Brighton - Tactics required

They always cause us problems at set pieces so let's see how we handle Dunk. If we put a small blocker like Wharton on him it almost certainly won't work.

Tracking the runners is vital - players like Hinshelwood are very forward thinking - when he scored that header a couple of seasons ago he walked (and it was a walk) about 30 yards into our area without anyone even attempting to go with him (think the culprit was Jeff Schlupp).

Seeing how easily and unchallenged Munoz was last weekend whenever he went forward does not bold well.

Having said that we were compact against Leeds so a similar set up might work
Dunk will be the least of our problems (if he plays). That Vuscovic that they mugged Spuds for is looking like a class player. However, Dunk really hates us and so they might play him just to add a bit of spite...

This sounds obvious and the reality will be much more complex, but an awful lot of The Scum's goals this year look to come from wide areas. Take their European match in the week for example: first three goals were directly targeting the opposition right back. The fourth was a cross from the left to the back post from open play.

We simply must cut off the supply of crosses from open play and deal with the first and second balls when the crosses do come in.

Finally, on transition the back 3/5 need to drop as a unit rather than one of the centre halves being pulled out of position up the pitch (Richards has been caught this way several times this year) without the wing back on the other side tucking in.

I think if we can get these things right we'll be in with a chance. We've shown we can do it at Leeds. We need another Leeds performance where this time we take our chances.

This all seems very sound and logical.

I daresay we'll do none of this and be 2-0 down before I even open the app, but if not then I will know Sage read your ideas.

He / the lads got it right at Leeds. We also won the second half 1-2 in Lyon.

I find it frustrating we are not putting many performances in for a full 90 minutes but I remain optimistic Sage will get it right. Let's hope that starts this weekend.

We don't play football at the right tempo for most of the game and then put on the "B team" for the last 15 minutes. I really do hope Sage gets it right on Sunday but we can't keep depending on "luck" to get us across the line. No disrespect to Adam but we need a leader on the pitch ... and we need a striker!

Adam as captain has probably come a little early for him, he is no doubt learning on the job, if the club persevere with him I think it will (in time) prove to be a good move & no doubt the experience will have been good for him to have had the extra responsibility, with Deano on his way back into the team it will be interesting to see how Sage handles that choice

I think we need to set up as per the Leeds game. We will still create chances without being wide open and carved apart every time the poor go forward. My team would be, assuming they are fit.

Hendo
Khalaili
Mitchell
Richards
Tomiyasu (Canvot)
Chilwell ( Mingueza, Honest)
Wharton
Timber
Kamada
Sarr
JSL

The team is quite hard to pick but I feel we need our most experienced players playing in defence. The midfield of three picks itself.

At the front, Sarr has to start even though he looked rusty on Thursday and well JSL looks like a donkey as a hold up player but if we can get some crosses in, he may light up.

If we can survive the first 15 minutes then I'll have belief

I think the key to this is that somehow we prevent them from dictating the game, especially in the first 30 minutes. Easier said than done I know. The model must be our performance at Leeds. OK we didn't score but we managed the game perfectly and that's what we need to do tomorrow. Worth noting that Leeds are one of only two teams to whom they have dropped points (they drew 1-1) or, indeed, conceded a goal. They were home and we got our result away.
No prediction from me just trusting we'll do all we can...

You mean get stuck in!! the modern day term I believe is to ‘press’ them 🤣 it is frustrating when we sit back and let them pass it around comfortably while we stand there and watch. We’ve done it at selhurst a couple of games or more in recent times against them giving dunk so much time on the ball he comes to a stand still with the ball at his feet and we’re all screaming in frustration while he stands there with that smug look on his ugly mug, fcuking kick the Cnut 🤣

As much as I'd like us to play as we did at Leeds, I'm beginning to question whether that particular performance was designed that way, or if it just happened.

If defending well in an organised shape was simply a tactical option, then surely Sage would have used it at Lyon?

I wondered if we defended better at Leeds because Tomiyasu played centrally rather than Disasi or Richards, but he came off at half time so that doesn't really explain it.

Perhaps it's that Leeds play much the same shape as us and we cancelled each other out? Perhaps they just didn't attack very well that particular day?

If we defend properly at Brighton then perhaps it is something Sage can do when he thinks it's for the best, but if not then the Leeds game will seem more and more like an anomaly.

I think Lerma will be back after he was rested against Lyon. I don’t know if Tomiyasu and Chilwell are available but we could do with some experience in the squad. Benitez has done well but having Henderson back would give a real boost to everyone.

We have scored 17 goals in our last 7 matches and Brighton will be wary of being caught out if we get the opportunity to attack! I’d take a draw which incidentally was the score the last time Rob Jones refereed the Brighton v Palace match.
Lerma wasn't rested. He's not in the European squad.

They probably think they are on a good run of form we are playing shite and it's all set up for a 1-0 palace win.

That forum, so so riddled with pop ups FORCING you to watch in order to access. It's such a shithole.

Unfortunately for me they moved this game to televise it which means that I can't watch it because I'll be boarding a plane for a week in the sun tomorrow instead.

Meanwhile the weeds are getting carried away online, I have literally seen a few of their Facebook groups talking about winning the league 🤣 🤣 🤣
