Crystal Palace welcome Bristol City for a friendly

I went just after Christmas 2010 I think it was and Neil Danns scored what we thought was a superb winner, but the buggers equalised

I saw us win 4-1 there in the league cup in about 2013, or did we lose 4-1? I can't even remember lol

Remember the goal that Freddie Sears scored against them. He hit it so hard that it hit the advertising hoarding behind the goal, bounced out, and the ref said it hadn't gone in (pretty similar to the Clive Allen one against Cov)
Thanks for that. I spoke to Mick Coop about the Clive Allen free kick a few seasons later. The ball flew between his head and the post. He said in his long career as a professional, he never saw a ball hit harder.

Those days you take enough beer to keep for after the match , Friends I sat with we played cards going up there and back for money , used to lose going but win coming back . Happy memories 😍
Cards was the thing then wasn’t it, before everyone had their phones to stare at gormlessly 🤣

Lost !

It was a turning point - from AI ;

    • The Match: Crystal Palace suffered a brutal 4-1 loss at Ashton Gate at the start of the 2012/13 Championship season, leaving them in the relegation zone with zero points from their opening games.
    • The Fallout: In the aftermath of the embarrassing defeat, Freedman held a meeting with the Bristol City boss to thrash out a deal for winger Yannick Bolasie.
    • The Transfer: The loss prompted Steve Parish to immediately sanction an extra £500,000 in the transfer market, allowing Palace to finalize the signings of both Bolasie and unattached playmaker André Moritz.
    • The Legacy: These signings completely transformed Palace's season, sparking an incredible run that ultimately led to their historic promotion to the Premier League via the Play-Off final at Wembley later that season

Back to the "match". I sincerely hope that the next team playing in red shirts and white shorts that visits Selhurst doesn't walk away with the same result. Unfortunately it wouldn't surprise me :-(

Im confident, back with a bang! We know how Ollie will line up, we were unbelievable against Leeds....a bit of that and I can see a comfortable 2-0 win...Munoz to give away a pen...laaaavly

I was disappointed with the result. It was a decent, but not the best, team that went 2-0 down. Bristol City are a typical mid table Championship side and with players looking to impress we should have done better. The Leeds game was a massive improvement and this just feels like a step back, despite the missing players. Winning is a mentality. We need that at the moment.
I can see I am out of line with most views on the game so hopefully I'm wrong.

I went to the game mainly because it gave my son an opportunity to see if my 4 year old grandson could sit through a whole game ( he did ! ).

A poor result obviously. But what was more disappointing was the performance. Given the supposed improvement in the strength and depth of the squad, my expectation was that whichever team selected would have been capable and at ease with Sage’s tactics. Mostly though they resembled a random bunch of players that barely knew each other.

Wharton had a good old fashioned ‘ stinker ‘ - nothing came off for him. Guessand offers so little I can’t believe he’s commanded £20m + fees , Nketiah rarely affects the game….that trio were the worst performers on the day imo.

Ultimately I’m struggling to think of any positives to take from the game.

Did your son enjoy it , if yes job done , over the years watched alot of friendlies , they are what they are friendlies .
first time I watched Zaha was against Chelmsford wasn't over impressed with him .
Wharton said after the Leeds game they are starting to understand what Sage is doing and wanting , so if the player's can see it then friendly loses mean nothing

No it was the League cup after promotion to the PL. That fullback who we signed and released immediately played.

Ah, 2-1, 2013, Florian Marange

It was all about my grandson and whether he could last 90 minutes !

I too have watched plenty of friendlies down the years. As I said, result was unimportant it's more to do with performance. A part of which is at least looking familiar with what the manager wants. And I didn't think they did.

Big punch up in the park outside the ground after the Coventry game.A policeman skidded on his motorbike and fell off trying to intervene and everyone stopped fighting to take a look!
I was there. There was a Palace fan called Manners who had a walking stick with him (he didn't need it) , and he'd been trying to break it all day on the way up there. When it kicked off he whacked some bloke with it and it snapped in half.

Everyone who went was so pissed off they thought let’s have a fight. I think the Coventry fans were surprised by us that day.
The result was so undeserved and we know the disaster that followed that game….
