Sage is sage

Just had a read of the pre Borough match interview, about rotation of players. I have got to say “ he knows his own mind and tells it like it is” he is nothing like Frank de Boer!

Sage is going to fit in just fine, from the touch line he might not be too animated, but I saw a video of him giving it to the players when he was a manager in France, Edouard was there in the dressing room and he wasn’t pulling his punches!
 
Think he's great. Reminds me of Glasner at the start when he came in with a real winner mentality. It's clear he's going to play attacking, risky football so he needs to sort out the defence or there's going to be a lot of high scoring games and the odd drubbing. I hope he's not another Pardew and finds a balance, if he does could be a lot of fun.

Whatever anyone says about Pardew, no one can say it was boring when he was in charge

Definitely wasn't boring. I think he thrived at first because when he came in he inherited defensive solidarity and added attacking flair to it. Unfortunately as time passed the defence gradually fell away and every game was chaos.

Sage hopefully a more advanced version of that who can manage both sides.

I think ‘chaos’ is definitely the correct word to describe that away game against Swansea 🤣

It was madness and Saturday reminded me a little bit of that.

It's not Sage's fault though at the moment. Apparently we have conceded 2 or more goals in our last 9 PL games going back to last season.

We can't outscore teams like that every week so definitely need to get a grip on it!

Yes it's certainly not sustainable. Our disjointed press is a big cause of this. Once Fulham beat the first man in the press on Saturday they literally had so much space to play into to build their attacks.

I've no doubt that as the press becomes more organised it'll get better...but I do have my doubts if it'll improve to a level where we don't give up a few huge chances each game. Which once teams work this out it could be a very risky strategy! But hopefully Sage will tweak it.

Annoyingly I think Glasner will very much improve playing against us if we continue like that.

Against Fulham we played with two deeper lying midfielders in Timber and Wharton (I loathe the term "sixes" - isn't a #6 a centre back or am I showing my age?)

Sage commented after the win that in the first half especially they didn't prove to be too effective. I think the context he had was ineffective with the ball.

But it looks that way to me without the ball as well - we are getting bypassed too easily in open play. The back three are exposed both centrally and out wide (eg Fulham's second goal when Richards got rolled in the build up. It is easy to point the finger at him but why was he so far out of position? Seems to me he got pulled out of position because wingback and the deeper lying central midfielders had been bypassed or were themselves out of position).
 
It seems that Sage likes playing a very aggressive high press with the two wing backs bombing forward. The midfield and defence will really need to stiffen up for this system to work. For the first goal Mitchell had barely made it back to the halfway line by the time they scored. The second goal Richards had to head far out on the right wing as Khalaili was nowhere to be seen. Richards is not the most nimble in that position and was very easily skinned. And for our third goal, both of our wingbacks were the furthest forward.

Not a fair comparison... We have just signed 11 new players. Come the end of January last season we could barely field 11 players.

As much as a w@nker he is for going to Forest, he was a miracle worker for us, and his tantrums were arguably justified given the scenario he was in.

So far, I like Sage. Following the Fulham win, I suddenly feel very optimistic for season - even more so if we can get Sarr & JPM firing.

But, those 11 players were funded in part by selling Eze and Guehi. Both of which he kicked up an almighty fuss about.

If he wasn't such a diva, he could have stuck around to reap the benefits of the model.
 
We've won one match not that convincingly so far. I don't think we can quite rely on Sageball yet. But it is more promising with three points than none. Lose to Ipswich though, and normal service will be resumed. Win and our hopes will be up rather more.

Let's hope Doucoure comes roaring back, Sarr & JPM hit top level and the new signings settle in quickly. Then we'll be in pretty good shape. Either that or Sarr and Wharton leave in January, Sage gets the bullet and we're all queuing for a rubber room.
