Crystal Palace vs. Ipswich match thread

Ipswich received great support from their fans and it will be a shame to see them go down however they had no real stand out players on the day and as has so often been the case for them this season - they played ok and competed well in a tight game but still lost. Phillips signing for Man City has made him very rich but ruined him on the pitch.
That's what I mainly took from the game! They were terrific in their support and not as nasty as many other away fans. Annoyed the hell out of me!

A large amount of them singing the ‘Qua sera/Mateta in A&E’ song at Norwood Junction before the game yesterday!!

You know, I'm beginning to think we won't go down this season.

Rubbish game and we could have lost it so did well to smash and grab. I quite like Ipswich though and hope they somehow stay up.

We are currently only eight points behind City in fourth place and four points behind Bournemouth in eighth.

While I'm not suggesting we'll finish fourth, I do think the top eight is becoming very realistic given our form. Look at the screenshot below of the last ten games across the big five leagues in Europe, this form is outrageous.

Southampton up next as well which is also very winnable. What a time to be alive!
Imagine if we can keep this team together and get a proper pre season in.

A few observations;

I thought the referee had a poor game and as has already been mentioned, failed to blow for at least two very obvious fouls on our players that then led to good chances for Ipswich. He booked Greaves in the first half but failed to produce a second yellow in the second half for another bad foul and you could tell that he was taking into account it was Greaves and that any other Ipswich player would’ve been shown the card.

Nketiah looks to be the type of player that needs 5 chances to score one and I think we’ve massively overpaid for him, although thankfully not quite at the level of Sheffield Utd with Rhian Brewster. However it is still early days and I’m hoping he shows an upturn in form like with JPM.

We missed Hughesy and this impacted us more so with Lerma having an off day.

Richards looks to be making the right side of the back three his own and Henderson was superb in goal (my MOTM). Eze was sadly quite poor and ineffective again. A bit of a concern that in a home game against a bottom three side we aren’t giving Esse & Franca more than a combined total of 3 minutes on the pitch! Is OG really seeing so little on the training ground from those two that he feels they have nothing to offer?

Sarr played well and his goal was superbly taken.

I was thinking this exact thing yesterday. What a shame as there was a player in there before he went to city. Same now happening to Grelish.

I would say Guehi is the only one out of the 4 would be going. Why would we want to sell Wharton, I can’t see him going even if a mega offer comes in. Current estimated value 70 million, could go north of 100 million in another year and I’m sure he is currently on a 5 year contract!
I hope you are right but there is no smoke without fire, money talks and press rumours have some source. Clearly several of the wealthy top clubs in the EPL need a reset going forward and clearly they will splash the cash to buy success!

We got away with one as Ipswich didn’t make the most of our inept performance.
Summed up with a line I heard walking up the hill from two town fans. And it went,
“we won’t ever play a shitter palace than that “
Sort of felt good knowing other fans actually rate us 😀

I heard some chap utter the words "This is what you get when both Hughes and Mateta are missing".

Furthermore, Oliver Glasner was not enamoured about the pre-season games in the USA but a decision had been taken for commercial reasons.
My wife and I attended a U.S. preseason match with Wolves about 400 miles from our home, and from a commercial standpoint the event must have been a disaster for Palace. The ticket prices were exorbitant, and attendance was miserable. Fewer than 5000 people showed up – in a 34,000 seat stadium. Of those, I'd estimate Palace attracted no more than 2000. Whether we should blame the marketing efforts or the ticket prices is irrelevant, as the match (and the exceedingly modest local coverage) did nothing to raise Palace's profile.

Incidentally, my wife and I didn't make the 400-mile trip only to see the match. We were returning from a long vacation loop, and conveniently stopped in Baltimore (Annapolis, actually) on the final night of our journey. At least Palace won, 3-1.

I assume, OG would certainly prefer an altitude training camp in the Alps and the opportunity to eat Wiener Schnitzel and Kasnockn for a week or two would certainly not be his most important motivation (at most a pleasant side effect).
The athletic effect of training at higher altitudes should not be underestimated in terms of endurance and fitness. Any amateur athlete who does his laps at home after a two-week holiday in the mountains can confirm this. In Austria, a whole branch of tourism has developed that specialises in football clubs from abroad who come to Austria to train in the summer.

Apparently the thinking is now it’s best to train at close to sea level but to sleep and rest at altitude. These advances in training must be why so many sports see people being able to run further, faster and recover quicker. I mean it must be honest training rather than anything else right? 🤨

We used to enjoy mountaineering and had a small hiking group with friends decades ago. I was usually one of the less fit ones, most of the others did more sports and had more stamina. However, I can remember that I once spent two weeks in Saas Fee with my wife for mountaineering, where the valley resort is already near 2000 metres above sea level. From there we went hiking in the surrounding mountains. Shortly after my return, I went hiking again with our group of friends in the mountains around Vienna. The summit of the tour wasn't even 2000 metres above sea level. I remember that those who were usually the ‘draught horses’ asked me why I was walking so fast this time and whether I didn't want to take more breaks. Needles to tell that some time later everything was back to normal and I was among the tail-enders. Of course, these are just my layman experiences long ago, not sure how to train optimally as a top competitive athlete nowadays. But there must be some reason, why many top clups (a lot from the German Bundesliga) opt to train in the alps during the summer.

I think Pulis had the squad doing pre season altitude training in the Alps

In about a month I am off to Peru will spend two weeks often around 12-15000 feet. There is a mountain hike to Rainbow mountain (google the pics amazing) that is at around 17000 feet which is close to Everest base camp height.

I'll let you know how I get on with the altitude .
