It's only 20,000 odd though isn't it? Less than Selhurst by a few thousand. If it was 40,000, fair enough. I expect you're not quite serious but I did think about it - not for long.
We all have to live with small disappointments. I expect we might manage to live with matches at The New Den with many fewer away supporters.

Playing at another ground is not a good option.

If they close the Main Stand, it will reduce capacity to about 20k. Not great, but better than playing away from home.

Has a spade been put into the ground yet? We were promised...
Activity has been going on for a while. I doubt they would spend all this money and time on preparatory work and then not bother to build the stand.

I have a dream where we are bought by super rich owners who leave Steve in charge and then buy off the council to let us build a 50k stadium in Palace Park or some other suitable site within 5 years... But that is just a beautiful dream, and will probably stay that way.

Meanwhile, we will have to make do with a new stand in our current dilapidated ground, when it finally gets built.

May 2025 update

Crystal Palace rethinking expansion plans

Although plans to expand the Main Stand at Selhurst Park are still very much on schedule, the club have reportedly been left surprised by how costly the entire project is going to be.

As a result, the powers that be are now reportedly weighing up a shift in how they are going to go about the Main Stand expansion. The original plan was to build the new stand over the top of the existing one, allowing the club to continue operating at full capacity for the vast majority of the build.

However, that plan is now reportedly on the verge of being scrapped due to the £200m cost. At that price, it will take Crystal Palace around ten years for them to break even on the project, which could cause issues with financial fair play.

The new idea is a more conventional one – demolish the current Main Stand and rebuild from there. While this will see a temporary reduction in the capacity at Selhurst Park, the construction costs will be significantly less.

Perhaps the Eagles' 2025 FA Cup triumph and subsequent Europa League qualification will help ease some of that financial burden.

Regardless of the construction methods they go for, Palace need to make a decision quickly as construction is set to begin in the coming months.

The cost ballooned while Palace were haggling for ages with Sainsbury's over the "slither" of land in the car park. It might have been better to pay what they wanted and start construction at the £70-£100 million that was first quoted. Any savings made are probably gone.

I dont believe that article. I dont know who wrote it but it has to be speculation. The entire plan is built around the club keeping the main stand open and building over it. Are they honestly expecting us all to believe that Parish has suddenly just said 'ooh thats too expensive, scrap it and start again!'
That's probably another couple of million on architects plans, designs, drawings, we'd have to resubmit new planning permission, the builders would want to retender based upon massive changes to the internal structure. The list just goes on and on. And that would probably take another 4 or 5 years to get approved!

Its not just as simple as 'changing the way its built' This is rubbish

If you had read it you would know who wrote it the person name is on it.

You don't just have one plan you will be presented with multi ones.

Yes it can be as simple as switching how you do things you really need to go and speak to people in that industry.

The issues causing the delay in the ground improvements arent just about money, the local area is so heavily built up there is no available land. The CP park will never likely happen as the Mayor has just signed off on a £150m improvement. Palace could have got together on a joint ownership and saved a shed load of money. Its a big shame and a missed opportunity for all.

I'm a tad confused, as I haven't really been following it, but wasn't we promised that the re-developed stand would be ready for this season's kick off.

Is that in doubt now?

In my experience, money fixes most problems. South London is congested but with enough will and money I'm sure something could happen. I'll probably be dead before it ever happens.

In the short term, we need improved facilities where we are.

At my advanced age, one does not buy green bananas and one is never confident that ones buttocks will make contact with a new seat when not a brick has been laid in the development of the new structure.

We waited 100+ years for a major trophy, the wait for a new main stand is also running at 100+ years.
The spades in the ground this summer are only for the purpose of relaying the pitch, it also needed extending to comply with UEfA regs for our European tour.
