Defence secretary John Healey has told the BBC the UK will pay its "fair share" but wants a say in decisions.

Why should we pay. The EU is desperate for the UK military to be involved in their plans as most of the countries don't or wont fund their own.

Why on earth then would we agree to pay to join their defence programme.

C'mon Starmer tell them if they want British troops and technology this is our price.

We don't actually know why he resigned? Ill health perhaps? I agree that 7 days after being elected is odd timing, did he know something before he was elected, or is it just bad luck that something has happened in his personal life in the last few days.

Some MPs have stood for election knowing that they were very ill and would be unable to carry out their duties. Oddly they aren't criticised and get plenty of sympathy.

If he has a good reason for stepping down, and this reason only came to light post his election victory, then I say respect the man. No doubt it will leak out.

I think you have a point really.....forty years ago we were a serious military force in the world but ever since defence review after defence review, Tory or Labour have reduced our military down to essentially a reaction force and nothing that could actually fight a war lasting more than a few weeks.

Having said that what we do have is an economy, that while it's no great shakes is in European terms in the top three in Europe.

That's why they want us.
