Axel Disasi

The rumour is that a loan for Disasi has been agreed, without an obligation to buy.
It’s now up to Disasi to see if he wants to join.
The benefit is that such a loan would give the club breathing space to see if Tomiyasu can stay fit and also take the pressure off Canvot and Riad and give them time to continue their development.
He’s a physically imposing and strong defender who can help us compete aerially in both boxes.
He’s generally solid while prone to the odd mistake.
It’s not ideal, but a needs must solution.
Not very inspiring TBH - that said West Ham fans really rate him and were desperate for West Han to buy him.

Just hopes this means we’ll go and get Le Guen now and CDM - please Kees Smit (Keith Smith)..!!

Did a quick search and , yep , he’s not fast .

Interesting thing though , Canvot , Richards and Riad are all around the 35-36 speed which is where Max sits . I saw Canvot do a couple of impressive run backs to intercept last season , so maybe he’s being earmarked for that role .

Can’t remember who it was against but he played one game on the right and it was the not his best ….so whenever I see people proposing teams selections putting him on the right , I think , “ they didn’t watch that game .”

Arsenal Away - Carabao Cup Q/F last season?

Martinelli ripped him apart and he was replaced on the right by Clyne at half-time.
Mind you that was as right full back in a 5, not the right sided central defender in a 3, so maybe you’re thinking of a different game.

If it does happen then the outlay is reduced and I wonder if we do try to bring in Le Guen as well and then phase him in over the season like we did with Canvot last season.

Having started last season with Guehi and Lacroix in our back line with both now departed I do view our current back line as considerably weaker. The back unit featuring a few new faces is going to need some serious coaching because if we start leaking goals then it'll be tough for Sage.

I'd love this.

Loaning always feels a little dirty. But if its to give time for a young lad to acclimatise it feels very sensible.

If we did bring in Le Guen, surely it would be best to loan him back to Brest for the first half of the season (or all of it).

We need some EPL experience at centre back. The back line was a weak point last season especially from set pieces and in the air. Playing both Canvot and Riad regularly feels like a big risk. Both have potential but are error prone and Riad looked off the pace when he played last year.

To put it in context as it stands we are looking at Richards being our only centre back with regular EPL playing time and experience over the last two years. Keep in mind he was very much the third of three at the back when we started last season and wasn’t even a first team starter for the first half of the season before. Thats not to say he is a bad player but we badly need to bolster that area

This loan makes sense. For once, not having a buy option seems like the right one, as this does feel like a temporary fix. It is also the option which seemed the most likely that Palace would make as soon as Lacroix left. As others have said, it gives Riad and Canvot time to develop, and brings some more experience to the backline and a physical presence. Another big plus he is probably ready to come straight into the first team and won't need the time to adjust that a foreign player might.

I take a pragmatic view.
Would he strenghten our current options at centre back?
Undoubtedly.
Apparently Chelsea would prefer to sell, but we only want a loan which makes sense looking at his age, fee and potential sell on value .
Disasi wouldn't be my first choice, but perhaps he's our best current option and he does offer strength, experience and aerial prowess - all of which we lack.

Agree, we need a CB to play in the middle of the 3 and i'd be uncomfortable if that was Richards.

I don't think Disasi is any slower than Richards and hopefully is a bit better with his distribution.

Of the defenders we have Canvot looks the fastest over say 10 to 20m, and Richards often struggles over that distance.

Also from a heading perspective we need a unit. Both Canvot and Riad aren't the tallest and heading is average at best. I can see us being bullied at set pieces, and let's face it we weren't great at defending them when we had Max.

Disasi gives us flexibility now and potentially we have 2 players to play in each of the 3 CB positions.

At 28 i'm glad we don't have an obligation to buy - just hope the loan fee wasn't silly. I think his wages are c £80k a week which is high , but affordable.

I suspect he will be on the bench at best this Saturday so let's see how we get on without him. Everton will definitely try to bully our back 3

Riad was getting over a bad injury last season and wasn't really in any sort of match fitness shape until the very end when he was excellent covering for the injured Richards . He was also decent in helping Morocco reach the KO phase of the World cup where he was trusted to play in the middle of a three .
I have no worries about his ability and think he will be a regular starter in the coming season

I wonder what we managed to negotiate off his £5M loan fee?

The no option to buy doesn’t bother me either. Both parties know the position and the will we / won’t we stuff with Guessand & Uche was an unwelcome distraction.

If he’s brilliant and we want him after the loan period, then I’m sure a deal can be struck. If not then it’s no biggie. The £28M option on Guessand was hardly enticing after all.

Improves our centre back options for the time being. I just hope there is no recall clause this time and it does kick the can down the road.

I think though we will have more back-up in central defence, the starting three will still look significantly weaker than it did last year, and that probably goes for the team as a whole.

Maybe and let’s hope so. The point I was making is him and Canvot are still unknown quantities in the EPL. That is unfortunately just the way it is. They could be great and Cavnot showed impressive development. Equally though we could learn Riad isn’t up to it and I certainly don’t want to be relying on an untested defence

Agree.

IMO the reason the club havent been willing to spend silly money on a Lacroix replacement is because they are confident in Riad and Canvot's ability. As you said Riad was excellent with Marocco and with us at the end of the season.

Remember Lacroix looked awful for his first 5 or so games and then settled and performed consistently.

Agree.
Riad looks to be a good footballer with a decent left foot and an accurate pass.
In international football he has time on the ball and is not put under the sustained physical pressure that is encountered in the Premier League.

He does not dominate in the air and does not have a burst of recovery pace.
He can certainly improve as he gains experience e.g in positioning , but with his injury record too, I would not like to rely on him as an established member of the defence from the start of the season.
