Sage is sage

Mateta missed an open goal from 8 yards!
Of the many issues yesterday JSL’s hold up play wasn’t one of the ones that cost us. Actually he held it up ok first half but there wasn’t anyone close to him.

All the goals came from giving it away and being exposed and an inability to do defensive basics at set plays. Is JSL great? No. Was he even one of the top ten reasons we were humiliated yesterday? No

It's not a matter of JSL or Mateta, to focus on the attributes of either / or misses the point completely.
The essential point being the inability to perform one of the fundamentals of the game, namely to defend, and as a side line to that, controlling the midfield to assist in defensive duties. Sage's formation and choice of player means we will be up against it in every game we play. He can do something about the formation, but doesn't have much of an alternative with the choice of players. And therein lies the dilemma that any manager will have with this particular group - frankly a system needs to be found quickly that suits their limited ability and functions as a team effort, even if it means going back to basics.

Have tried to work out our best formation from current squad . Best I could come up with is 4321 and still not sold on it .
Henderson.
Chilwell. Richards .Tomiyasu. Mitchell
Hughes . Wharton. Doucoure.
Kamada. Sarr . Mateta.

Issue is 2 have injury issues , one recovering and cheik coming back from long term .
Wouldn't even know how to work 442 . Im looking at stopping the goals going in , with some threat of attack .

Any ideas people what sage should play and team .

This of course is right. Thai squad is clearly deficient in a number of areas, not least leadership and physicality. I would contend though it is no worse than the ones Pullis or Big Sam took on. What they did was put in place a system based on basics, hard work and simplicity. They also identified players with the right attitude to get things done even if they weren’t especially technically gifted.

Before anyone jumps in I am not advocating bringing Pullis or Sam back but I am saying when you have a squad that is lacking then doing the basics well is what matters. You don’t have to be Messi to run, hard, close down and be compact to play against

Yes indeed and it looks like things have gone full circle whereby we will need a manager who can identify the basics and implement them, and also evaluate if any of these saps is up for the challenge.

I am reminded of a message I received from a learned gentleman some way back who opined that Sage will have departed before December to be replaced by Sean Dyche.

Where’s Pino? Can’t leave him out surely?

Nothing against your choices, but when one looks at this selection it makes one realise how very poor we are - sick notes, want aways, past its, ironically all on big money for doing very little.

A dilema indeed. What to do with the players at his disposal for which he is not totally blameless bearing in mind he was brought in quite early by our standards. Looking at the number of potentially viable defensive/midfiled players that obviously didn't want to come in the summer including a couple who previously played under him, which probably should have rang some aarm bells. Identify players with the right attitude? Well I would have hoped that all players had the right attitude but I know what you mean, those that put everything on the line whether losing or winning by 3, like the Brighton players did yesterday. I also am of the opinion that our players are technically gifted, which leads us back to attitude. Basics. Watching yesterdays spectacle on Sky all of us said at different times that going forward we looked quite good but a) we have failed to score in 3 out of 4 away matches and b) welcome back JP normal service resumed. The issue at the monet is that we probaly need to score a minimum of 2 per match to have a chance. Not sustainable. Leadership might help but who for heavens sake. B***** Brighton have Dunk and Gross to sort out anything on the pitch. We have, er, hmm, answers on a postcard.
